[old-chevy-truck] Wiring Help

2011-07-26 Thread Green, Steven D.

I bought a partially finished 3/4ton with a new wiring harness that is partly
hooked up. Trouble is I got NO instructions with the truck and cant find any
directions in the boxes of parts that came with it. The guy who sold it to me
is not the same guy who bought the harness and did the work.

There is enough of it hooked up to start the engine and operate the charging
system but I have lots of extra wires hanging down from the dash-maybe turn
signals or may they are the tail lights. Not sure where the dome light and gas
gauge wires are. The hanging wires are labeled with numbers-- in the
30's--like 31, 32, 33, etc.

The folks at Classic Parts were nice enough to send me instruction for their
wiring kit but it does not match.

Does anyone have instructions for another brand of wiring kit to share that
might accidentally match what I have?

Thanks,

Steve

RE: [old-chevy-truck] Wiring Help

2011-07-26 Thread Cale Seavers

Steve,
I did a wiring harness not too long ago and here are my thoughts, but I'm
lowest on the experience totem pole so others may disagree...
If you are unsuccessful at finding an install sheet with matching numbers let
us know what works on the dash and what doesn't. I was really surprised with
how few circuits were behind the dash. Fuel gauge and ammeter are electrical,
all others are mechanical, other than that it's just dash lights, hi beam
indicator, ignition wiring (which already works in your case) and hook ups for
the headlight switch. The remaining bundle of wires is for hook up of a
steering column mounted aftermarket turn signal. The wire for the dome light
connects to the headlight switch (if I remember correctly). If most everything
on the dash works then I'd be willing to bet the extra wires are for the turn
signals. Also, if your harness is pre-wired for either with or without turn
signals then you will have un connected wires no matter what you do. I made
the mistake of thinking all wires had to be connected to be considered
"finished" but you will have unused wires depending on your decisions for turn
signals. Finally, I thought my CP harness came with a separate sheet of
instructions on how to install turn signals and included numbers in the mid
30's, don't quote me on this, I will check when I get home. Hope that helps.

In the files section of the group page there is a wiring diagram for a 1950
Chevy truck.  If you still have the numbers on both ends of the wires you
should be able to print the wiring diagram and follow the numbers to hook up
the rest of your stuff.

Steve,
Looks like those might be turn signals from a classic parts harness, I found my
old wiring instructions and they indicate wires 31, 32, 33, 34 and 35 are for
the turn signals. If you can find a copy online that might be your best bet,
I'd be glad to scan a copy of mine and email it to you...no extra charge for
the greasy fingerprints. Hope that helps.
