2016-09-08 Thread Мартин Бохниг via openindiana-discuss
Not everybody is in a position where he needs to watch such "sites".
News: And if you want to watch real news, covering real events rather than
fairy tales, and even in not such a biased distorted manner as the BBC war
propaganda machine you mentioned, you still need flash.

Flash is also still needed for learning wonderful languages, such as in my case
Russian for commercial study software I bought and use.
The example you provided is describing a scenario where some high-security-area
admin doesn't even know how to recompile Firefox with plugins disabled for the
user dir ~/.mozilla/plugins folder.

To some it up: Much hot air with no substance.
Other than that you throw all who are speaking out for flash into some XXX
corner.

And once again:

> A server OS is probably more likely to be a sensible place to have flash

Solaris is a *general* purpose OS.
While Illumos is not an OS but a kernel with system libs, as they define it
themselves.
There is no mention of it being a "Server OS", neither on illumos.org nor on
wikipedia:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Illumos

One of the most prominent places where I need flash is my.mail.ru, when
uploading content to a social media platform when communicating with my friends
.
And those users that you described can still watch porn on their smartphone,
even if working in your "secure environment" where the "lack of a feature" gets
praised as "feature" (somehow this reminds me of July/August).

So - wtf?

best regards,

Re: [OpenIndiana-discuss] Σχετ: FlashPlayer 23 NPAPI for Linux comeback

2016-09-08 Thread Jonathan Adams
As it happens, I was using OI on my laptop up until the point that I could
no longer run it (Intel Graphics, too many applications running Flash),
until my dual boot Linux trashed both itself and the ZFS file system on the
OI partition ... And I had commented on the system that it made a good
solid reliable desktop. (if more laptops had twin disks for ZFS root I'd be
recommending it to a lot more people)

The "Ha Ha" was in fact with you not at you, as I realised that the comment
was most likely aimed at a certain GDA.

I moved on from that laptop to a Dell XPS (that had trouble running windows
10, with it's networking!) which won't take OI, and has Ubuntu 16.04 on it,
but I still have the old Intel laptop around, and I am planning on creating
a USB/ISO of your latest test system to see if your changes work on it,
with feedback, but was so very impressed by the sarcastic comment that I
had to acknowledge it :)

Just my 2cents in case anyone was confused by my response.

A server OS is probably more likely to be a sensible place to have flash,
as it
may be properly secured, and may be configured to limit you to accessing
only
the business-critical sites you need to get the job done rather than
leaving you
open to the whole unsavoury internet. Not having flash is, in most cases, a
feature not a bug, and has been for a very long time.

One of the longer-standing irritations I've had with losing flash is that
the BBC
relied on it. Now at least they've moved iPlayer to HTML5 so that works
fine in
Firefox on illumos without flash.

Comrade Jim,

there is no way that he missed that, because I had included him all the time
into all OFFlist emails from back then (like most others here).
While he unlike you and unlike alp and very few others never attempted to
defend truth and justice and while he at the time apparently lost his ability
to write emails (except for 1 or 2 which weren't helpful), he now seems to not
only find it all so damn hahahahaha-"funny", but even learned how to write plus
additionally saw a necessity to post this single comment to list.

So much for that topic, just for the records.
