RE: [Ogf-l] RE: OGL Logos

2006-08-13 Thread Roger Bert
If 4E is not licensed then you can't brand your OGL products to D&D or d20
for that matter. The d20 System Trademark license and licensees will likely
be rescinded by WOTC. Who are you going to be branding too?

Perhaps today a little "OGL" logo means it is compatible with D&D more or
less for the very few purchasers who know what the OGL is or even notice the
logo. But this will be meaningless when the logos disappear from the real
D&D books.

If your product is not meant to be played with D&D than using a logo is
really meaningless even now. Gamers want a fun and useable game and they
could care less if publishers can re-use their material. Gamers can reuse
anything they want!

And, to be blunt, most of the publishers are not re-using material from
other companies. Sure, there has been a little. But like I said the people
who could reuse the material already know what to look for.

There is no need for an OGL logo and this is especially true if 4E is not
released under the OGL.

Product branding, artwork, and any logos should relate to the product (and
publisher) and not to the OGL.

Roger, marketing isn't just about what currently works under an existing
system but also what can be made to work under a new framework. If 4e is
released and isn't licensed, alternatives will become necessary to anyone
looking to continue their OGL lines with any sort of non-WotC related
branding. That too, is (as you put it), a fact.

I can't believe that everyone is so interested in someone else's logos and
willing to debate it so much.

Here is the fact: The only logo that means anything is the d20 System logo.

It means something to most D&D players out there. It means something to them
because Wizards of the Coast spent a lot of marketing dollars on it and it
is seen on every D&D book. Heck, even all the 3E D&D player's haven't even
noticed it or care. I mean no offense to anyone but none of you need an OGL
logo. You would be better served using the time and money you would spend on
an OGL logo to make your product better.

The very, very, very few gamers out there that care about the OGL already
know what to look for.

Good Gaming.

RE: [Ogf-l] updates to RSRD and/or MSRD

2006-06-26 Thread Roger Bert
Greetings. Everything they have added to the MSRD after the release. Things
like the d20 Future material, Menace Manual material, and some material from
Urban Arcana. All of these were added later. I also believe they have added
to the regular SRD some material from Deities and Demigods, the epic-level
materials, and from both psionic handbooks. All in all these were helpful
contributions.

In the past there have been updates and additions. I believe it has been a
while since any new material has been contributed. I have been very
impressed with the new material that Wizards has contributed, especially to
the Modern SRD. I guess I am saying thanks to the folks at Wizards and
hoping it does continue.

[Ogf-l] Errata and Updates

2006-05-06 Thread Roger Bert
Greetings.

Has any of the errata such as the new Polymorph changes been incorporated
into the SRD? Have they done this in the past? Is there a web page that
lists the current file date of each individual SRD file or some way to track
changes simply? Is Wizards still making common updates to the SRD as they
have done in the past with the Modern SRD? Is it allowed to use updated
errata in d20 or OGL offerings?

Thanks.

I believe "Potation" is a word for distilled or extracted. It has also come
to mean drinks that have been distilled (like alcohol). It is a horrible
choice of wording in the OGL.

DM's Familiar, www.paladinpgm.com/dmf, has them in a DBF format which you
should be abel to merge. Download the free demo and look in the DATA folder.
The spell.dbf has all the spells in it.

[Ogf-l] Looking for spreadsheet of d20 PHB spells

2003-11-26 Thread Roger Bert
Greetings. Sorry for the slightly-off topic message here.

I am looking for a spreadsheet or file with the particulars of the d20/PHB
spells so I can create some spell cards with a lucky Mail Merge or two. I
was going to type this in myself but I figured this must have been done
before. Any CSV, Excel, or compatible format will work.

Thanks and Good Gaming.

RE: [Ogf-l] Why OGL?

2003-11-15 Thread Roger Bert
Hello. Video Game RPG's are strictly not allowed under the d20 System
Licenses. And I wonder why you would want to try to build a D&D based game
that you could never call D&D without a license from Wizards of the Coast.

In my humble opinion, many times have designers tried to model D&D for
officially licensed video games and failed. Why try to model D&D when you
could never call it that? Instead come up with something that works for you
and your potential customers that is fun! So what if it is similar to D&D
because just about every level-based RPG gives D&D a nod or too.

Good Gaming!

Hello,
I'm new here and I'm contemplating using the D&D OGL in a freeware MMORPG
I'm developing. I've read it and understand the basics but I feel I'm
missing something. Now, as I understand it it, I still won't be able to use
an official logo or even make a reference to D&D like, based on or uses
'Dungeons and Dragons 3.5' rules. If this is so, WHY SHOULD I BOTHER? I
could just go the route of a game like Darkstone that looks and smells like
a D&D game but it's merely cooinsidental (wink-wink).

I VERY MUCH believe that some third-party material WILL be making it into
the 'kernel' next spring. Remember the accidental reissue of the psionics
chapter when they did the final SRD release? Those prestige classes from If
Thoughts Could Kill were in it instead of the ones from the PsiHB.

And the PsiHB3.5 comes out in the spring, so here's my $10 bet that we'll
see some third-party material in it.

it's still not being incorporated into "the kernel". not saying it
never will, but until WotC decides to take all that cool OGC floating
around out there and make the next version of D&D the latest,
cutting-edge game they can, using the very best ideas out there, D&D
itself isn't directly benefitting from open-source development.
Indirectly, sure, from the whole "network externalities" thing. But
not from the "many monkeys" thing.

and since WotC doesn't own Dragon any more, it's even less like
reworking the core stuff than it would've been had a WotC-owned
Dragon published unofficial game stuff.
