[osol-discuss] Thank You Everyone
hi i just wat to thank everyone her for helping me get my Sata Drives working. Not only did i get them working by turning Raid off, but also i have them now as UFS and no longer NTFS i have Solaris Express on here at the moment and waiting for Compiz, on the next release and not sure when the next, release will be out or the version number of it. i have tried the test version and i thought it was good. It even had compiz working but i was unable to play my avi movies. The mplayer package i had goten from the ocean site did not work on the test version but only works on Solaris express and Solaris 10 and the package manager did not have what i needed for them to work either. Totem complains too much about encoders and ac3. Personally i prefer to have mplayer working on that test version. till the new Solaris comes out. i dont care for Belenix although KDE is good id rather have KDE on Solaris one day eventually if i ever know how to compile it.. The onely thing i ever did was rebuild a kernal in BSD i never knew anything about Solaris till a few weeks ago. from a friend who uses it at work. i do have Mplayer working on Solaris express at the moment though but with no compiz. i know no one really needs compiz. It is kind of a toy to play with for a while to show mother, gradma and family for a while then dont user it anymore really lol.but its still nice to have. hi i wonder why i do not see your reply here, but only in the email. However Soon as i reply to your reply, your reply shows up on this page Anyways to answer your question i N i do not plan on using that NTFS Drive permantly at all :) At this moment i am copying the contents of that drive to my SATA Drive Slice Then i plan on deleting the NTFS Partition and creating a Solaris II partition on that drive i call them whatever and whatever-II and Wherever as only an example Whatever could be backup-data and whereever could be docs-tutorials-clips. [osol-discuss] hello i just felt like venting out here
hi i just felt like venting out here i would first like to say some of you have been helpful. Yet some of you are ignorant,Self centered and unfriendly. i told you i am new to Solaris and i have been using BSD for a while. and you have this attitude that says well lets give her something hard to do lets show her how complex we guys think so that she will just give up. i never gave up in my life and never quit anything no matter how hard people tried to make me quit. If you insult me you insult my Guru friend FMJ from BSD and here as well. Some of you instead of trying to help me step by step you throw things at me while showing off how much smarter you think you are, i hope there is someone kind enough here to actually help me. The war is over! People in the BSD forums are not like that They dont treat me like that.and dont test me either. My friend FMJ has been helping me for a long time from BSD and i believe he has a few articles and posts here. A few articles and Posts on here as well Also you keep telling me about Belenix (Ubuntu faced) OS and how great it is. Like its the greatest OS since sliced bread. i dont want to use Belenix to me its Garbage ok? Geos from te commodre 64 acted better then that. i dont care if you dont like my comments either i tell it like it is BELENIX IS GARBAGE Period!! i dont care if you throw me off the forums either i would like a little help here getting my Solaris 10 (((NOT BELENIX)) to read my ONE NTFS Drive (Properly) So i can move those files to my SATA UFS Formatted Drives. So Far the software im using does nto read all my fiels and folders 75% of them look like they are not there i am using this software Package FSWmisc now mounts NTFS partitions directly. No special mount_ntfs program required. It is based on Martin Rosenau's Can you show me a different package with instructions? The last person who helped me pointed me to a package i have top compile and i dont know how to do any of that, i am use to using packages and Ports on the BSD System Also i had done fdisk and partiton and want to make sure i have done it correctly i gave root about 475.7gb and swap at least 256 megs if that is corect? i did not want to use /usr 6 as i wanted the files to be root only operated. Anyways Thank You for listening to me If my typing or spelling is incorrect please forgive me i have a little dislexia, heather This message posted from opensolaris.org ___ opensolaris-discuss mailing list opensolaris-discuss@opensolaris.org
Re: [osol-discuss] Help with Compiz
alanc hi i had tried the test version of Solaris Everything seemed ok with Compiz it looked nice. My drive mapping was different then it is now. i was unhappy about Mplayer being absent there, and not being able to play avi with totem. There was no xvid packaging was there either. The packages i normally use now on Solaris 10 or Solaris Express >From ocean. did not work on the Solaris test system i felt like i was using Ununtu with that package manager there i hope the final version has all that working properly This message posted from opensolaris.org ___ opensolaris-discuss mailing list opensolaris-discuss@opensolaris.org

