Re: [osol-discuss] Installing IPS on a opensolaris.

2009-08-20 Thread Thommy M . Malmström
Seems like I have SXCE (code named nevada) instead
 of actual Opensolaris.

Do yourself a favor and go for a VirtualBox solution if you want to get a
preview of OpenSolaris/Solaris. Just install the latest VirtualBox on the
nearest computer you have around and then install OpenSolaris/Solaris in Vbox.
You will get a much better experience of OpenSolaris/Solaris running the latest
version.

[osol-discuss] Installing IPS on a opensolaris.

2009-08-19 Thread atul kulkarni
I am new to Opensolaris (only a couple of days). I have a command line sudo
access to an Opensolaris box. During reading few docs I learnt it has a package
manager IPS which can be used from the command line using 'pkg' command. But
its missing from my system. I tried finding packages to install it, but
couldn't find it. Any place where it can be found.

Do you have Solaris Express Community Edition?

If so, the 'pkg' command is not available.

What does the contents of /etc/release say?

If it's not on your system, then you're using solaris express community
edition and not OpenSolaris. As such, you'll have to either build
pkg(5) yourself and install the resultant package or install
OpenSolaris itself.

From what I can see, it's not Opensolaris. It's SXCE. What I dont
understand is how you get two different release numbers 67 and 89.
Did you type it manually and make a typo?

There is no IPS or pkg binary. There is no way to install pkg into
SXCE, and if you did copy it, it probably render SXCE useless when first
used.

You need to download the latest Opensolaris at:

http://www.opensolaris.org/os/downloads/

Do not choose Solaris Express CE (SXCE). Choose one of the selections
for OpenSolaris 2009.06.**

Yes, that is Solaris Express (and a very old version at that). The pkg
command is not a part of Solaris Express. Solaris Express supports SVR4
packaging natively. Your options are to install pkg manually by
compiling the source gate and installing the packages it creates or
install OpenSolaris on this machine.

Why do you want to use pkg is probably a good question? Mixing pkg and
SVR4 on Solaris Express isn't going to be the most straightforward thing
in the world.

Joyent doesn't use OpenSolaris 200x releases yet. Currently, they're
still using Solaris Express.

I did some digging to install IPS under SXCE, and I found

Although I havn't installed it yet, but are you sure it will break SXCE??

I want to install firefox with Xvfb on this system. I tried installing the
packages but started getting multiple dependency errors.
Since I am a newbie on OpenSolaris, but used to synaptic and apt-get on Ubuntu.
So started looking for something similar and found IPS(pkg).

If you attempt to use it to manage packages that are installed under
'/'; yes.

If you want to experiment with it, be sure that you only create and
manipulate pkg(5) images with it under their own, isolated directory
tree (such as /opt/ips assuming that /opt/ips is a directory that does
not currently exist).

The system you've indicated is possibly too old or out of date to be
able to run the FireFox packages provided.

It won't break SXCE, but none of the package repositories will have
packages compatible with a SXCE release that old.
