[nysbirds-l] Wood Stork - 7:35am update - Yes

2021-05-07 Thread Long Island Birding
Bird is still feeding across the canal on Baycrest Ave, Westhampton. There
is a pull out at the end of the road to park in. Then walk up and look
across, feeding with egrets and glossy ibis at a distance. It sometimes
goes behind the phragmites, so might need some patience. Seems content for
now. Good luck!

[nysbirds-l] South Shore Long Island - Offshore (Coimbra Wreck Area) Report - 8/21

2019-08-22 Thread Long Island Birding .
Went offshore yesterday, had high numbers of Wilson's Storm Petrels with
some larger flocks. A conservative total count would be in the 200s. Birds
were concentrated in areas of bait fish slicks. Also had a single Jaeger
Sp. in the distance cruise by a dragger. Noticeably absent were shearwaters
in the area, with only a few Cory's seen. The weather might of had
something to do with it, as things got nautical with storms and swells
passing through. I am thinking the shearwaters went further offshore to
avoid the storm system, although I did notice two shearwater sp. about 2
miles from the beach coming in, but definitely not big numbers. Some small
striped dolphin pods and humpbacks were also in the area of the Coimbra.
Tuna were breaking the surface, seemingly made up of mostly false albacore
and smaller blue-fin.

[nysbirds-l] Pelagic South Shore Report

2019-06-24 Thread Long Island Birding .
I was offshore Sunday and Monday doing some incidental birding and had good
numbers of shearwaters. In the area of the Bacardi Wreck on Sunday there
were huge rafts of Great Shearwaters on the water and many flying about.
Conservatively I would estimate there were close to 1000+ birds in the
area. There were also some Cory's mixed in. Interestingly enough I saw
hardly any storm petrels or much other life.

On Monday in the area of the Coimbra Wreck I had at least half a dozen
Leach's Storm Petrels before/as the sun was rising. There were huge numbers
of Wilson's Storm Petrels (conservatively 100+), Great Shearwaters (nowhere
near the number by the Bacardi though), and some Cory's Shearwaters mixed
in. Other marine life included dozens of pilot whales, hundreds of porpoise
in the area, a few sea turtles, ocean sunfish, and of course Bluefin Tuna!

[nysbirds-l] OCWA and Pine Siskins @ Lido Beach Town Park

Those at Point Lookout Town Park might be interested in this

I found an orange-crowned warbler earlier this morning in the area that the
scissor-tailed flycatcher was seen in.
I was also alerted to a group of about 25 pine siskins seen by other
birders near the memorial at the park. They were pretty cooperative.

Re: [nysbirds-l] Roseate Tern Banding and Aging Follow Up

2018-06-26 Thread Long Island Birding
Thanks for the update Steve, of note a few days ago I observed two of the
roseates at Nickerson displaying courtship behavior. I tried to get it on
video, but they stopped before I could start filming. Maybe some are
breeding? Or practice? Also of note, some birders observed last year there
was a roseate that bred with a common tern but the nest was unsuccessful.
Thoughts anyone?

Re: [nysbirds-l] Nickerson Beach - Possible Common Tern (longipennis) Species - Comments and thoughts welcome

2018-06-07 Thread Long Island Birding
Hello Shai and everyone,
Thanks so much for your detailed response Shai. I changed the listing to
Common Tern and added one more picture with more of a side view, but
unfortunately I wasn't able to get a flight shot or any shots with the
wings spread open. I am curious if this bird will reach more of the
classic breeding plumage that I am used to seeing or remain dark and how
that might affect its ability to breed this year. I do also think the legs
are a bit darker than the pictures let on. There was another interesting
bird yesterday that was speculated to be an adult common tern showing
retarded plumage, however it looked quite different than the one in my
report and resembled more of a second summer tern. Thank you again for
shedding some light on this Shai!

[nysbirds-l] Nickerson Beach - Possible Common Tern (longipennis) Species - Comments and thoughts welcome

2018-06-07 Thread Long Island Birding
Hello all,
On 5/22 at Nickerson Beach I observed a Common Tern that stood out from the
rest. It was the same size/shape as the other common terns, but the bill
and legs were much darker.
I showed the bird to a friend who is an eBird reviewer and he suggested
that it was a Common Tern (longipennis). He also mentioned that this
particular subspecies has been previously reported on Long Island.
Looking up those reports, I found there were two entries with photos by Jay
McGowan and Michael McBrien on eBird, described by both as exceedingly
rare. Here are the checklists:
https://ebird.org/view/checklist/S14608476
https://ebird.org/view/checklist/S30291552

After seeing this I was surprised, because I have seen birds that looked
like this before (even one yesterday). In the past I have heard them
referred to as portlandica type birds, but it is my understanding that
portlandica refers to first summer tern plumage, which this bird clearly
was not (I would say it was also clearly not second summer tern plumage
either.). My report was not accepted to eBird as of yet, so it is not
in eBird output, but here is the bird I saw (Pictures in the linked eBird
checklist and short video in youtube):
https://ebird.org/view/checklist/S46147297
https://youtu.be/qGdfoevCKxU

Anyway I would like to hear any thoughts or comments. Thanks,
Mike Z.

Re:[nysbirds-l] [ebirdsnyc] Roseate Terns and Gull-billed Terns, Nickerson Beach

2018-06-06 Thread Long Island Birding
To add to the report, this evening there were at least 5 roseate terns,
some showing a very nice rosey hue on the breast, and at least one of them
had bling. A single gull-billed tern made an appearance and there were
multiple first year common terns.

Spent a short time at HLSP this afternoon, there were at least 15

Re: [nysbirds-l] Red crossbils Edgewood yes

2017-03-25 Thread Long Island Birding
For anyone interested I was able to take a shot of an interesting behavior
Eric Miller pointed out while observing the Red Crossbills. The seemed to
be picking at the bark (for what I am not sure) of a deciduous tree, we
even observed the male feed the female red crossbill.

[nysbirds-l] Please Read: Jones Beach Median in Danger due to Bike Path extension

2016-10-01 Thread Long Island Birding
Hello everyone, I want to make the birding community aware that there are
plans to extend the bike path towards the West End 2 parking lot at Jones
Beach. This is going to include building a path on the lawn on the bay
side. This is a huge problem for all of us who love walking Jones Beach.
The plan was already deemed to have no significant adverse environmental
impact by NYS OPRHP, however I beg to differ. It may perhaps prevent
access as well.

Please Read the Plan:

To update, thanks for those of you emailed me about the situation at Breezy.
I have learned that the Breezy Point Coop won a court battle over 50 years
ago, and is under the impression that they are one of the few places in the
US where land is owned to the "low tide line" (not the high tide line).
>From what I have read, this is because the decision in the case stated the
Coop owns new land that was created by the construction of a jetty. This
was supposed to mean new beach that was created, however the Coop has
interpreted the ruling to also include land that is under water. It seems
like a complicated situation there, and although you might be able to win
in court because of the Public Trust Doctrine and likely incorrect
interpretation of the ruling, it wouldn't be worth the hassle. If you
really wanted to be a jerk though, you could always walk in the water past
the low tide line!
