Some where you can find a short shaft water pump, and pulley system. I haven't
done any thing like this but I have read up on it. Check out the parts houses,
give them a call.

Mike 50 3100

I am working on final preparations for putting the cab back on my fully
restored frame and am installing the radiator bracket. There is no choice where
the bracket goes (give or take) so with a 261 engine on the frame, you cant put
the radiator back where it was originally on the outside back of the bracket.
Ive seen hundreds of these trucks butchered up to make a 235 or 261 fit but
with this truck being pristine, I cant just get out a pair of tin snips. So, I
am installing the radiator INSIDE the bracket and just up against the front
inside. I am welding a special track onto the inside of the bracket so the
radiator easily slides in and out. Please stop me if you know of a more elegant
way. Once I have done this, I will have to do some special sheet metal cutting
to the hood latch assembly pan and the lower pan but thats no big deal. Anyhow,
I would love to hear how anyone else accomplished this before I start hacking
away.

Also, the fan is now about 2-2-1/2 inches away from the radiator. (Rather large
gap). Is that a cooling system problem waiting to happen?

Thanks everyone! I know there is a short shaft water pump, but even with that
already on, the radiator has to be moved forward!?

RE: [old-chevy-truck] Little Help!

2012-11-29 Thread Deve Krehbiel
So Allen straightened me out on the proper way to keep the radiator in the
stock position when installing a 235/261. Simple short shaft water pump is the
answer but not ALL the answer. To maintain just a little better clearance, use
a 'flat back' fan. They are stock on the 216. Jim Carter mentions this in the
blurb on his site. Now I have all the clearance I need. So why are most of the
trucks I see around Kansas all hacked up and the radiator is shoved inside the
bracket with all the supports removed? Oh well.

Greetings! Background: In 1973 I bought a '51 Chev 1/2 ton for
$127.13 at a sealed-bid auction from the University of Colorado's
Buildings and Grounds Dept (They had bought it years earlier from the
original owner, the US Air Force--yup, faded Air Force blue paint.) A
year later it moved me to Wisconsin where I've lived since. In '79
what started out as a clutch replacement turned into a total
restoration project--a phenomenon I've always called either The
Snowball Effect or ...while I'm here... Ha!

Ok--the project stalled years ago. I have a lot done--like the frame
sandblasted and painted, most of the parts I need, etc. What I don't
have now is that right combination of time and money to resume the
project.

Also in 1979 I got to a parts show just as they were closing up. I ran
into 2 guys who were throwing a bunch of parts they hadn't sold into a
truck. Apparently they worked for a small rural (GM or Chev?)
dealership whose insurance company had told them to clean out their
attic. I quickly saw a lot of parts that I knew would fit my truck.
To make a long story short I scored as many parts as I could fit in my
ride. Most of the parts are engine parts: connecting rods, intake and
exhaust valves, bearings, rocker arms. A lot were and are still NOS in
original boxes.

My problem is that I am not certain what engines/vehicles they are
for. I can pretty much tell the ones that go with my truck (216). But
there are a lot of others too. I can read part numbers on the part
itself and often on the boxes. For example, does anyone know what this
connecting rod goes to: GM Box, 837684 GM 848 is on the rod itself,
and package says Group No. 0.603 Part No. 601343. I've got 2 of them.
As for valves--I probably have about 150 from a variety of manufacturers
like GM, Sealed Power, Rich, Toledo, McQuay-Norris, etc.

Can anyone help with catalog parts numbers referencing?

Thanks for letting me ramble.

RE: [old-chevy-truck] Little help with parts identification???

2006-02-28 Thread Jeff Pohlar
I looked up your rod casting number but came up with zilch. Are you sure of
that number on the rod?

I may be able to help with the aftermarket valves. It would be easiest for
me if you were to send me a handfull of part numbers and I'll see if I can
match any.
