[nysbirds-l] North Shore Audubon Society Bird Banding Presentation and Meeting, 5/28

2024-05-23 Thread NSAudubon Publicity
Join the North Shore Audubon Society for our Annual Members' Meeting on
Tuesday, May 28th at the Manhasset Public Library at 7:00pm. The short
business meeting (including election of officers) will be immediately
followed at 7:15pm by an engaging presentation on bird banding by *Harvey
Farber*. *The presentation will NOT be available via zoom*; however,
members that are unable to attend in person will be able to vote via zoom.
In Person: Manhasset Public Library, 30 Onderdonk Ave, Manhasset, NY 11030
Via Zoom (members meeting only) use the following link at 7pm on 5/28:
https://bit.ly/49Zi7NG

Attendees will gain a firsthand perspective on the captivating world of
bird banding from Harvey who will share his unique insights and experiences
in the field at Tobay Beach, Teddy Roosevelt Sanctuary and Green Tree
private estate. He will explain the art of identifying, male or female
birds hatching year birds (HY), and after hatching year birds (AHY) as well
the art of separating very close species.

As a seasoned birder with over 50 years of experience, *Harvey Farber *was
born in Stockport, England, and that is where he first discovered his love
for birding as a young child. To improve his bird identification skills, he
bought a small bird book and a pair of binoculars, which he still has today
along with the life list of the early birds he identified. In 1957, Harvey
and his family moved to the United States, but his passion for birding
continued. In the early 1960s, he had an exciting encounter at Tobay Beach,
Long Island. There he observed a few individuals, including Bob Paxton,
Tony Lauro and Tom Davis, banding birds. This experience left a lasting
impression on him, inspiring him to assist them every weekend in May,
September, and October during bird migration. After about three years,
Harvey obtained his own Federal permit, allowing him to participate in bird
banding.

Australia is a continent of vast avian diversity. From beautiful beaches to
incredible desert expanses to dense jungle habitat to sprawling urban

[nysbirds-l] "Birds of Panama and Trinidad" TONIGHT @ 7pm

2023-11-28 Thread NSAudubon Publicity
This evening the North Shore Audubon Society (NSAS) will present *Birds of
Panama and Trinidad. *This will be a hybrid live/Zoom meeting.

When: Tuesday, November 28th at 7pm
Where: Manhasset Public Library, 30 Onderdonk Ave, Manhasset, NY 11030
 Or register via Zoom: https://bit.ly/3QsLEYg

The program will feature many of the birds and habitats that NSAS member
Ashley Pichon encountered while traveling through both countries. Join us
and get acquainted with some of the remarkable avian species we rarely get
to see.

*Ashley Pichon* officially started birding in March of 2022, with the North
Shore Audubon Society. She bought her camera around the same time and began
learning bird photography alongside traditional birding. Both quickly
became an obsession. Ashley spent her first year in the field being
mentored by members of the NSAS, without whom she says she’d know
“nothing.” Her first birding trip was through the various bird habitats of
the island of Trinidad with a group of birders and bird photographers. When
she returned, she was fully hooked and soon ventured to Anton Valley,
Panama.

All are invited - you do not need to be a NSAS member to attend.

[nysbirds-l] Tune in this evening: Parrot & Parakeet Conservation in New Zealand - Zoom Presentation

2023-02-28 Thread NSAudubon Publicity
The North Shore Audubon Society will present *Parrot and Parakeet
Conservation: Adventures on New Zealand's South Island *via Zoom tonight
(February 28) at 7pm.

Zoom registration link: http://bit.ly/3lrHsvP

Parrots and parakeets once were very abundant on New Zealand’s islands, so
much so that one observer said that parrots were so numerous that they
could be shaken from a tree like apples. Following the colonization of New
Zealand by Polynesians, and then by Europeans, all bird species’ numbers
declined, including the curious and brightly-colored Psittacids: the
parrots and parakeets. In response to the wholesale decline of native bird
species, New Zealand has led the charge in conservation efforts aimed at
returning natural taonga (treasures) back to the land. Join Dr. Doug
Robinson to learn about the current efforts to return New Zealand’s parrots
and parakeets to their historic numbers as he speaks about his sabbatical
research on Yellow-crowned Parakeets and Kākāpō.

*Dr. Doug Robinson* is an evolutionary ecologist interested in the
environmental factors (physical and social) that contribute to bird
behavior. Dr. Robinson has been studying bird biology since 1994 and has
worked with grassland birds, seabirds, and conducted long-term behavioral
research on American Crows. As a Associate Professor of Biology at Mount
Saint Mary College in Newburgh, NY, he has had the opportunity to teach
courses in Ecology, Evolution, Animal Behavior, Comparative Anatomy and
Physiology, Human Anatomy and Physiology, and a 3-week course in
Conservation of New Zealand plants and animals.

Our presentation will be:

*"Finding, identifying and appreciating Sparrows - field marks and more" by
Shai Mitra*
Much like shorebirds and gulls, sparrows are a challenge. Many species are
similar and difficult to observe, so an over-reliance on traditional
plumage-pattern field marks often leads to frustration. New York is an
excellent place to study these small, subtly marked birds because it hosts
a wide variety of breeding species and has a coastline that concentrates
migrants and vagrants. This talk will focus on understanding sparrows in
terms of their biology and behavior, recognizing groups of species and age
groups that behave in different ways, and applying the most useful
identification tools.

*Shai Mitra* has studied birds in the northeastern United States and around
the world for more than 40 years. He received a BA in Biology from Cornell
University in 1989 and a PhD in Evolutionary Biology from the University of
Chicago in 1996. From 1996-2000 he operated a bird-banding station at the
Fire Island Lighthouse.. Currently, he is an Assistant Professor of Biology
at the College of Staten Island, with research interests in the areas of
avian ecology, evolution, and conservation. Shai is Editor of The Kingbird,
the quarterly publication of the New York State Ornithological Association;
co-compiler of bird records for the New York City and Long Island region;
Chair of the Rhode Island Avian Records Committee; and co-compiler of the
Southern Nassau County and Napatree, Rhode Island, Christmas Bird Counts.
