[nysbirds-l] Woodcocks

2011-02-18 Thread robsbate
Speaking of impending spring: on Wednesday I had a Woodcock foraging in the
Brooklyn Botanic Garden and yesterday one out at Floyd Bennett Field (also in
Brooklyn). The bird at FBF was "peenting" in the brush before hopping out onto
the edge of the tarmac and then flying off.

It won't be long now.

[nysbirds-l] Montauk Point

2010-12-29 Thread robsbate
There were huge numbers of all three Scoter species as well as Common Eiders at
Montauk Point today, all mostly on the Sound side. My wife Tracy and I also
got great looks at four or more Razorbills landing and feeding with some of the
closer Eiders.

We also saw a beautiful adult Lesser Black-backed Gull among a large flock of
gulls feeding on Starfish trapped on shore, also at the point.

The previously mentioned Black Vulture was flying low over Camp Hero and I'm
90% sure we saw an immature Red-shouldered Hawk near Third House.

(On a side note, the two female Harlequin Ducks I reported at Fort Tilden last
week were probably immature Scoters as I do question how good a look I had and
as no one else has seen two females though the lone male has been seen by many.
 My apologies.)

[nysbirds-l] Sora in Prospect Park/ Brooklyn

2010-09-14 Thread robsbate
I had good looks at a juvenile Sora this morning between 8 and 8:30. The bird
was foraging in the swampy area next to the stand of phragmites on the path
along the north side of the Lullwater just north of the skating rink and just
before a fork in the path that leads up slope to the Terrace Bridge.

[nysbirds-l] Shawangunk Grasslands

2010-03-08 Thread robsbate
This late afternoon at Shawangunk Grasslands NWR I saw one Rough-
legged Hawk; 6+ Northern Harriers including 3 gray ghosts flying and
hunting together; and 5+ Short-eared Owls.

I heard Barred Owls and caught sight of one flying close to the
parking area off Hogerburgh Road. Also heard a Woodcock (I think).

I got Christine's post about the Gyrfalcon and almost ran over to New
Paltz from the Grasslands but I figured to be just too late as night
was falling. Hopefully tomorrow.

It was my first visit and a great one, evidently a welcome habitat for
SEO.
