[OpenIndiana-discuss] NoMachine or X2Go on Openindiana?

2017-11-16 Thread Lonnie Cumberland
Greetings all,

I have been researching a lot of information lately towards trying to
locate if a NoMachine NX or X2Go client can run on Openindiana, but have
have not had any luck in located either any documentation or packages that
might be installed.

Does anyone have any experience in this area that might be able to advise
me?

Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks and have a great day,
Lonnie

2017-11-16 Thread Jonathan Adams
It was a fair number of years ago, and I only did it as a project to see if
it would work, but I got "NoMachine" working on Solaris 10 and on an early
OpenIndiana, using the freeNX code, that I can't seem to find online any
more.

I even managed to compile the NX client for it using another project and
the shared NX library.

It took quite a lot of work to get it going, but it did work okay once it
was compiled.

2017-11-16 Thread Lonnie Cumberland
Hi Jon,

Thanks for getting back to on this question.

I'll try to dig in a bit more to see how best to proceed forward since I
need an NX-based client to be able to run on the Illumos based OS like
Openindiana and the best ones that I have come across seem to be actually
NoMachine NX or possibly X2GO which both seem to be the most advanced and
have much less latency than VNC and even RDP (via XRDP perhaps) from what I
have found so far.

Thanks again,
Lonnie

Re: [OpenIndiana-discuss] NoMachine or X2Go on Openindiana?

2017-11-16 Thread Jonathan Adams
from all of my prior research, RDP is the best protocol, but most
implementations on Linux/Unix suck big time. If you're looking for a pay
for product, you might be better off looking at a full blown Windows
Server, or a Cisco product.

I just wish that Sun had released the code for the SunRay software, as they
had apps that would allow you to connect into your session over several
devices. We still use SunRays extensively in our laboratories, but we
bought up a large quantity of kit when Oracle abandoned the project.

the FreeNX is a NoMachine version 3 equivalent. but IIRC the latest
NoMachine client talks to the version 3 server happily.

Re: [OpenIndiana-discuss] NoMachine or X2Go on Openindiana?

2017-11-16 Thread Lonnie Cumberland
Yea, I think that I remember working a little bit with the SunRay stuff
some years ago and did not know that folks were still using them.

I've used RDP on Windows and Linux (via xRDP) for a long time. You are
right in that the Linux/Unix implementations leave a lot to be desired, but
for this project I am leaning towards NoMachine NX or X2GO, at least
initially and will see where this takes us as I need a generic support for
multiple OS's that also supports application seamless windows as well as
audio, file xfer, filesystem sharing, and a few other things for which
these 2 seem to be the most advanced in this way and still cover most of
the requirements. The current catch is that I may have to do a significant
amount of work to get one of them to run on Openindiana (Illumos-based) to
talk to the VM's

BTW, I really like the "Sheldon Cooper" pic. It's a great show that I can
relate in that my day job is as a Physicist.

Thanks again,
Lonnie

[OpenIndiana-discuss] wifi card compatibility

2017-11-16 Thread Marc Lobelle

Hello,

I have a notebook that included an apparently unsupported SIERRA
wireless card. So I bought on ebay an Intel 4965 AGN card, which is in
the list of the compatible devices. However, both windows and openiniana
seem to identify it as an ATHEROS AR9287. Is it possible to have an
intel card with an atheros chipset ? Or does it mean that the label oh
the board is fake.
Any way, is this card usable with open indiana ? If yes with wich driver
? and what should I do to install this driver. Thanks

The arn driver seems to support AR9285 which is supported by the same ath
driver as AR9287 in FreeBSD.
Nonetheless the corresponding PCI id is not listed in illumos, so it will
not attach.

Can't speak for others, but the SunRay is/was always a great product.

I'm still using SunRay's in my home.

Hi Marc

Atheros AR9k series cards are unfortunately not supported yet in
OpenIndiana/Illumos Atheros up until and including 8k is supported by
default and by freenicdrivers.

Atheros drivers are available in Freebsd and Linux but the driver has
not been ported/updated yet.

Also See: https://www.illumos.org/issues/8694

Thanks Aurélien. is there a workaround this (without recompiling illumos)

[OpenIndiana-discuss] Sysem repository is now working on OpenIndiana

2017-11-16 Thread Alexander Pyhalov

Hello, guys.

Now you can use Solaris-style system repository service, so that pkg in
ipkg-branded zone speaks to outside word via global zone.
Documentation was updated:
http://docs.openindiana.org/handbook/systems-administration/#zones (look
at "System repository configuration").

This setting can become default in the next OpenIndiana snapshot.

You'll have to update pkg:/package/pkg and related packages to
0.5.11,5.11-2017.0.0.5229 versions for such configurations to work
correctly.

Please, test and report any issues.
