[OpenIndiana-discuss] Zpool upgrade didn't seem to upgrade

2011-01-19 Thread Michelle Knight
hi Folks,

OI 148.

Three 1.5tb drives were replaced with three 2tb drives. They are here on
internal SATA channels c2t2d0, c2t3d0 and c2t4d0. One is a Seagate Barracuda
and the other two are Western Digital Greens.

A zpool export and subsequent import, which should have taken the set to 4tb
overall storage in the raidz, appears to have not worked despite the import
taking what must have been about ten to fifteen minutes to do the import.
(during which time the drives were silent and the zpool process was mostly 0%
very occasionally peaking to 25%, and the system being very slow to respond
during that period)

Any ideas please? Or is there still some process running in the background
that I can't see?

I guess the point is not the education side, but the certification in
your wall.

BTW, a good training week would take far longer with self-teaching.

Re: [OpenIndiana-discuss] Amazon AMI

2011-01-19 Thread Gary
Someone will need to work with Amazon on this since it's not just as simple
as creating a disk image for a desktop or hypervisor virtualization product.
You'll need to work with Amazon because they'll have to make your kernel
available for use in an AMI -- unless it's possible (if even desirable) to
use some of the old OpenSolaris kernels that are already available.

Oh my goodness. No.
When you run format -e, it should just display a list of all the disks in
the system (instantly), and ask you which one you want to work on, and then
you quit. I'm sure I said that. Quit without changing anything. (And be
careful not to break anything.) I am extremely certain I never told you to
type "format" after you got into the format prompt. And when it prompted
you "Continue?" You should definitely have said "n" instead of "y"

You have entered the format prompt, and then entered the format command on
the format prompt, which apparently does something horrific. Hopefully
you're doing it to a disk you don't care about.

I suggest rebooting first, just to ensure you haven't destroyed your system.
You may have destroyed it.

Here is an example:
[root@FILER ~]# format -e
Searching for disks...done

AVAILABLE DISK SELECTIONS:
   0. c0d0
  /pci@0,0/pci15ad,7a0@15/pci-ide@0/ide@0/cmdk@0,0
   1. c2t0d0
  /pci@0,0/pci15ad,1976@10/sd@0,0
   2. c2t1d0
  /pci@0,0/pci15ad,1976@10/sd@1,0
   3. c2t2d0
  /pci@0,0/pci15ad,1976@10/sd@2,0
Specify disk (enter its number): ^C

I'm sure I said this too. Don't bother formatting any disks. Just use
zpool add. End of story. It will use the whole device, and it's an instant
operation.

> 4/ What is the different betwen zpool attach zpool and zpool add

Zpool attach will create a mirror of a device which was not previously
mirrored.
Zpool add will add storage to a pool. If you add a single device, then it's
not redundant. If you add a mirror or a raidz, then it's redundant.

Re: [OpenIndiana-discuss] Amazon AMI

2011-01-19 Thread Deano
The existing OpenSolaris JeOS work was partly motivated for such uses, we
are looking at getting a similar minimal configuration working for OI. It
should be fairly simple to go from that to a nice small virtual image in the
main cloud formats (just as JeOS did).
Given some of the benefits that the illumos kernel comes with in regards
storage and networking, I suspect it will make a very nice base cloud
compute image.

Hello,

Are there any plans for creating an Amazon AMI to use on Amazon's cloud?
This would lower the entry barrier for a lot of potential users.

Perhaps a VMware image and/or OVF template would also be of help to make the
project more popular.

The M5025 is a RAID controller, the LSI 9200-8E is a SAS HBA.

I suspect you probably had some hardware raid volume setup on the IBM
controller perhaps?

The long names (WWNs) are quite normal if using SAS or FC.

Do you have MPxIO enabled?

Under LSI 9200-8E, by default, it enable MPxIO.

With MPxIO enabled , the device will be like that based on WWN of the disk

Hi Edward

Thank you for your help

As I haven't received the response, I run the formart -e
It said it needs around 3 hours

format> format
Ready to format. Formatting cannot be interrupted
and takes 232 minutes (estimated). Continue?
Continue? y

Now, I have questions

1/ Why it needs long time (232 minutes) to format 10G?

2/ Can I stop it? Crtl C?

3/ For the normal procedure, I don't need to format the drive before using
zpool add rpool newdevice

4/ What is the different betwen zpool attach zpool and zpool add zpool

Thank you again

It can be any size you want.

