Do you find that your duplex printed pages are off? On my b147
system, the front page
is shifted down, while the back page is shifted up. Sometimes this
cuts off text
text because the margins are not being positioned properly.

PostScript (or sometimes PCL, but rarely) is preferred for most

filter with some extra descriptive information. CUPS (and the legacy
Solaris print system if you use the Presto GUI) is point-and-click for
selecting the right one.

Actually, CUPS+PCL6 produces slightly more predictable colour images
than postscript, for the CM1312

Scanning and fax are NOT supported in OI, as far as I can see!
I would like to be proven wrong: but xscanimage and xsane just crash.
It's not duplex, but I think there's a version for that at another 1-200
dollars.

There's a bug affecting libusb applications that's probably causing
that crash. Any scanner supported by SANE should work. Faxing from
printers tends to need proprietary software. You can use a plain fax
modem, though.

I wish this printer had that neat Xerox capability of emailing a scanned
image (in pdf, at least) to any email address...

That would beat fax hands down.

Xsane apps: would they be able to handle a network printer. i e one with
NO possiblility of connecting via usb?

Fax is of no interest, but the scanning facility is - otherwise we
wouldn't be looking at multifunction printers.

Buried deep in the Samsung "Unified Linux driver" for the CLX-6220FX I
mentioned originally, there are 2 folders named CUPS and SANE, but I see
no sign of a ppd file and it comes with a (Linux) install script so I'm
not clear what OI would make of it. Your final question is the same as
mine - are there any such printers supported ?

I have located 2 possible models:

Samsung CLX-6220FX

No experience here.

Manufacturer mentions a "Unified driver for Linux"

Brother DCP-9055CDN

Experience with a few Brother models. Presently an MFC-8860DN and
HL-1650N. A few others at various client sites that I forget the model

In my experience the key, at least w.r.t. the printing side is to get a
Postscript printer. HP invented their competing printer control
language because they didn't want to have to pay Adobe royalties where
more of the processing is done client side and requires client side
drivers. With Postscript printers most (all?) processing is done by the
printer engine. Hence, as long as you have a postscript printer
definition file (ppd) you're good to go. Otherwise you end up with
reverse engineered foomatic and may end up with a lag between release
and CUPS support.

manufacturer mentions CUPS driver download.

Now that CUPS is become defacto *nix standard, it's good to see some
manufacturers supporting it out of the gate. But I'd still opt for a
Postscript, or Brother's functionally equivalent "BR Script" printer -
they'll run forever w/o any need for driver updates.

AFAIK, CUPS is not going to get your scanner or fax working though. For
scanner you need SANE and I've minimal experience there. I think HPLIP
gives SANE an interface to HP scanners but haven't a clue as to which
models are currently supported.

Any other suggestions v. welcome - or even report that the above do NOT
work, or that there is no such thing would be very useful.

Were I you, I'd also be looking at Lexmark.

Thanks very much for the info. The Samsung "Unified driver for Linux"
package has buried deep in it two folders named "CUPS" and "SANE", so
fingers crossed it might work with OI148 (it does indeed have CUPS
management via localhost:631). On the other hand looking at those
folders there's no apparent reference to any .ppd file. So I'm a bit
confused as to what is being offered. Bizarrely Samsung.co.uk Support
doesn't have an email contact though I could write them a letter (!) or
telephone (chances of speaking to someone familiar with the Solaris 11
family at the end of the phone probably about 0). I'll keep digging and
report back any success.

check OI-147 on VirtualBox with the LiveCD install.

The Brother DCP-9055CDN is not listed in the CUPS Add Printer dialog,
but you have an option to add the PPD file ("CUPS driver") for it.
Likewise, the Samsung printer isn't list, but you said you can get the
PPD file from Samsung. You might check that the Linux driver is the
PPD file.

My recent printer is an HP OfficeJet Pro 8500 all-in-one, and it
prints simplex and duplex. I haven't done any host-initiated scanning
(don't know if it is possible.) The OS's I've used with it are
OpenSolaris 2009.06, snv_134, and Oracle Solaris 11 Express, and I had
to find and then add the PPD file for it.

Configure CUPS with http://localhost:631 in a web browser. There are
comprehensive help pages there, too.

manufacturers supporting it out of the gate.

Were I you, I'd also be looking at Lexmark.

Hello Guy,
My experience recently has been with Canon and Epson. Both
companies claim to be opensource-friendly, but Canon's openness
only extends as far as giving you pre-compiled linux binary
blobs for its actual raster engine.

Epson, on the other hand, provides proper buildable source for
their consumer-grade inkjets (I've got the Stylus Photo TX810fw)
and it works very nicely indeed. The only quibble I've got is
that I still need to hack on the ppd so it'll do duplexing for
me. But that's not a high priority at the moment.

Epson's drivers are available via http://avasys.jp/eng/linux_driver,
and they do have a section for lasers.

Once you've got their bits installed, it's very easy to tell
CUPS about them, and away you go.

Re: [OpenIndiana-discuss] Multifunction colour laser printer for OSOL, OI ?

2011-02-15 Thread Bruce Hoiem
OSol, including Oracle Solaris 11 Express, and OI-147 all have the CUPS
printing system, so all you need is the ppd file for the printer you
choose. I haven't checked OI-148, but suspect it keeps CUPS. I did check
OI-147 on VirtualBox with the LiveCD install.

The Brother DCP-9055CDN is not listed in the CUPS Add Printer dialog,
but you have an option to add the PPD file ("CUPS driver") for it.
Likewise, the Samsung printer isn't list, but you said you can get the
PPD file from Samsung. You might check that the Linux driver is the PPD
file.

My recent printer is an HP OfficeJet Pro 8500 all-in-one, and it prints
simplex and duplex. I haven't done any host-initiated scanning (don't
know if it is possible.) The OS's I've used with it are OpenSolaris
2009.06, snv_134, and Oracle Solaris 11 Express, and I had to find and
then add the PPD file for it.

Configure CUPS with http://localhost:631 in a web browser. There are
comprehensive help pages there, too.

Bruce
