Greetings!

Recently I purchased a rebuilt short block for my 1959 Chevy 3200.

It is now all built up and ready to go in... looking very pretty and
clean enough to eat off..

My mechanic was about to install the engine today and could not
because the block did not have holes drilled in the right places for
the front motor mounts which are correct for the truck, on either
side of the cross-member. It looks as if the block is intended to
match up with a center mount, and my mechanic guessed that maybe the
block is a passenger car block.

Does this predicament sound familiar? Is there an adapter I can
purchase which will cradle the engine and allow the mechanic to
install this block? Or do I need to change the cross-member?

I can't bear the idea that I might just be OUT OF LUCK

Help!

Antonio,

Search the archives in the 'oletrucks' list for 'flex-a-lite'. I
don't know the part number right now cuz the work computer won't let
me look at the archives and the MMM (mean mommy monster) saw fit to
take all of my Pcup receipts when she hit the road. I put a water
pump adapter on my Burb to bring up the fan and still use the short
pump. Part # MEE390, page 89, $40.00 from Jim Carter.

I would advise not to notch the fan cuz it might fail, as in one of
the blades come off, and put a nice hole through your hood or
through your head. That would be a bummer in my book.

I have to bee nice to them Texans for one month cuz there was one
that sent me some Pcup parts. He is a transplant but still calls
himself a Texan, go figure. ;-) There is annutterun' looking for
54 GMC parts for me. I don't know if he is a native though.

Also another
problem that I have is that the fan rubs the crank pulley and it
would need
to be about 2 mm shorter to miss it.
I am sure this is a common problem faced by those making this

Re: [old-chevy-truck] Radiator installation help

2007-04-15 Thread JAL12147
Hi,

When I installed a '57 261 in my '51 3100 many years ago, I ran into the same
problem with the radiator and fan.

I had ordered a new (std, not desert cooler) radiator from either Harmon's or
Chevy Duty, can't remember which. Had the rad for about a year before I tried
to install it. It hit the short shaft water pump. I called, explained the
problem, and the guy new exactly what was wrong, had me ship the new one back
and shipped me one that dropped right in. I had left the old leaky one at the
radiator shop so I couldn't compare mounting points of the two. If I remember
correctly, the 1st radiator I purchased sat with the top tilted back toward the
water pump, now it sits perfectly vertical. I have a tad more than 1 of
clearance between the fan and radiator. Could there be two different styles of
radiator mounting flanges? I don't know.

For the fan, I purchased an 18 flex fan, laid it on the garage floor with a
sheet of 3/4 plywood on top of it, jumped on it a few times to flatten the
blades a bit. Works fine, clears the dampener.

Hope this helps,
John,

RE: [old-chevy-truck] Radiator installation help

2007-04-15 Thread Jones, Allen
I modified my fan to fit in. I carefully ground off each blade what was
needed (I even needed to grind more off because I put a 2 groove
harmonic balancer in my 261 and it definitely hit the fan). Then I
balanced the fan to make sure I wouldn't have any weird vibrations (I
saw a fan blade let go once and it made a nasty hole in the hood). Very
carefully examine your fan to make sure absolutely no stress cracks are
present at the rivet points.

As far as the fan hitting the shaft, you'd be surprised how untrue
your original support may be. Torturing the support to fit the sheet
metal and radiator will require automotive chiropractic work. I have a
hefty 3/16 clearance between my radiator and water pump. So I used the
best possible parts in that a part failure will result and one wasted
radiator.

Finally, you say new radiator. I've seen more new radiators not fit
than do fit. I can only guess the QC is not where it needs to be. I
always use original tanks and mounts and recore it to make sure it fits.
What I mean is don't assume your new radiator is an acceptable fitment.

Good luck.

installation help

Are this notches that I can put myself on the existing fan? I have access to
a machine model shop at work and I thinking I can cut an even 1/8 of an inch
  on each of the blades.

  Any issues by doing this?

  Thanks,

  Antonio

Subject: *Possible SPAM* [old-chevy-truck] Radiator installation help

  Dear fellow old iron lovers,

So here is my dilemma. I have a 53 Chevy truck that I have been building for
quite a few years now. Finally I am ready to get it on the road, but as I
try to install a new radiator it won't fit. Let me give you a bit of
  background:
I am using a 1957 car engine, I replaced the water pump with the short shaft
water pump, I have the original radiator support core, but as I try to slide
the radiator down, it rubs against the shaft of the water pump. Also another
problem that I have is that the fan rubs the crank pulley and it would need
to be about 2 mm shorter to miss it.
I am sure this is a common problem faced by those making this upgrade, how
do I go about doing this? I don't want to have to hack the radiator core
support, I have a spare core support (already hacked) but still I can't see
how I can get it to fit.
Do I mount the radiator on the core support before I install the core in the
truck or afterwards? Would this make a difference?

  Thanks for you help.

[old-chevy-truck] Engine mount difficulties

2007-04-15 Thread Jonas Thaler
Again I apologize for repeating myself!

I replaced the block on my 235 in my 59 3200 and now it is built up
and ready to install. My mechanic says that the new block is not
drilled the same way as the old block and he cannot use the same
mounting plate in the front. He thinks the new block is meant to
mount in the center,

According to the pictures I took before I removed the old engine
(before I got my new job and had to hire someone to finish the truck)
the old block mounts attached on either side just behind the timing
cover.

Is it possible that we got a block that is not compatible with the
cross member on my 59?

Anybody have a clue? I got one nice reply so far which made me want
to go back and re-examine the new block, which I will do next week.
But I am still hoping someone knows about these blocks and can clear
it up right away

Thanks again so much

[old-chevy-truck] Re: Engine mount difficulties

2007-04-15 Thread Jonas Thaler
Oh I forgot to reply! The new block is the weird one. The old one
had the mounts you described on the sides. I got it from Jim Carter
as a short block --- they have not replied yet. But your solution
sounds very do-able. If you ever come across that article, let me
know how to access it.

I enjoy your postings. Thanks for the help.

Interesting as every '59 I ever saw had the side front
engine mounts...

If it has the one single mount , use the one off the
old engine , you'll need to remove the oil pan to
acess the two inner bolts that screw in through the
front main from _inside_ the engine

There used to be a writup on how to convert the front
mount plate to external bolts .
