Re: [old-chevy-truck] Re: shake down cruise
Bill, The engine in the 86 vette is the original aluminum head small block 350 so 1986. Big differences between that vette and your truck include: tuned port injection instead of carburetion, 2.73 vs. 3.36 rear, and overdrive transmission vs Muncie, and the 48 may weigh as much as 1,000 lbs more than the vette. Not sure on how much the altitude would impact the mileage. What is your rpm at 55mph? I bet it's way over my 1600rpm. With the right setup, you should be able to break 20mpg in your truck, but the focus of this list is more stock vehicles. I've hypermiled it with all the tricks and including limiting speeds to no more than 55mph to 32mpg (boring...). At 55mph, it's only turning about 1600rpm...but loves it...doesn't lug. You're NOT going to get mpg like that running a stock carbureted vintage truck engine running through 3.90 gears. The Task Force trucks also weigh more. Count on about 1mpg loss for each 300lbs of additional weight. I intend to run my 58 Suburban with a small block V8 through a stock 3-speed and a Borg Warner OD. The OD drops the effective gear ratio down quite a bit...seems like it was to 2.73. Still have to see how that works out as the truck is in stalled restoration mode. [old-chevy-truck] 4.4L V6 350 SBC Swap ?
How difficult is this to do ? . A guy here @ work's old 1979 (?) 4.3 V6 is smoking badly , leaks oil and just failed SMOG testing , he says he wants to make it a V8 . A budget job of course , used 350 CID SBC engine from who knows where just yet . TIA , -Nate Ole Chevy and GMC trucks rule! Re: [old-chevy-truck] 4.4L V6 350 SBC Swap ?
Not difficult to do. Just have to check the position of mounts (engine and trans). Also have to make clearance for the fan (unless he put's in an electric fan) and if he is going fuel injection (fuel upgrade i.e pump and lines). Re: [old-chevy-truck] 4.4L V6 350 SBC Swap ?
Nate, Any V-8 up to the 454 can be mounted in to the '79. Looking up under 1979 Chevy truck specifications would provide the information including engine and transmission information. I think most trucks had the four bolt main. I would think having any engine gone through would be a good idea before finding any issues down the road.
