[nysbirds-l] STFL 11:15 AM Krumkill Road Albany
The Scissor-tailed Flycatcher was still present this morning on the telephone wire by the red barn at 11:15 and vocalizing. After about ten minutes, it made a beeline for cover in a nearby deciduous tree when a Merlin swooped through the field. As of 11:35 it remained in hiding but will probably return to its perch eventually. [nysbirds-l] Brown Booby Update
The Brown Booby is still present now st 4PM at Lake Montauk. It can be seen from Star Island Road, sitting on a green Channel Marker, #11. On Star Island Rd, proceed to the Snug Harbor Marina building and find a parking spot in the lot just past it. Cross to the other side of the road and look out over the lake. If you walk too far past the “Mickey’s” white dumpster in the lot, the channel marker won’t be visible behind the point of land on the left and you won’t be able to see the bird. The bird is distant and hard to see in this location even with binoculars. Re: [nysbirds-l] 2/1 Tupper Lake/Essex County recap and additional info
No Ross's Gull has been seen so far today. Birders were at both the boat launch and the causeway by 7:00. It was snowing until about 11:30am and visibility was poor all morning. A very small area of open water persists near the launch and a more generous amount is open at the causeway. Nice clearing of weather during the past 45 minutes has not produced a sighting. [nysbirds-l] Photos of Probable Manx Shearwater August 7th Hudson River
Some photos of the probable Manx Shearwater observed by Walter Joseph on the Hudson River in the Newburgh area on August 7th have been uploaded to Flickr (link below). If you are a newbie to Flickr, as we were, you'll want to know that after selecting a photo you can right-click on it, choose "original", and view the photo greatly enlarged with relatively little loss of resolution. In some cases you may have to use the scroll bar at the bottom of your screen to bring the bird back into the frame. Because this bird was located right in the middle of the river, it's unclear which county it technically was in and we're leaving it up to NYSARC to make that determination. http://flic.kr/ps/2wpKT9 Susan Joseph Rhinebeck, Dutchess County, NY -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

[nysbirds-l] Probable Manx Shearwater on Hudson River in Newburgh This Evening
A probable Manx Shearwater was observed and photographed this evening by an experienced birder between 4:30 and 5:00 on the Hudson River north of the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge, across from the Central Hudson power plant. The bird was well described and upwards of 15 photos were taken using an iPhone 5, which were enlarged and posted along with more details, including the GPS coordinates, on the New York Birders Facebook page. Many thanks to Deb Kral for her efforts to get the information out. This bird did not appear to be headed south; rather, was relatively stationary for about 30 minutes after which the observer had to leave the area. A report will be made to NYSARC. I live in Rhinebeck, Dutchess County and I saw my FOS Broad-wings today. They were a pair. One hawk was eating something. The other one sat about a foot away in the same tree. I watched for about ten minutes. Re: [nysbirds-l] Broadwing, etc. flight on Sun.
I live in Rhinebeck, Dutchess County and I saw my FOS Broad-wings today. They were a pair. One hawk was eating something. The other one sat about a foot away in the same tree. I watched for about ten minutes. [nysbirds-l] Southlands Nelson's Sparrow Saturday 10/24- No
At about 1:30 yesterday, Steve Schuyler ( a member of the Mearns club) and I scoured the swales at Southlands where the Nelson's Sharp-tailed Sparrow has been seen for the past week, but we were unable to locate the bird. It became very windy shortly after we arrived at Southlands and possibly that kept the bird out of view. We spent about two hours searching. For anyone who might go today, if you walk along the cattail swale on the west side of the road, continue until you spot another small stand of cattails running parallel to the road. It's hard to see from the road because of the slight rise in the land. In this stand of cattails, I spotted a small brown bird fly into the reeds from south to north at so low an elevation it almost looked like it was skimming the water. The bird dropped down quickly. Steve watched as I walked alongside east-facing side of the ditch (it was not very long) trying to flush the bird. By the time I got to the end, he hadn't seen anything and neither had I. However, as I was crossing over the water to continue my sweep going in the opposite direction, I saw the bird again fly up, staying very low and flying only a distance of 1-2 feet before dropping back down again. Because I was on the opposite side of the cattail stand from Steve, he wasn't able to see the bird's second appearance. The light was poor and my glimpses were so fleeting that venturing a guess as to the identification of the bird is out of the question, but folks who go today may wish to check that area.