hi Can someone please help me i was able to fix this problem a few years ago but now i can not. i dont even see xscreensaver on here. When i login as a user i get that pop up saying something about a child process and an xscreensaver not found. i am sure you all have seen this before. i thought had thought the solution was to echo this line into the .profile or was it the profile file PATH=$PATH /usr/openwin/bin That did not work at all Can someone explain it more please. Re: [osol-discuss] Samsung Sata Drives Not Detected
Even though i was able to connect to the internet my machine kept freezing up when i logged out as user Also the no screensaver issue was still there for normal users only and not root, So i added the line PATH=$PATH /usr/openwin/bin to .profile to fix that as i had read long ago. All the manual fsck runs did not seem to help much on driver errors from constant reboots on screen freezes during logout attempts. i wound up just reinstalling all over again, hopefully its more stable. This time i discovered the DHCP option i did not notice before so its set to DHCP now and installing. [osol-discuss] problem with DHCP
hi Ok i have solaris installed but i have a hard time configuring for a connection. There is no DHCP option in solaris like there was in solaris express. In BSD setting up a connection was simple. Host ,Doman,IPV4 gateway, name server,ipv4 asddress, and netmask and i was online It looks all more confusing in Solaris :) no matter waht i did i was unable to connect. i have cable modem and router.my card workls on solaris but i did not set it up properly as it seems. In Solaris i do not quite understand it at all as the settings look different then in BSD i have to constasntly do sys-unconfig to try again i tried the touch /etc/hostname.le0 and /etc/dhcp.le0 rebooted and it failed am i supose to use le0 ? or lo0- or rtls0 i tried them all and they all failed on boot up i really dont understand how to set up my connection my cable modem loopback lo0 and its rtls0 How do i get a dhcp connection please Also is there as way i can do this without having to sys-unconfig everytime Thank You This message posted from opensolaris.org ___ opensolaris-discuss mailing list opensolaris-discuss@opensolaris.org
Re: [osol-discuss] Samsung Sata Drives Not Detected
hi Thank You. You have been so much help to me. Heres where i am now. i have managed to back up all my SATA drives by moving the data to a (Solaris readable IDE drive), and what i was not able to fit i squeezed onto at least 12 RW Dvd Disks. The Two Sata drives are ready for UFS Format soon and Solaris will see them as i turn raid off and leave it as IDE As i said i no nothing about UFS or ZFS this is all new to me. i will be installing Solaris once again this morning or what ever time it is now :) and get my email up and running as well as web Then i guess we will see what happens next This message posted from opensolaris.org ___ opensolaris-discuss mailing list opensolaris-discuss@opensolaris.org
Re: [osol-discuss] Samsung Sata Drives Not Detected
Hi Well i do have NTFS files system on all my drives now. i do have a question though is there any other possible way i can convert my drives to ZFS or UFS with software similar to partition magic in Windows right now. This way i can get all my data where i want it before hand. Also does that mean once i do any of the above i will no longer be able to access those drives when i do boot into Vista. Re: [osol-discuss] Samsung Sata Drives Not Detected
Yes you are right folder lock was not the problem i installed Solaris 10 it without folder lock. i saw the drives but was unable to mount them becasue i really dont want to format them in UFS as i have no where to move all that data. On Belenix i tried it from te Live Disk and te same thing no Change Drive X and Z have almost a terra combined Drives C and D are Ide and im not worried about that But i lke to have access to all of them all of the time For now i use FreeBSD and Vista on This machine Seperate Drives of course i dont believe in using them both at the same time. OpenBSD as my Primary Web Server on differnt machine here The Server does ot have as much memory and Cpu milage as this one for Solaris This message posted from opensolaris.org ___ opensolaris-discuss mailing list opensolaris-discuss@opensolaris.org
Re: [osol-discuss] Samsung Sata Drives Not Detected
Hi Thank You for your reply Well what happened was this i was able to see the drives through dmesg |grep ata after i set the bios Raid to IDE. i did everythign correct through vfstab However i was not able to actually mount them in Solaris 10 but i was able to mount at least one of them on Belenix. IS Belenix still Solaris. i read also that i must format the drives in order for Solaris to use them as UFS file types, and since i do not want to format can that be a problem too if i already have Data on those drives that i cat afford to lose. Iis this really what i have to do? becasue i really dont have enough space to move all that Data. My question also is this. IS it also possible that Solaris was unable to see the available and free Space becasue i had about 300 gigs of it Locked using an old windows Folder lock program? here from this link http://www.newsoftwares.net/folderlock/ Thanks if you can answer my question on that.
