[nysbirds-l] Connecticut Warbler - No
I was back at the Deli Fields at the Bashakill this morning between 6:30 - 7:30 and could not relocate the Connecticut Warbler. When I left Scott Baldinger and others were still present looking for the bird. There were, however, many birds present including at least five Lincoln's Sparrows as well as a Marsh Wren that gave good looks. -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
[nysbirds-l] Connecticut Warbler #2
For the second time in less than a week I found a Connecticut Warbler at the Deli Fields area of the Bashakill WMA. The first was found on 9/14 (see earlier post) and the second was found this morning in the same hedge row approximately 100 feet from where the previous bird was found. Again, this was a first year bird. While I had good looks at the bird it was not as cooperative as the earlier bird and it stayed low in the bushes or on the ground. While this could be the same bird, I would believe this to be a new arrival based on very favorable migration conditions over this past weekend, and the fact we are now in the peak migration time for this species. -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
[nysbirds-l] Deli Fields, Bashakill WMA
This morning I arrived at the deli fields at 6:30 A.M. planning to spend a few hours in this location and then move on to bird a few others in the Bashakill. A few hours turned into almost five hours before I left. The first hour started slowly, and while there were birds present, there were not the numbers I had hoped for after good wind conditions overnight. Once the haze in the valley began to burn off the birds started to show in very large numbers. The highlights this morning were at least three Olive-sided Flycatchers, although there may have been as many as five. Two Tennessee Warblers as well as Wilson's, N. Paurla and Pine were present in the large numbers of at least twelve warbler species moving in the trees along the field edges. Hummingbirds have been had to come by the past week or so but I had eleven this morning. Four Vireo species including two Philadelphia Vireos were present. My first Ruby-crowned Kinglet of the fall showed itself as did at least 5 Scarlet Tanagers and ten Rose-breasted Grosbeaks. The show of the morning, however was the numbers of Lincoln's Sparrows. This species numbers have been growing each day throughout the week with a high count of at least a dozen birds today. If anything this count is low as they were present throughout the fields as were large numbers of Chipping Sparrows and Song Sparrows. A few Swamp and White-throated were present as well. This past week this area has been very productive and has always been one of the best spots in Sullivan County for sparrows. If anybody would like information or directions concerning this area, feel free to contact me via email. -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
[nysbirds-l] Connecticut Warbler
This morning at 7:10 A.M. I found a Connecticut Warbler at the Bashakill WMA. The bird was located, in what most people familar with the Bashakill call the Deli fields. If you are coming in from Route 17 on 209 you pass the Haven Road exit and follow Rt. 209 until you see the Westbrookville Deli on your right. Directly across the road from the deli is a boat access road on the left. Take this road for about 1/10 of a mile and the fields are on both sides of the road. The bird was found in some low bushes around a tree on the left side of the road about 150 feet before you would enter the woods at the end of the road. I called Scott Baldinger and John Haas immediately and within five minutes or so Scott arrived. We watched the area as many birds were moving in and out of this area. At one time three birds flew up and as I was looking at a Yellowthroat Scott said he was on bird with a eye ring. It was the Connecticut Warbler and it was a lifer for Scott. We got great looks at the bird in the open for about 20-30 seconds before it flew from a low branch to the ground on the other side of the road. At this time John arrived as I was leaving for work. I spoke to Scott an hour later but he said they were unable to relocate the bird. This is my first Sullivan County record for this species. -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
[nysbirds-l] Sullivan County Waterfowl
I had a fabulous morning of birding this morning in northern Sullivan County. Last nights weather event produced a significant fallout of waterfowl in the county. Even small bodies of water seemed to hold at least a few birds. My list of sightings is as follows: Kiamesha Lake: 1 - Pied-billed Grebe 3 - Horned Grebe 1 - Red-necked Grebe 52- Bufflehead 9 - Ring-necked Duck 12- Long-tailed Duck 3 - Lesser Scaup (John Haas reported 8 later in the morning) Morningside Lake: 18- Horned Grebe 2 - Red-necked Grebe 4 - Bufflehead 9 - Long-tailed Duck 2 - Ruddy Duck Neversink Res. : 2 - Gadwall 7 - Black Duck 10- Bufflehead 5 - Red-breasted Merganser 30- Long-tailed Duck 6 - Ring-billed Gull 1 - Bonaparte's Gull Rondout Res: 3 - Bufflehead 3 - Red-breasted Merganser 1 - Common Loon Swan Lake: 4 - Horned Grebe 3 - Mallard 8 - Black Duck 9 - Ring-necked Duck 14- Lesser Scaup 17- Green-winged Teal 20- Bufflehead 2 - Ruddy Duck 1 - Common Loon Kauneonga Lake: 23- Bufflehead 3 - Red-breasted Merganser 7 - Lesser Scaup Superior Lake: 1 - Horned Grebe 35- Bufflehead 2 - Ring-necked Duck 7 - Lesser Scaup Also had an additional 5 Long-tailed Ducks on a small pond near Liberty and 1-2 Eastern Meadowlarks in Bethel. My only disappointment was I couldn't find any scoters which was surprising considering the numbers of other sea ducks in the county. -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
[nysbirds-l] Northern Shrike - Sullivan County
This morning on my way to work I spotted a immature Northern Shrike on Route 42 just before the pipeline clearing in Forestburg. This bird is very brown with no white in the wings while perched, and a very vague mask. This location is approximately a mile or so before the Orange County border. You can reach this location off Route 17 by taking either Exit 104 or 105 (Monticello exits) and follow the signs for Route 42. If anybody would like to contact me concerning the location feel free to email me. -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
