[nysbirds-l] Correction-Mourning Warbler, Jones Beach Coast Guard Station, Jones Beach West End

2016-10-22 Thread Keith Cashman
Apologies for not posting correct location. Second upon further review and
assistance (Tim Healy) I am confident that the bird was not a Connecticut
Warbler but a Mourning Warbler. I apologize for any inconvenience.

That being said, the bird is working the fence that separates the Coast Guard
Facility and the access path. It flies to second temporary radio antenna and
walks/hops to driveway and repeats.

Very windy so good luck if attempting to view bird

bird at the south end at 7am. He got a much closer pic, which Andrew just
helped me ID as a Wilson's.
Not sure if it's still around. It had left the overlook while my group was
still there, and was not at the south end when we visited later on. We left the
east pond around 9:15am.
My apologies, and good luck if you go looking for it.

[nysbirds-l] correction/addendum [tern sp.], C.P., 5/17

2016-05-18 Thread Thomas Fiore
In Central Park (Manhattan, N.Y. City) on early Tuesday a.m. (17 May),
a tern I'd seen as a fast fly-by and in low light was a *possible*
Forster's, & goes into my own notes simply as "Sterna" [genus] "sp."
All terns are rare in Central Park at least in modern times, despite
the above-noted & other tern species breeding not far away.

[n.b., for today Wed. 5/18, Central Park is again quite active with
many migrants.]

In my haste to submit my ebird report for Dune Road, Suffolk County, NY on

I belatedly realized this mistake and apologize for any hopes that this bird

I now know it must have been between 5/18/08 and 5/24/08.

[nysbirds-l] Correction: Jones Beach Coast Guard

2014-09-15 Thread Robert Taylor
Sorry for the multiple posts - I wanted to get the word out quickly but was
hasty in my post - the ID of Golden Plover (American) was incorrect - was a
Black Bellied, however I have a positive id on the godwits - were actually
a Hudsonian and a Marbled. The mixed flock (mostly Oystercathers with
Black Bellied Plovers, Red Knots) were on the North side of the sandbar.
They took off heading Northwest. The Marbled left the group and walked to
the south side of the sandbar and stayed longer. Also present in the
evening were a Royal Tern, Forster Terns and a Lesser Blacked Gull. A
Caspian Tern was at the marina in the morning but didn't stay long heading
east. As it was flying away it was dive-bombing hard into the water.

I will update my blog in the coming days with photos (
http://longislandbirding.blogspot.com/)

Good fall birding,

[nysbirds-l] correction re Suffolk shorebirding

2014-09-02 Thread Douglas Futuyma
With considerable chagrin, I have to say that my reported Buff-breasted
Sandpiper may have been the Baird's that Eileen Schwinn and Mike Higgiston
reported from the same place. My bird was very distant, through thermal
distortion, and I based my ID more on its foraging behavior than on
morphology. That may have been a mistake.

[nysbirds-l] correction to earlier post - Western - NO, Hybrid-Yes

2013-07-08 Thread David Klauber
A few days ago I made an incorrect post of a breeding plumage Western Sandpiper
at Pike's Beach. I initially struggled with the ID due to the off size and
plumage (especially the Pectoral-like breast markings), but lazily backed into
Western Sandpiper as the likeliest candidate - wrong. I heard about a hydrid
Dunlin-White-rumped but only just saw a picture now on Andrew Baksh's website,
and realized it was the same bird. Apologies for any confusion caused by my
post, but anyone lucky enough to find this bird saw something more interesting
than a Western. Very good ID by the Andrews, very bad ID by me

Thanks Kathy.

To support your post. I picked up a MSG late last night from Eric Miller who
reported that there were possibly even more than the 5 Arctic Terns on the
Cupsogue Flats yesterday that was posted.

BTW, Eric lost his cell phone out there. Not sure if it was lost in any of the
channels or dropped on the flats. If found, please let him know.

[nysbirds-l] CORRECTION -

2013-02-12 Thread Luke Ormand
Ok - 6 e-mails in about 1 minute alerted me to the fact that it should have
said semi-palmated PLOVER, not sandpiper. Apologies! At least I caught it
tonight instead of sending a whole legion of birders out there tomorrow
Thanks for all of the responses alerting me to this.

[nysbirds-l] CORRECTION: Now 6 Eurasian Wigeon, West Sayville Golf Course (Suffolk)

2013-01-20 Thread Derek Rogers
There are now 6 EURASIAN WIGEON on the pond at West Sayville Golf Course. 3
drakes and 3 hens. My earlier suspicion of more than 1 hen wouldn't rest so I
returned to the site at 2:40.

The birds were much easier to detail this time around as they were spread out
on the pond, rather than a tight knit herd on the grasses.

Michael McBrien and I noted 3 hen Eurasian Wigeons at this location on 1/1/13,
along with 1 continuing drake. So it is apparent that these birds are all
continuing with the recent addition of 2 drakes.

