[old-chevy-truck] New to this site.

2012-02-08 Thread jmarks8491
I'm new to this site and am getting ready to begin work on an old GMC flatbed
truck that I found out in a neighbor's cow pasture. I believe it to be a 1/2
ton truck, but not sure. Since the ID plate is missing, I haven't been able to
accurately identify just what I have. It has vent windows in the doors, short
running boards, in-line six engine, with three on the tree shifter. I've found
an original flatbed for it and also an original GMC in-line six engine that
runs and has a 4-speed transmission attached. Everything is now just waiting
on me and my son to start turning wrenches. Just thought I would say, Hello,
and see if anyone knows where any stamped VIN numbers are on the frame, so I
can determine just what I have. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

Welcome Jerry. You will not have any vin number on the frame unless it is a
late thirties or early forties truck. A picture would tell alot. You have
to post them to the files pages associated with this yahoo group or you can
post a link to some photo hosting type of site like Web Shots or Photo
Bucket. On the GMC, there is a number behind the distributor that can help
identify the engine if it is still a GMC engine. Casting numbers will help
alot if you can locate those too. Have fun with it is the most important
goal, they can be over whelming at times. ask questions when you need to.
Someone will pipe up eventually and give it their best shot. Good luck!!

Welcome Jerry

You'll find the folks on this site are not only very knowledgeable but always
willing to help.  I went through about a three year restoration on my old chevy
and ask about a million questions!  But I couldn't have done it without these
guys.  The fact that this is a project with your son is even more exciting!
Please post some pics on the group photo link so we can see what you're working
with.  I will tell you that if you have vent windows it's probably post 1950.
You may also want to visit www.stovebolt.com.  Great site for tech tips,
photos, interesting articles, etc.  Good luck and good truckin'.
