[osol-discuss] print env vars of another process

2009-07-08 Thread Ralf
Is there any way to print the list of environment variables of a running
process ?
In linux i could use ps -ueww or cat /proc//environ, is there a similar
feature in opensolaris ?

This is incorrect syntax ;-)

The old historic UNIX ps that prints environment vars does not use '-' to
start options.

Sinply use:

ps aeww

This would not be worth the effort to port the ATI DRM at this time. The Xorg
ATI 3D driver is not really reliable in doing any high-level rendering and
still a major work in progress. This might become more
promising if we were to port over ATI's Catalyst driver project.

I expect this to change by Nov 2009 - but the workaround is to use Nvidia-based
cards for any 3D rendering/OpenGL work for now. You can get decent Nvidia
Quadro FX and GeForce FX 8xxx-based cards for about $35-50 USD.

Re: [osol-discuss] regretting for OS... (was ATI Radeon 1650 DRI)

2009-07-08 Thread Alexander
Thank you all for replies...

Nothing personal, but let's review my expreience with OpenSolaris as desktop
system.

1) There were no support for extended partitions in OSOL 2009.06. It's a big
disadvantage, cause I have a lot of data on NTFS-formatted logical drive on
extended partition. No matter, I've said, there will be snv build 119 and
everything will be ok.
2) There are not enough gstreamer plugins (all suggestions are to BUY fluendo
codecs). Why should I do it, if there is gstreamer-plugins-ugly? I can compile
it... Yes, but after compilation totem dies trying to play WMA files But I
still can try to compile mplayer. Yes, but it fails to compile with strange
errors about asm files...
3) I'd like to use MY graphic card, I've already bought it for about 70-100$
and it is not a small amount money for me... Maybe I should wait for
OpenSolaris 10.02 of course
4) It's said on winehq site that Wine support with sound is available starting
from snv_116, but 09.06 is snv_111b-based... When I'm trying to update to
snv_117, ips tries to download approximately 330 Mb... Not very good. But I
need to update to snv_119 to see my partition, and it's not ready. And there
were strange issues with transfering files (some network timeouts, happening
only with pkg.opensolaris.org)...

And last... It is possible to run Oracle 10g R2 on Solaris/x64. It could work
on OpenSolaris with some tricks... But there is Oracle 11g already. And it is
supported on Linux without so many hacks.

So, at the end we have the following disadvantages of running OpenSolaris as
desktop system
1) insufficient of drivers;
2) insufficient of codecs;
3) insufficient of 3-rd party software support...

No, seriously. I really like OpenSolaris (I support two SR servers, running on
it).
Zones, ZFS, DTrace are perfect tools for server systems.

But in my mind for desktop OpenSolaris is not enough. Everything is going to
work (if you pay money or wait for next releases or work for at least several
days on this problem...). Maybe when OSOL 2010.02 comes out, I'll give it a
chance... But now as a desktop OS Ubuntu rocks... It just works. Without any
tambourine dances.

I would be astounded and amazed (and delighted) if you could get
ATI to release their encumbered proprietary Catalyst driver sources

This is no Solaris 10 discussion and SXCE does include a ps program that works

Follow this procedure:
Download the FSWfspart and FSWfsmisc from the Belenix site, install
them, and follow the instructions on the README files. You are going to
be able to access the NTFS, ext2 and ext3 partitions you could have.

(as root)
# pkg set-authority -O http://ips.homeunix.com:1 ips.homeunix.com
# pkg refresh --full
# pkg install MBLgst-plugin-mp3 MBLgst-plugin-dvd MBLgst-plugin-ffmpeg

One of the top senior core technology Oracle guys is working with us, in
our community (AOSUG, Argentina OpenSolaris Users Group), to port
several Oracle products and configurations (it's not only the Oracle
database as a standalone product, he's working on the RAC, extended RAC,
dataguard, etc. configurations). We'll be posting the How to's very soon
in our forum, and in our new website.

I had the same disadvantage with every new operating system I've used in

Try to include the contrib repository as well. There are tons of other

And if Oracle is your problem, in no more than two weeks we are
publishing our notes about it.

One question... How is it going to do it without kernel extended
partitions support? I've compiled ntfs-3g, but in snv_111b it sees only
primary partitions. Waiting for snv_119.

I've installed these packages. WMA is not played (Totem says: "ASF plugin

[osol-discuss] xbmc on opensolaris?

2009-07-08 Thread Thomas Burgess
I was wondering if anyone has been able to get xbmc working under opensolaris.
I recently installed opensolaris on my desktop and i was impressed with how
easy it was. I have used ZFS on freebsd so i figured i should check out
opensolaris. If it is able to be compiled, i'd love to switch my htpc's to
opensolaris. I did a google search and didn't see much info out there
regarding xbmc on opensolaris.

I hope this is the right forum, i looked through the list and didn't really see
a multimedia forum...if it isn't the right one i'm very sorry. Thanks.

Alternatively, you can obtain legal versions of codecs for playback of
WMA and other proprietary-encoded content via Codeina or www.fluendo.com.

That in turn will enable playback using Totem and other applications.

I understand. But I principally don't want to buy something which may be gotten free. In future, if I have time, maybe I'll continue experiments with gstreamer-plugins-ugly on OpenSolaris...
It's interesting, that normal Linux distros have it in repositories. Why can't OpenSolaris have it? (rhetorical question)

Because most Linux distributions aren't produced and hosted by a
multi-national corporation bound by US law or because they've ignored
the legal risks. Sun is also responsible to its shareholders, which
wouldn't take kindly to exposing them to legal risks such as that.

That is truth and it took several years to do it correctly. Our
(OpenSolaris community) fault we were not investing more resources to
it. But we reached the point, finally.