[~BEGIN RBA TAPE~]

Greetings. This is the New York Rare Bird Alert for Friday, January
4th, at 7:00pm. The highlights of today's tape are BARROW'S
GOLDENEYE, TUFTED DUCK, BARNACLE GOOSE, GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE,
Eurasian form of GREEN-WINGED TEAL, SNOWY OWL, BLACK-HEADED GULL,
CLAY-COLORED SPARROW, and Winter Finches.

The Southern Nassau Christmas Count on Saturday recorded 129 species.
Highlights included the two drake EURASIAN WIGEONS on the ponds at
Massapequa Preserve, a Eurasian GREEN-WINGED TEAL at Smith Pond in
Hempstead, 18 COMMON EIDER and count period HARLEQUIN DUCK, 1 SNOWY
EGRET, 14 GREAT EGRETS, and a YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON, 4 NORTHERN
GOSHAWKS, ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK and BALD EAGLE, 9 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS,
RED KNOT, count period LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL and ICELAND GULL, 2
RAZORBILLS and 2 BARN OWLS, 19 TREE SWALLOWS, COMMON YELLOWTHROAT,
LAPLAND LONGSPUR, 27 RED CROSSBILLS, 20 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS, 13
COMMON REDPOLLS, and 1 PINE SISKIN, 199 BOAT-TAILED GRACKLES, 9
"Ipswich" SAVANNAH SPARROWS, and 1 CHIPPING SPARROW.

The Putnam Count last weekend netted 78 species, including 5 SNOW
GEESE, 9 BALD EAGLES and 2 PEREGRINE FALCONS, 6 AMERICAN PIPITS,
COMMON REDPOLL, and 5 PINE SISKINS.

The drake TUFTED DUCK was still being seen around the south end of
Huntington Harbor through Thursday. Look for the duck especially
around the marinas at the southeastern portion of the harbor around
Halesite, the Town Park there offering a good vantage point. The duck
does like to feed among the docked boats, so look carefully.

The Bronx BARNACLE GOOSE continues to visit the Parade Ground with
Canada Geese at Van Cortlandt Park. If not there, try the lake by the
golf course. Tuesday the Parade Ground also produced a LAPLAND
LONGSPUR with 21 Horned Larks.

Staying with waterfowl, out in Montauk a pair of BARROW'S GOLDENEYE
(drake and hen) were found Wednesday at the south end of Lake Montauk
as viewed from South Lake Drive on the north side of Route 27. Also
seen there was the elusive immature BLACK-HEADED GULL feeding with
Bonaparte's. Two ICELAND GULLS remain around the Montauk Harbor
Inlet, RAZORBILLS continue off Montauk Point, and some RED and
WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS continue at a few different Montauk locations.
A drake EURASIAN WIGEON was still at the Deep Hollow Ranch and Teddy
Roosevelt County Park area last weekend, and a CACKLING GOOSE also
remains there.

At Napeague, the SNOWY OWL continues at times to be visible as it
perches on Hicks Island across from the end of Lazy Point Road, and
the adult LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was also still there.

Six GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE were around Further Lane and Hook Pond
in East Hampton last weekend, with CACKLING GOOSE also on Hook.

Birds at the EECO Farm in East Hampton recently have featured two
CLAY-COLORED SPARROWS and one LINCOLN'S SPARROW. Hulse Landing Road
in Wading River also has hosted CLAY-COLORED SPARROW, VESPER SPARROW,
and WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW, plus COMMON REDPOLL.

The BARNACLE GOOSE, plus a GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE often in the
same vicinity, continue to be seen at Belmont Lake State

[nysbirds-l] Correction Orchard Beach

2012-08-17 Thread Myspirit6950
As I stated in my e-mail to the list that I believe I saw a Wilson's
Plover, I do stand corrected. The bird I saw was possibly a Killdare or
Semipalmated. It's not my intention to cause a stampede or mislead anyone, as I
 had
said in my post it's hard for me to tell what species a bird is and in my
introduction to the list, I did say I was a new birder. My apologies to
those I may have caused an over excitement and in the future I'll be very
careful when I report a sighting. Thank you one and all for gracious
understanding. This morning I'm going back to Orchard Beach in the Bronx, NY
to
photograph what I see and I hope someone will help me identify the birds in
the
pictures so I may learn more about birds and birding, as this adventure is
exciting and stimulating. Happy and pleasant birding,

[nysbirds-l] Correction: Tripletts Bridge, not Balcony Bridge

2012-08-02 Thread Nadir Souirgi
I checked out the North End of C.P. in the early evening and ran into
Pat Pollock who thankfully corrected my mis-designation of the first
area I mentioned in my post yesterday. That area was the stream west
of Tripletts Bridge, not Balcony Bridge where I found the
Waterthrushes. We birded a bit together and turned up nothing in the
Loch save for expected nesting species. After parting ways I did
manage to find one lone presumed Ruby-Throated Hummingbird along the
eastern edge of the East Blow-down Meadow and one Northern Waterthrush
chipping from the western edge of the Pool near the big Willow.
Keep'em up!

Keep'em up!
