[nysbirds-l] Thick billed murre - yes

2019-01-04 Thread Christopher Gangemi
The Thick-Billed Murre continues at the Shinnecock Inlet. At 8:45 it was in the
mouth of the inlet, between the two jetties.

Also of note was a female Harlequin duck on the east side of the east jetty.

[nysbirds-l] Thick-billed Murre/Brooklyn

2014-03-05 Thread Shane Blodgett
About 3:45 this afternoon I had a THICK-BILLED MURRE fly by as I stood at the
base of Veteran's Memorial Pier, my last stop of a Brooklyn birding day that
started just after sunrise. I will post a link to the 4 shots I got (don't
expect too much) once I have a chance to upload them.

I heard second hand after seeing this bird that a TBMU found on a boat was
released near the Bayonne/Jersey City border earlier in the day so this could
quite possibly be the same bird.

Days other highlights were few:

59 COMMON GOLDENEYE in Rockaway Inlet
9 RED-NECKED GREBE (3 Floyd Bennett, 1 off Riis Landing, 2 Breezy Point, 2 @
58th Street Pier, 1 in Gravesend Bay)
~2250 LONG-TAILED DUCK off Breezy Point
71 COMMON LOON
84 HORNED GREBE
22 BLACK SCOTER off Breezy
8 WHITE-WINGED SCOTER off Breezy

Regards,
Shane Blodgett

[nysbirds-l] Thick-billed Murre follow up

2010-01-19 Thread Rob Jett
This afternoon Heydi Lopes and I went out to Coney Island to look for
the Western Grebe. We started at the Coney Island pier and planned to
walk east until we found the grebe or ran out of beach, whichever came
first. At approximately 2:15pm we were at Brighton 5th Street (in
Brighton Beach) when I spotted a Thick-billed Murre in the water. The
bird was ridiculously close to shore, probably no more than a few
yards. We watched it as it gradually made its way west, in the
direction of the pier. We had run into Starr Saphir and Lenore Swenson
earlier in our walk and contacted them about the murre. Heydi and I
then continued east looking for the grebe (which we did not locate).
On our return walk we spotted the murre again near the aquarium. Starr
and Lenore were on the bird. We caught up with them and the four of us
watched the bird which, at this point, was off the jetty at West 2nd
Street. Using the pier as reference, I'm guessing that the bird was
about 200 yards from the shore. When Heydi and I left at about 3:45pm
the bird was still present. Heydi was able to take quite a few photos
when we first located the bird at Brighton Beach. A link will follow
shortly.

Big thanks to Jean Loscalzo for getting the word out for us.

Good birding,

Rob

[nysbirds-l] Thick-billed Murre in Brooklyn Now

2019-01-18 Thread Doug Gochfeld
There is currently a Thick-billed Murre in Gravesend Bay, Brooklyn. It is
close to shore, swimming NW along the rim of the bay. I was viewing from
adjacent to the parking pulloff along the eastbound Belt Parkway just west
of (before) exit 5. It has covered a considerable amount of water heading
NW and is now closer to the pedestrian overpass to the north of there, and
if it continues ln this course it will eventually pass the next lot to the
NW, which is the eBird hotspot named “Gravesend Bay—Middle Lot” or
something close to that.

Re: [nysbirds-l] Thick-billed Murre follow up

2010-01-19 Thread fresha2411

The Murre was present through 5:00 PM, although it was moving very fast to the
East at this time. When we (Bob Gochfeld and I) first arrived around 4:00 PM we
couldn't find it for a while, but then Bob picked it out, sitting still at
least a quarter of a mile (probably more) offshore to the SE. Rob Bate showed
up a short time later and then the bird paddled in towards shore getting to
about 25 yards offshore before turning eastward and moving very fast
(alternately swimming and diving) towards Manhattan Beach. Dave Klauber showed
up just in time to see it before it disappeared the East (No public access from
Brighton Beach to Manhattan Beach).

If it's not seen at Coney Island Beach tomorrow, good spots to check Rockaway
Inlet from would be the Kingsborough Community College Jetty, Sheepshead Bay,
Plum Beach (as always), and Dead Horse Bay.

I've made a map of it's dusk activities here:

With all these murres, Razorbills, and kittiwakes hanging out right along the
coast this winter, it’s a real shame we lost the Brooklyn VI. I’d love to get
offshore and see what’s going on out there!

Re:[nysbirds-l] Thick-billed Murre in Brooklyn Now

2019-01-18 Thread John Gluth
I’m seriously considering paying the $95 for a 10-hour codfish trip aboard the
Laura Lee Express out of Captree. Half the price of a See Life trip. Two trips
each weekend through the end of March. Much more convenient for Suffolk birders
than Brooklyn. If memory serves from past cod trips (before birding became my
passtime of choice), chum (clam chunks) is employed. It’s not fish oil, but
couldn’t hurt.

Re: [nysbirds-l] Thick-billed Murre in Brooklyn Now

2019-01-18 Thread Ryan
I caught sight of the TBMU at around 3:50 from 92 street pedestrian overpass
and followed it up to the Veterans Pier. It came in just a few feet from the
end of the pier, then floated inland to the area just south of the wastewater
treatment plant. It stuck around for a while then dove and we lost sight of it
after that.

Thanks for the alert!

[nysbirds-l] Thick-billed Murre in Brooklyn right now

2013-01-13 Thread fresha2411
Rob Jett just called to report that he and Heydi Lopes have just found a
Thick-billed Murre in Dead Horse Bay.

It is behind the usual massive flock of Greater Scaup (which includes at least
one Canvasback that they just found).

>From his description, it sounds like the Murre is roughly here:
40.582019,-73.90224

Viewed from here:
40.581579,-73.896339

If coming by car, you must park at Aviator Sports Parking Lot (across Flatbush
Avenue, in Floyd Bennett Field), and walk south. I suppose that alternatively
you could park in the Brooklyn Golf Driving Range, but it is not much closer
and is technically private (I think).
The entrance to the Aviator Lot is here (at a traffic light):
40.590335,-73.900652

Walk down the street to the access of the trails (a bus stop is also here) here:
40.581571,-73.891704

Plugging these coordinates into Google Maps will yield a green arrow marking
the locations.

Good Birding

[nysbirds-l] Thick-billed Murre - Tiana Beach (Suffolk Co.)

2015-02-08 Thread Ken Feustel
At approximately 10:00AM this morning a Thick-billed Murre was observed in the
ocean off the Tiana Beach (Dune Road) pavilion. The bird was observed swimming
west. Other than the Murre there was not much else, although American Bittern
and Black-crowned Night Heron were observed on the north side of Dune Road near
Dolphin Lane. I then headed to the Riverhead farm fields to once again try for
the elusive (for me, anyway) Pink-footed Goose. Although there were many Canada
Geese present, and they were scattered all over the fields between Doctor’s
Path and Rt. 105, the best I could do was two Cackling Geese and one
White-fronted Goose. Also present was a dark morph Rough-legged Hawk.

A Thick-billed Murre briefly came into view while scoping the area near Rocky
Point Marsh. It dove shortly after and I could not relocate it.

It might be worth checking near the Plum Beach area as well.
