[nysbirds-l] Ravens in Shelter Island

2019-05-28 Thread Orhan Birol
As they extend their range in LI, I saw a pair over the Ice Pond and
the Goat Hill Golf course associating on the sky.
Last summer I saw a single bird soaring above my house, and next day
took a dive to my Purple Martin colony on my dock.
I keep on seeing a single Chimney Swift over the Ice Pond where there
is an abandoned chimney about 75' high. Please e-mail me if you know
who covered this area in the last breeding bird survey and whether
breeding was confirmed in this chimney.

[nysbirds-l] Ravens nesting at NYBG

2019-02-22 Thread Andrew Block
I just found out from my friend that instead of the owls or redtails nesting on
the library building at NYBG there are ravens nesting for the first time there!
I will have to go check them out and get some photos.  Also, if anyone cares
another friend told me the Mandarin Duck is still in Central Park but down in
the pond at the southern end.

off to an interesting start with a pair of adult ravens harassing a Redtail on
the Seatuck Environmental Association’s property. Probably a first for the

[nysbirds-l] Ravens nest - Patchogue village

2016-05-09 Thread leormand
I have not actually confirmed this - but an 90% certain there is a Ravens nest
atop a cell tower structure in Patchogue village. The best spot to view the
nest is from the front of the Knights of Columbus building at the intersection
of Edwards St and Bailey Ave (south of Montauk highway).

I have seen Ravens several times at this location and this weekend I observed
one Raven on the tower and a second flying to the top where there appeared to
be a stick structure.

[nysbirds-l] Ravens vs. Owls

2016-04-23 Thread Tim Healy
Huge spectacle at Hempstead Lake today. Three(!) Common Ravens flew low over
the tree tops, then looped around in formation and dove in on the Great Horned
Owl pair. What. A. Show. Fish Crows and Blue Jays also joined the scene, and
blows were definitely exchanged. Amazing to see these powerful birds square
off. I also spotted a raven flying over Lynbrook earlier this morning. Jones
Beach was gray and wet, but I found Forster's Terns, Greater Yellowlegs, Field
Sparrow, singing towhees and thrashers, Merlin, and a Peregrine. Hempstead Lake
also featured nesting gnatcatchers, a Wood Duck pair, and a Prairie Warbler
(heard singing just before the big bird showdown began). Light in migrants but
still a great morning!

Cheers!

[nysbirds-l] Ravens and Warblers

2016-04-20 Thread Tim Healy
I got a good bird before I even "went" birding when I head a Common Raven a
while walking home from the Lynbrook train station. I stopped first at
Hempstead Lake and connected with some expected species, but then the reports
came in mentioning good birds at Valley Stream. I ended up parking near
Hendrickson and walking north, which proved fortunate since I encountered
another raven atop a building adjacent to the park. The bird vocalized a few
times as it was chased off by some much smaller Fish Crows. I bumped into Arie
and the Zitos at Valley Stream and we searched the western stream. I spied a
silent flyover Chimney Swift: my first of the year. I lingered a bit longer
than the others and ran across the gorgeous male Hooded Warbler just before
sunset. Also had plenty of Yellow-rumps and Palms, in addition to some decent
overall activity. Checklists below.

Two Ravens are eating a squirrel at Brookhaven town hall in farmingville

The first one says "Can I eat the nuts?" And the second one says "Sorry- They

With apologies to Brookhaven town employees.

[nysbirds-l] Ravens - East Meadow water tower

2015-09-27 Thread Steve Williams
While wayching my sons Flag Football game my wife and I obseved 3 Ravens on
the East Meadow water tower. They were doing some flight acrobatics
together and croaking away for a good 20 minutes. They perched for a little
while before spitting up and flying off.

Not a rare bird but an unexpected suprise. Immature Red Tail cooling off in
a puddle near a water fountain right next to the walking path. Did not seem
to have any fear of people yet. A few people walked by while I was taking
pictures. He just kept bathing.

[nysbirds-l] Ravens @ Stuyvesant Town Manhattan NYC

2015-02-04 Thread Andrew Baksh
Anne Lazarus, reports two Ravens seen and heard around Stuyvesant Town over
the past few days.

I believe, Anne, Louise Fraza and Wendy saw a Raven during their CBC.

Birders in the area are encouraged to keep an eye and ear out for the
Ravens. Who knows, they might nest somewhere nearby.

Many thanks to Anne and her crew for their dedicated "patch birding" and
sharing the intel on interesting discoveries.