To fix this we need one thing from you - how does it die? Can you
distribute some short WMA file with which I can reproduce it, so I can
try to root cause it and fix it? Or give me core file of dying totem?

And yes, we must care about patents. Some members of OpenSolaris
community would be heavilly impacted otherwise.

Do you mean the latest snapshot? Because the released version 1.0rc2 is
(with you widely known patches) working well.

You can ask the company which sold that graphic card to you for support.
It is task for company, we can only volunteer if we have enough
datasheets and volunteers to do it. Will you participate on development
of that driver?

Why not very good? Just so many data were changed between build 111b and
117. Isn't it cool there is so huge progress?

> But I need to update to snv_119 to see my partition, and it's not ready.

Yes and no. It depends on your knowledge. It is not available yet for
simple "click'n'click" but you can have such support immediately if you
know how to download/compile/apply. You are asking for something what is
in main repository for few days only.

Yes, some 3rd parties are not supporting OpenSolaris. And there are 3rd
parties not supporting other operating systems. What a surprise. Ask
those parties, volunteer there. OpenSolaris community is not good place
for such ranting.

It can "rocks" for you. Not for me. As 10+ years-Debian user I tried
Ubuntu several times (and I needed to use that ATi binary driver, OMG).
No, thanks.

One thing you should learn if you want to participate in good
communities - complaining is important part of the contribution. But
without enough data and/or complaining on proper places and/or offering
help, it is only ranting if no good effect for you nor the community.

[osol-discuss] new to opensolaris, trying to understand the directory structure better

2009-07-08 Thread Thomas Burgess
about 2-3 years ago i gave up windows for Ubuntu. I learned a lot but after
awhile decided it was time to move on, after a few other linux distros i
decided to try FreeBSD. I love FreeBSD for my servers but it's not that great
for the desktop. Because of that, i decided to give opensolaris a try. So far
i love it, it's amazingly easy to use, and it didn't take long to learn most of
the package management stuff. I've been scouring google for information, and
one thing i LOVED about FreeBSD is the handbook...it's amazing, is there
anything like that for opensolaris? I'd like to understand the inner workings
of the system better, and most importantly, the directory structure. It seems
theres a ton of places where software is installed...i get what /bin and
/usr/bin is all about, and i understand the idea of /opt but it seems like
things are way more separated in opensolaris. This isn't a BAD thing, i'd
just like to understand HOW it works and what it means.

Yes.

See "man filesystem" for part of the information, although it is slowly
changing and the man page will need updating from what I can tell.

docs.sun.com is a great place to start for the rest.

Re: [osol-discuss] Spell checking for Emacs?

2009-07-08 Thread Alex Viskovatoff
Well, I've had to sort this out on my own. It turns out that it's relatively
easy to get spell checking working under Emacs with aspell. That's what the two
Linux distros I have, OpenSUSE and Fedora, use for Emacs. Since they both come
with Hunspell, I guess the packagers of those distros couldn't get Hunspell
working under Emacs any better than I could. (It does compile under OpenSolaris
without any problems, and works from the command line. The problem is that it
doesn't work with the Emacs ispell mode.)

GNU aspell didn't compile for me with ncurses, so I used "./configure
--disable-curses". You don't need ncurses to be enabled in aspell anyway, if
you're only going to use it in Emacs.

While I appreciate that you are frustrated, let's not exaggerate the
issues. It was possible to perform installs and/or updates though there
were significant connectivity issues at times preventing that for many
users. Please also note that this past weekend was a national holiday

In the future, there will be additional mirroring options for those that

[osol-discuss] VirtualBox 3.0

2009-07-08 Thread Gary Bainbridge
With VirtualBox 2.2.2 and 2.2.4 in a non-global zone I am unable to use FreeBSD
as a guest, although FreeBSD works with VirtualBox 2.2.0.

So can SUN verify that FreeBSD works as a guest in VirtualBox 3.0 in a
non-global zone?

Also, is OpenBSD EVER going to work in VirtualBox? If not, then delist it from
the list of supported operating systems.

It would be nice to get supposedly "supported" operating systems like OpenBSD
to work in a VirtualBox release rather than charging off into the sunset and
adding new features when the old one doesn't work right to being with.

That is like adding a new valve mechanism but not improving the cam timing.

The best place to get the attention of the right VirtualBox people is on

Ok, when I have some more free time, maybe I'll recompile totem with
debugging symbols and give feedback.
gdb says "Cannot access memory at address 0xf6f64000"

Yes, I've already compiled it (svn version). I had to to disable gcc
optimization some times and to patch mlpdsp.c.

Not funny. And I don't want to change my card, I like it... Why does such
strange advices appear?

1) I'm admin, not a developer...
2) I haven't enough time
3) Is it a good practice "we don't have it in OS, but you may write it..."? :)

It's cool if traffic is free...

Yes :)

I don't complain, I'm only explaining all issues which I had with OpenSolaris.
I don't want to have a constructor (like RH 7.1). I want to have a normal
system which just works without any magic actions and do what I need. And if
it's a constructor, it should be a good constructor (compare ports collection
and OpenSolaris specs set...)
cd /usr/ports/multimedia/gstreamer-plugins-ugly/ && make && make install -- 3
steps, 15 minutes
And I'm trying to enable WMA playback for a 2 or 3 days...

FreeBSD, Ubuntu Linux are such systems (Yes, FreeBSD doesn't have Oracle
support, but XE works on it in some way. It's not a perfect desktop (commercial
soft is a problem), but it looks like a complete system...)
I've thought about FreeBSD->OpenSolaris migration at work, but now I see , that
this OS is not ready yet for desktop...

Ok. Let's stop flame and return to the constructive discussion...
I'll try to compile totem from specs with enabled debug if I have free time...
