[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach West End
This afternoon drove over to Jones Beach West End. There's an adult white morph snow goose foraging with a small group of Canada Geese in front of the NYS Park Police Station. At the Coast Guard station there was a Horned Grebe rather close to the dock and just to the east of the sand spit along the far edge there were 2 adult female Common Goldeneye(s). A small group of horned larks continue in the east parking lot of WE2. Tomorrow should be warmer! [nysbirds-l] Jones Beach West End
This afternoon took a ride to JB West End CG station. In the hedgerow area I and another birder named Harry, saw a Dickcissel and a Lincoln's Sparrow among the usual sparrows. and as mentioned lots of Juncos. The lone Marbled Godwit was still present in the sandbar area (the far side) with 3 Western Willets. [nysbirds-l] Jones Beach West End
I stopped at JB coast guard station around 11:30 and saw a juvenile Summer Tanager near the gazebo (east of parking lot). Interesting, considering Summer Tanager posting at Fort Tilden/Riis Park There was a clay-colored sparrow (with two eyes) in the hedgerow (fence side) mixed with White-throated sparrows. Also on that same side were some immature + female Indigo Buntings. Shorebirds on the sand bar were scarce considering some boaters decided to colonize there. Btw, last week, on two separate occasions I've seen one (1) American Golden Plover amongst the great numbers of BB Plovers on the sand bar. The first one was a juvenile and the second an adult. [nysbirds-l] Jones Beach West End
I was at West End 2 yesterday around 1:00PM and saw (1) Baird's Sandpiper and (1) Buff-Breasted sandpiper on the edge of the swale (closest to the ocean). The day before, on Wednesday there was one tern, a Caspian Tern among a small group of GBB gulls in the swale. It stayed for a short time and then exited right. Re: [nysbirds-l] Hercules' Club/Devil's Walking Stick
There is a nice publication from the NY Botanical Garden called */Mistaken Identity? [nysbirds-l] Jones Beach/West End/Twin Lakes/Massapequa
My Brother and I decided to head out to JB. Stopped at the CG station where we saw 20-30 Horned larks on the "Longspur" field adjacent to the parking lot. Didn't see any Longspurs this time though. The group of BH cowbirds was still there also. WE field 2 was closed so we headed to the TR sanctuary where we were rewarded with 2 "Ipswich" Savannah's hanging out in some small shrubs just past the Mens Room. They were very cooperative and we watched them for a good while. There were lots of sparrows foraging near the building. All along the parkways there were sparrows on or just off the road; the small areas that had no snow cover. We made our obligatory trip to Tobay, which was open (JFK was not) and saw little more than Buffleheads, RB mergansers, C. geese and brandt. Headed to Twin Lakes Preserve where we saw the usual fare but there were about 8 commom Mergansers which I had not seen there this winter. Usual Fare: Ring necked ducks, Northern Shoveler, Ruddy Ducks, Pie-billed Grebe, Hooded Merganser,GB Heron. Last stop Massapequa Preserve; Still 2 Tundra Swans among the 4-5 Mute swans. Also saw a pie-billed grebe which I haven't seen there this year. All in all, not a bad outing Peter Bookalam Farmingdale, NY -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html 3) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