Cheers,

Andrew

[nysbirds-l] ravens nesting along North Co. Trailway

2014-05-18 Thread Andrew Block
I was told about ravens nesting along the North County Trailway just south of
Rte. 129 next to the New Croton Reservoir today so I checked them out on my way
back from a walk on the trail.  Low and behold there they were with three nests
on one of the electrical towers in the Kitchawan Preserve.  They really are
nesting everywhere around here.  So Cool.  I also think the pair was back
nesting on the bank facade in New Rochelle along Main St.

[nysbirds-l] Ravens, Rusty Blackbirds and a Peregrine Falcon at Kissena Park

2014-01-26 Thread Joseph O'Sullivan
After I saw a Red-tailed Hawk catch a pigeon yesterday in front of my
building, I knew there were birds to be seen if I braved the cold.

A few minutes after I entered the park I was at the pond and I saw a
Peregrine Falcon fly over the pond and scattered the gulls that say there
in the winter. It then flew north away from the park.

I later moved over to the baseball fields at the northwestern corner of the
park and saw a flock of Rusty Blackbirds foraging around the trees and
benches where there was little or no snow.

About a half hour later I was on the dirt path just south of the marsh and
I saw a pair of Common Ravens soaring over the center of the park.

The rest of the total of twenty species I saw I entered on ebird.

[nysbirds-l] Ravens in Babylon

2013-11-18 Thread Tim Dunn
I was surprised to observe a pair of common ravens at the Babylon train station
this morning. One bird vocalized in a decidedly non-crow like way, which
initially drew my attention, as crows are frequent there. Both birds perched
atop a high telephone pole before heading west over the RR tracks. Wedged tail,
shaggy appearance and large beaks well seen, first ones I've seen in Babylon
this year after seeing several here last year.

Also 1st winter wren of the season heard yesterday in Southards Pond area a
couple hundred yards in from the Park Avenue basketball courts.

Re: [nysbirds-l] Ravens nesting?

2013-03-29 Thread Mike
Following up on Dan Heglund's sightings of Common Ravens on the Shoreham power
plant in Wading RIver (Suffolk Co.)- Today I observed 2 Ravens grooming each
other for several minutes before flying around the southwest side of the
building.

Earlier I had a female Red Crossbill at the Longwood (Smith) Estate in Middle
Island. The bird called loudly and frequently from the tops of bare decidiuous
trees before heading into the hemlocks near the cemetary. An adult Cooper's
Hawk also remained quitely perched near the top of a tall evergreen next to the
main house. Derek Rogers has been finding Red Crossbills in the Calverton
Ponds property- I'd expect that this would be a great year to find crossbills
nesting in Suffolk County.

[nysbirds-l] Ravens in Babylon

2012-08-02 Thread Tim Dunn
On 7/20 at 8:45am, two common ravens were seen and heard on Dundee Avenue in
the Argyle Park section of Babylon. The birds vocalized frequently and stayed
around for about 15 minutes, mobbed by jays. They then flew north over the
south shore railroad line and out of sight.

I was out of town from 7/21 to 7/31, but on returning on 7/31at 7:00pm, two
ravens were again heard and seen in the same general location, about 200 yards
east of where they were seen 11 days earlier. Again, they flew north when
departing.

Given that ravens were seen in Babylon by me earlier this spring (reported to
this list at the time) both in Argyle Park and in the wooded area around
Southard's Pond, I think there is a strong possibility that they nested here in
western Suffolk County. This location is far enough away from other documented
Long Island raven nesting sites (Hampton Bays and Roslyn) that their repeated
local appearances certainly give rise to that probability.

Thanks,
Tim Dunn

[nysbirds-l] ravens fledged in New Rochelle

2012-06-04 Thread Andrew Block
Forgot to mention last thursday and friday I had four ravens flying around the
Shoprite and over 10 Commerce Dr. which I presume are the parents and two young
from the nest on Main St. in New Rochelle.  Pretty amazing.  I guess they're
the start of a colony:-)

Re: [nysbirds-l] Ravens - White Plains, West. Co.

2012-03-15 Thread Dan
Hello Rich,
When I used to drive Long Island often in a big rig all thru 2011, I reported
seeing 1 Common Raven usually at the southern end but twice on the northern end
of the Tappen Zee bridge.
Once at the sign announcing White Plains Westchester county. :)
Once I saw it flying with a large piece of bread in it's bill, also.

[nysbirds-l] Ravens - White Plains, West. Co.

