[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach State Park Birds (Nassau Co.)

2016-10-15 Thread Ken Feustel
There was a good amount of bird activity at JBSP early this morning. Starting
at dawn, I birded West End then moved east to Zach’s Bay. Shortly after dawn a
calling Dickcissel was observed flying down the beach near the marina parking
area. On the sandbar were some three hundred American Oystercatchers with three
Western Willets mixed in. Both kinglets were present in good numbers, but
sparrows, due to intensive hawk activity (Merlins and Cooper’s Hawk), were
confined to the thick shrubbery. A handsome male Baltimore Oriole briefly
perched in the median, but quickly disappeared. A visit to the ponds between
WE2 produced Pectoral, White-rumped, Semipalmated, and Least Sandpipers as well
as two Wood Duck, Pintail, Shoveler, Gadwall, and Green-winged Teal. A
cooperative American Pipit was meandering along the exposed pond edge. At the
temporary Field 6 entrance through the small parking lot a well-marked Lark
Sparrow was observed on the west side of the entrance. The incoming traffic
quickly flushed the bird to the east side of the entrance where it was
relocated in the early afternoon (photo). The late morning and afternoon proved
to be much better for sparrows as the raptor activity subsided. Warblers
numbers are declining quickly (except Yellow-rumped) - I observed only
Black-throated Blue(1), Black-throated Green(1), and Palm(2).

P.S. The annual Breast Cancer walk is at Zach’s Bay tomorrow (Sunday).

A cold weather front brought out some typical November migrants in good numbers
at West End this morning. Highlights included Red-winged Blackbird (4,400),
Robin (1200), and American Goldfinch (175). Present in small numbers were Rusty
Blackbird (10), American Pipit (9), and Purple Finch (3). At the Zach's bay
picnic area an Orange-crowned Warbler (photos on my flickr site) and Common
Yellowthroat were observed. Unfortunately we did not see a swallow all day.
Gannet numbers were impressive just off the beach in the early morning (we
briefly counted 750).

Good Birding,

Highlights of the late morning and afternoon at JBSP included a pair of
Gull-billed Terns on the sandbar at the West End Marina and the stunning
Red-headed Woodpecker on Bay Parkway (Thanks to Sam Janazzo & Bob Kurtz for the
heads-up). A few photos of the woodpecker are at my flickr site.

Sue and I spent a worthwhile four hours at JBSP this morning, birding from West
End east to Zach's Bay. There was a good movement of birds along the Jones
barrier beach, certainly the best we have seen this Spring. Highlights were our
FOY Parula Warbler and Blue-headed Vireo. There were good numbers of Northern
Flickers (115) and Hermit Thrush (20), but perhaps the most impressive was the
fifty-seven Ruby-crowned Kinglets we recorded. There was a decent variety of
sparrows (six species), with Dark-eyed Junco (66) being the most numerous. Also
present were four Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers, five Foster's Terns, and three
Brown Thrashers. This was not a big warbler day with Palm (4), Pine(1),
Yellow-rumped (16), and Parula (1) being the only representatives. Photos of
the Blue-headed Vireo observed today and the Hempstead Lake State Park
Yellow-breasted Chat (seen on April 5th) can be seen at
