[nysbirds-l] Pileated Woodpecker Sighting on Long Island
On June 5th I had a prolonged sighting of a male pileated woodpecker at the NSLA's Humes Preserve in Mill Neck while standing at the top of the stairs that lead down into the meadow. The bird flew from right to left across the length of the meadow and started to both vocalize and rap on a dead branch, soon after entering the forest. I watched it for another 30 seconds or so before it flew north out of sight. John Turner -- (copy & paste any URL below, then modify any text "_DOT_" to a period ".") [nysbirds-l] Pileated Woodpecker
We were fortunate to see the Pileated Woodpecker at Shu Swamp Preserve (Mill Neck, Long Island) this afternoon around 1:00. We followed the trail to the south (off the parking lot) which runs parallel to Frost Mill Rd. and headed in towards Beaver Brook. We were able to see him just east as well as west of the stream. He called a few times in the hour we were there and didn't stay in one spot long flying from tree to tree and high up. He was a wonderful bonus to our birding today as we had set out to the see the Pacific Loon by Oyster Bay Yacht Club.. The loon did not disappoint :) Happy birding everyone! Re: [nysbirds-l] Pileated Woodpecker, Shu Swamp, Nassau County
Went over to Shu. Heard pileated call just south of the fire lane. Headed that way. It flew across the stream and further south into the tops of the trees. Couldn’t quite locate - it was neither calling or drumming. Continued south on the path, watching in trees where thought it went, but apparently overshot it because suddenly, it reappeared flying south and disappeared. I continued to listen and I walked all the way to the Frost Mill Road and Lower Francis Pond. But frankly it could have gone anywhere. There are so many possibilities in that area, including the Japanese Stroll Garden, Upper Francis Pond Preserve or any number of private properties. Good luck if you go. Sue Herbst PS hope it does find your feeders Stella! That’d be exciting! > On Feb 10, 2019, at 12:15 PM, Stella Miller wrote: > > Wow. I live right next door to Shu. [nysbirds-l] Pileated Woodpecker(s), Long Island, week of 2/19
Hi folks, Apologies to the Upstaters for this local announcement, but there may now be Pileateds at more than one location. The previously reported bird in Melville (Suffolk) was seen through yesterday, last seen along Reservoir Rd just downhill and east of Ridge Rd. This is along the east edge of West Hills County Park, near Jayne’s Hill, the highest point on LI. And coming through on eBird from earlier this week, a report of another Pileated at Twin Lakes Preserve in Wantagh, Nassau county. Reporter was not exactly sure where in the park he was, but he noted a red building nearby. Note that this park straddles the Wantagh Parkway - the majority of forest is on the east side. I will post more information when I have it. Re:[nysbirds-l] Pileated Woodpecker
FYI, the dead end of Mount Misery Road is completely on the other side of West Hills County Park from Reservoir Road and Jayne's Hill (opposite sides of Sweet Hollow Rd., which bisects the park). So, not a good idea to access the park from Reservoir Rd. unless you want to go on a long hike as well as search for the woodpecker. [nysbirds-l] Pileated Woodpecker @ Oakland Lake
And now for a bird worth mentioning - a real rarity on Long Island. Eugene Harris found a Pileated Woodpecker this morning at Oakland Lake, along the Springfield Blvd. fence line. I first heard about it from Eric Miller, who searched unsuccessfully for it in Oakland Ravine. I would expect Eugene to post the picture on his Nature on Campus blog by tomorrow. http://www.qcc.cuny.edu/biologicalSciences/natureOnCampus/index.html So what of this reported radar imagery from last night? Must have been the birds that were here Saturday leaving. After wasting a lot of time in quiet places - although getting to see a Hooded Warbler (found by Tom and Gail?) at Forest Park - I stumbled into one exciting, localized cluster of activity in Alley Pond Park. Re: [nysbirds-l] PILEATED WOODPECKER IN THE BRONX
Debbie: There are Pileated Woodpecker records from The Bronx, Manhattan, and Queens: two from VanCortlandt Park (one photographed), one from Inwood Hill Park (also photographed), and one from Forest Park. I saw the photos of one of the VanCortlandt birds and the one from Inwood. Unfortunately, I don't remember who the observers were. But, I reported one (both?) of the VanCortlandt birds in the Kingbird when I wrote the Region 10 report (with guy Tudor) many years ago, and you can find this information online. The Forest Park bird was present for several days and was seen by the great Tom Davis among others. The Inwood and VanCortlandt birds were all in April. I don't remember the time of year of the Forest Park bird but I believe it was also in April. Knowing Tom, I'm sure that this record was also published. Apparently this is the time of year when Pileated Woodpeckers wander. Young birds looking for mates? Knowing all this is the advantage (the only advantage) of out-living most of my contemporaries. Nice find. I been looking for one for appear in Central Park for many years. [nysbirds-l] pileated woodpecker in manhattan
Hi all, I just received a call from Michael Dwyer. This morning at 7:58am he first heard than saw a Pileated Woodpecker in his backyard on 21st Street between 8th and 9th Aves. The bird then flew across the street towards PS 11. Michael's backyard isn't accessible to the public, but there are lots of trees the street. Good luck if you go.