2012-03-15 Thread Richard Guthrie
At noon, on Tuesday, March 13, I watched a C. Raven fly up from a downtown
parking lot in White Plains, Westchester County. That was unusual in itself,
but in addition, the bird was carrying a big bit of food (looked like a
bagel or roll) as if flew off. I watched it continue on as it disappeared
around one of the skyscrapers, food in beak.

In atlasing parlance, that would be "CO-FY", meaning that the species is
confirmed as breeding in that area. However, as ravens, and other corvids,
are prone to caching chow, I'd hesitate to jump to that conclusion just yet.
He/she may also be bringing some take-out back to its mate. Either way, it
does present an interesting possibility that, with the continuing expansion
of this species' distribution in NYS, bears monitoring.

I might add that there are plenty of both American and Fish Crows in
downtown White Plains - a three crow city.

[nysbirds-l] Ravens/peregrine in New Rochelle & Screech-owl in Greenburgh

2012-02-10 Thread Andrew Block
Had one of the ravens back again today this time around 10:30am flying east.
Then at noon one was flying around and calling over the train tracks and landed
on the huge billboard across from Commerce Drive.  It called and hopped around
on the sign going down behind it for about five minutes, the whole time
ignoring the fake owls and peregrine recordings playing on the billboard.  It
then flew off over 95 in a north direction and went down out of site.   No
signs of a nest yet but it's looking better.  Also had a screech-owl at
Greenburgh Nature Center on wednesday night.

[nysbirds-l] Ravens hanging around New Rochelle

2012-02-08 Thread Andrew Block
Had two of the Common Ravens I've been seeing at 10 Commerce Dr. in New
Rochelle again yesterday flying in a northeast direction.  They are always
coming back and coming from more or less the south so are definately in the
immediate area when roosting because I see them usually in the early to mid
morning.   I then today had one of them flying low over the Shoprite across the
street from me along Cedar St. and then land in the lot by the dumpsters.  The
other may have been with it but not noticed.   This is getting quite
interesting:-)

[nysbirds-l] Ravens were back in New Rochelle

2012-02-03 Thread Andrew Block
Two of the Common Ravens were back flying low around 10 Commerce Drive again
eventually flying more or less NW.  I was just telling my friend Doug yesterday
I hadn't seen them in awhile.

[nysbirds-l] Ravens in Hampton Bays

2011-06-30 Thread Hugh McGuinness
Dear NY Birders,

A pair of Ravens has apparently brought off a clutch in Hampton Bays
(Suffolk Co.). This afternoon, while running errands, I stopped by the
Hampton Bays water tower (in the center of town, just south of the railroad
tracks) and saw two birds perched on the towers. My first for Suffolk
Co--heck, for Long Island.

Two points seem worth mentioning: 1. An employee of the water district came
out and made sure that I was not taking photos of the birds on the tower. He
claimed that taking photos of the tower was illegal. I have no idea whether
that is true, but it might be nice not to aggravate the water authority
employees. 2. One can view the birds from a road that runs just south of the
tracks and west from Ponquogue Ave in the center of town. There is no need
to venture on to the water authority property itself, and there is plenty of
parking along the water authority fence.

[nysbirds-l] Ravens, Redpolls, etc

2011-02-26 Thread Seth Ausubel
Corey Finger and I visited the site of the COMMON RAVEN nest in Kew Gardens,
Queens County today. Sure enough the ravens are back and building a new
nest on the water tower. We observed two ravens bringing nest material.
There is a second new nest on the tower too, in an earlier state of
construction. This is most likely a false start. There is no trace of last
year’s nest.

At Jones Beach West End we had two fly-over COMMON REDPOLLS at the Coast
Guard Station. Then, with Doug Futuyma, we tracked down a flock of 19
Common Redpolls in the dunes just west of the boardwalk at the Theodore
Roosevelt Nature Center. We had another 9 Common Redpolls at Point Lookout.
Another group of birders reported a flock of 50 briefly alighting at the
Coast Guard Station. Snow buntings were prominent at the beach today. Some
of the males are near full breeding plumage, especially several in a flock
at Nickerson Beach west of Point Lookout. There were 8 HARLEQUIN DUCKS at
Point Lookout (4 ad. males, 2 imm. males, 2 fem.). Another highlight was 92
REDHEAD, on the pond at Willets Creek in Babylon, Suffolk County. This is
on the north side of Route 27A, about ½ mile west of the Robert Moses
Causeway.
