[old-chevy-truck] Re: Emblem for 57 3100 Hood
I see ~ I hadn't realized you were talking about the front emblem , I was thinking of the side hood emblems . If you go to car cruises and take along a pencil paper and ask everyone who has good chrome , you'll soon find not only a good chromer but more important , who _NOT_ to trust your old parts to . BTW : anyone who says they'll add ' extra chrome ' to cover pits , is a jerkoff , run away fast . ALL chroming (when correctly done) is the much vaunted triple plating ~ the first coat is brass to fill in pits and irregularities then they buff that and plate it with Nickle , this provides a good base for the third coat of ultra thin chromium ~ if it's not done this way , you can be sure the chrome will fade and rub off in a year or so no matter what the lying S.O.B. behind the counter tells you . Anyone who says they're going to put three coats of chrome on , is lying to you , take your parts and leave before they wreck them . Tom , just google The Stovebolt Engine Co and he should pop up , maybe there's a link to him in the home page's links section . -Nate Jim wrote: I called Paul's Chroming yesterday, they have a great reputation. Unfortunately, I think the cost is going to stop me from having this emblem restored ($400 to $500 I was like, WHAT?) I actually told the lady (older female) that is would be almost impossible for me to get funding authorization of $500 for an emblem for my daily driver. She laughed, and said that 80+% of the work they do is for show cars/trucks. After a brief chat, we agreed that this wasn't the solution for me. BTW: I told my fiancé about the discussion, and she was not thrilled with the cost either (i.e. I won't be having it down by Paul's). I've not giving up, but can't justify $400 for the front emblem. Do you have Tom's contact information? Be aware that pot metal parts require special care when plating and pitted ones even moreso . I don't think we have any decent plating outfits left in Callifornia due to both enviromentan regulations and thier insistance in only hiring unsklled , illegal immigrants for labor , I've had many peices ruined or lost (cute way of saying _STOLEN_) over the years . I know there are a few pot metal specialists out there , let us know the good or bad of how it turns out . If they ruin or ' loose ' your precious original emblems , don't panic ~ most large auto swaps have guys who sell old , pitted emblems fairly affordably . I see you're planning to loose interest in your old truck fairly soon , in 50 years it'll still be going strong Didja know ? Tom Langdon (IIRC) of The StoveBolt Engine Co. , sells neat little StoveBolt emblems you can add . -Nate Jim wrote: Nate, Thanks for the response. It is my personal belief NOT to buy cheap parts. Whatever I put on the truck I want to last for another 50 years. I made several calls and people keep referring me to Paul's Chrome Plating (paulschrome.com), he specializes in restoration of parts. [old-chevy-truck] Re: Alternator Upgrade - NO Adapter
You can buy a new alternator bracket from most old truck or car vendors (made in China , ick) or you can search until you find a 1962 235 as it came with a Delcotron 35 amp. alternator and those engines are worthless (not to ME of course) or , you can do like we did back on the farm and in early 60's : Remove the generator bracket and flip it 180 degrees , one hole will line up and the other one you simply drill out , not get a long bolt and some old water pipe and use that as a spacer to hold the alternator in correct alignment with the engine's pulleys . Me , I work in a large truck shop so I just grabbed a pocketful of flate washers and stacked 'em up as needed to shim the alternator into proper alignment . It's realy quite simple , just take yout time and work slowly , you'll see . The generator bracket on my 235 when I bought the truck , was all bent to heck and had _5_ holes drilled in it but I was able to hammer it back into proper shape and use it , they get bent from not enough shims being used . I posted all this in minute details some years ago when I did it , mybe you can search my old posts , should be under 235 alternator bracket or similar thing . -Nate Bob wrote: What is this Patrick's adaptor you mention. [old-chevy-truck] Radio restoration
Hello I have my radio from my 1950 Chevy truck that I need restored. Are there still dependable folks doing this? I'm on the West coast, so a reliable person or shop on the west coast would be my first choice, but I'll ship it to any respected individual or shop to get it repaired correctly. Re: [old-chevy-truck] Radio restoration
Hi Rod Personally, I wouldn't even attempt to try and restore one of those radios although you can buy most of the cosmetic parts from any of the vendors. I had 2 different radios restored by a guy in Oklahoma and he did a great job. The one for my '50 3100 looks and operates like new. This has been a few years ago so I don't know if he is still in the business. His contact information is below; DALE COSBY 4417 S .E. 23rd. DEL CITY, OK. Are there still dependable folks doing this? I'm on the West coast, so a reliable person or shop on the west coast would be my first choice, but I'll ship it to any respected individual or shop to get it repaired correctly. Has anyone restored their own radio? Is this something I can do with proper instructions? Any thoughts? Rod L Greenacres, WA. [old-chevy-truck] Re: Radio restoration
I think I'd have to go with the running opinion here, have it done professionally. I've been in electronics since I was 5, but due to the extreme rarity to find these radios and what they are worth, as well as mentioned the age factors of components, I would not chance it my own self. I've passed up opportunities to get the data and tube kits for them. (sometimes questioning if I should have, for being able to repair them after restoration if and when necessary). -Chris (still looking for radios, 5 trucks and 0 radios ;( ). --- In old-chevy-truck@yahoogroups.com, Kenneth Cluley [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi Rod Personally, I wouldn't even attempt to try and restore one of those radios although you can buy most of the cosmetic parts from any of the vendors.
