[old-chevy-truck] Radio restoration

2008-08-10 Thread Rod LaFrance
Hello

I have my radio from my 1950 Chevy truck that I need restored. Are
there still dependable folks doing this? I'm on the West coast, so a
reliable person or shop on the west coast would be my first choice,
but I'll ship it to any respected individual or shop to get it
repaired correctly.

Has anyone restored their own radio? Is this something I can do with
proper instructions? Any thoughts?

I wouldn't try it yourself. Everything in there is crusty and brittle and
covered with dust. One option would be to put a plug under the dash that
would feed a modern radio or iPod thru the existing speaker. You might try
googling car radio repair. .bill

Hi Rod

Personally, I wouldn't even attempt to try and restore one of those radios
although you can buy most of the cosmetic parts from any of the vendors.  I had
2 different radios restored by a guy in Oklahoma and he did a great job.  The
one for my '50 3100 looks and operates like new.  This has been a few years ago
so I don't know if he is still in the business.  His contact information is

RE: [old-chevy-truck] Radio restoration

2008-08-11 Thread Jones, Allen
If you have some basic electronics skills, you can do it. I did my own and
then had it tuned by a professional with the proper equipment (it took them 15
minutes to adjust it). I would recommend carefully cleaning it, replacing all
the tubes (not that expensive), replacing the vibrator with a solid state one
(expensive), replacing all the paper capacitors with modern ones (inexpensive
but tedious), and repainting the needle the original bright red. The only way
the paper capacitors will have survived all these years is if the radio was
kept inside. My radio's on/off switch was kind of worn (but still worked) --
these switches are super scarce and used ones are a moderate fortune. So I
wired a hidden on/off switch under the dash and I just leave the radio switch
on to keep from finally breaking it. I have spare radios but can't bring
myself to taking the switch out and rendering one useless. Of course if you
are running 12V, get the dropping resistor and mount it away from anything and
everything - they get HOT and will melt anything they touch. Dummy me plugged
my antenna hole when I did my restoration so I use a modern hidden antenna
under the running board. It works pretty good, but probably not as good as the
original. Get your self the original Delco manual on repair of the unit as
well as installation. The power tap is off the + of the amp gauge.

Good luck - working on these radios is fun!

That's a perfectly good way to ruin a classic radio. If you do it, send me the
old radio guts so I can keep stock radios on the road, just like our trucks.