Run:

Run:

and hopefully you'll immediately recognize the name of the new disk.

Re: [OpenIndiana-discuss] sun people that has left oracle after acquisition

2011-01-19 Thread Gabriel de la Cruz
Official training is important for both development and certifying
your knowledge. Sun courses were good, and their exams very well made,
it would be very difficult that anyone without a good knowledge about
the subject gets certified. I know some people for example who is very
good administering Solaris, but there are always many things escaping
their knowledge, that kind of training provides that, a complete in
depth approach, and you are force to learn it all.
This is not about a knowledge base, or technical manuals, the
information is structured in a pedagogical manner, it is not only
about mastering the use of aplications but gives an overview of the
fundaments behind those, going across many many different technologies
and putting them in context.

This will require someone to prepare lots of pedagocical material,
classes, lessons, but do it with a very clear structure... and
ofcourse before anything else, OI architecture should be clearly
defined.

Sun courses were expensive, but some times just the acess to the
materials was worth the money... Oracle makes it all an investment...
No go for it unless you wanna be certified.

If people is interested in something like this, it would mean a hudge
job, but probably the subject would be as interesting as offering a
support plan.

Do we have teachers / writers on the list?

Anyway first things comes first, and going stable will help defining
what OI really is.

Cheers!

actually, there were (are?) several such tools written by various

Sort of. OI wouldn't let go of the backup pool definition, so I took the
drive, put it on an Ubuntu installation and used Fuze ZFS to put another pool
on it. That got rid of the previous pool definition, and then I could mount
the new pool and thus destroy it.

I couldn't destroy the old backup pool becuase it wouldn't mount.

I did try a new label, re-doing the partitions, none of it worked.

I started a secure erase of the drive, but that was going to take too long. I
guess that the definition is kept at the end of the drive itself.

[OpenIndiana-discuss] Sun Exlorer Replacement

2011-01-19 Thread Bernd Helber
Hello fellow Readers.

I'm not sure if you're all aware of the Sun Explorer Tool.

It was a huge Shell Script used by Sun Support provided to Customers

The package itself was/is called SUNWexplo.

To provide proper Support for Open Indiana /Illumos , i would recommend
that we should use something comparable.

In case of searching for issues and problems in general it makes Life a
lot easier, especially if you look for bugs/misconfigurations (call it
what you wan) on the system. ;)

Sun itself had also a parser which checked, the Customers Explorer
Files and compared the outputs with patchlist/xrefs.

It was wonderfull to compare the systems issues and the patchlevel.

If Illumos/OpenIndiana and other Derivats would provide proper Support,
those kind of Infrastructure would be necessary.

Cheers.

Yes People want to get trained by certified trainers, its necessary
especially if you have to run a production environment. In most cases
those trainers were very well experienced in the different products.

>From my experience you could lern faster, if you get educated by trainers.
The training Sun provided to customers was a got investment, they had
labs with dedicated machines you could play with. They also provided
Documentation for the courses.

Online ressources like docs.sun.com, blogs.sun.com or third party Blogs
and Pages are great and absolutely useful, but you could share
experience with other guys in the classroom too.

Especially training in Stuff like Sunstoragetek Backup (Legato
Networker) or Sun Cluster was very helpful.

It defintely makes sense.

just my 2 cents

Cheers. ;)

Fortunately there is an open source fork of OHAC called IHAC:

A beast from a Solaris customer perspective. Training costs shot up 50% for
us. Licence costs and terms also didn't impress.

This long standing Sun customer will likely be evaluating RHEL on HP with
virtualisation instead of Zones for the next server choice.

That is a few years away yet, so we'll see what Oracle do. But I have to
admit, it isn't looking pretty.

As an outsider I keep wondering if Oracle is a beast or a beauty. .

Re: [OpenIndiana-discuss] zpool and nfs

2011-01-19 Thread William David OpenIndiana
Good morning
How you share a nfs on oi server ?? How command you use

zfs set sharenfs="root=@192.168.0.5" pool/share

For not wait a dns resolve on nfs connection And mapping as root privileges
this share

Or a zfs set sharenfs="someuser=@192.168.0.5" pool/share

For map a specific user a share. In thus case how a uid of owner of the oi side
zfs and a privileges on a folder

ls -l pool/
dwrxwrxw-x+ someone somegroup share
This is only a example but in both side a uid is the same

someone = 1000
somegroup = 1000

At last how version of nfs you try using nfs v3 or nfsv4 ?
