Yes, but not a guarantee that the plug is firing properly or at the right time, just that electricity is getting at least part way through the plug wire. -Original Message- From: old-chevy-truck@yahoogroups.com [mailto:old-chevy-truck@yahoogroups.com] On Behalf Of Jonas Thaler Sent: Saturday, July 06, 2013 1:51 PM To: old-chevy-truck@yahoogroups.com Subject: Re: [old-chevy-truck] Re: Re : 216/235 & 261 Ignition Timing Would you then move the timing light to the other five spark plugs to make sure they were all firing? Re: [old-chevy-truck] Re: Re : 216/235 & 261 Ignition Timing
Hello Dazysnow and Ole Truckers, When I began working on my vehicle's engine (mainly because I wanted to get somewhere and the vehicle didn't take my point of view on the matter) my troubleshooting sequence was usually based on what tool I had handy and what I thought I could do with it. Hammer in hand: start tapping on things. My success ratio was low. I discovered "Glenn's Auto Troubleshooting Guide". My copy was printed in 1969. It's hundred or so pages cover emergencies, hard starting, oil consumption, noises, overheating, fuel, electrical, ignition, drive train, brakes, steering, and so on. It is not as good as having Nate and Bill and Deve and a thousand of you other experienced folks helping out, but it has saved both my butt and a lot of time. I have a copy in the glove box and another on the work bench. I see used copies on www resale places for three to seven bucks. (I have no idea who Glenn is and have no connection to or interest in his business.) Regards, and Hope this helps get the truck on the road or back on the road. Culver Adams Minneapolis, MN 1951 Chevy 3100 formerly 216 L6, currently 235 L6. (As 216 got weary and 235 came back to life, I put a lot of ware and tear on Glenn's Guide.) 1961 GMC K1500 formerly 305 V6, currently 478 V6. --- -Original Message- From: dazysnow To: old-chevy-truck Sent: Sat, Jul 6, 2013 11:41 am Subject: [old-chevy-truck] Re: Re : 216/235 & 261 Ignition Timing The engine has to start before you can fine tune unfortunately. RE: [old-chevy-truck] Re: Re : 216/235 & 261 Ignition Timing
The new tune-up procedure Nate did would help. Its in my how-to section. What I always do is turn on the ignition, open the distributor cap and with a small screwdriver, rock the points a little. If you get spark there, chances are its not an electrical issue. Then, once I see some sparking there, I take some starting fluid, remove the air cleaner, and squirt a little down the throat of the carb. Making sure its fully choked after the squirt but not before, I try to start it. If it takes off for a very short second, clean your fuel filter and grind the starter long enough to get gas from the tank to the carb. If it doesnt start, remove the gas line at the carb, run the starter to see if you get gas spurting out. If you have nice gas flow, the carb is probably in need of a kit. Thats easy. If there is no spurting, the fuel pump is bad. That happens alot because the diaphram is made of rubber and it just gets all crusty and stops doing its job. Dont let anyone else do it. You will be so proud of yourself when you figure it out, you will want to drive it all the time. Would you then move the timing light to the other five spark plugs to make sure they were all firing? Great tip. On Jul 6, 2013, at 11:39 AM, "Bill Hanlon" wrote: > Do you have a timing light? Do you have a timing light? If so, hook it up and point it at the windshield. Turn on the key and hit the starter. If the light flashes the plugs (at least the one that you hooked the timing light to) are getting fire.
