I've been working with pkgsrc on OpenSolaris and SXCE for a bit, and I can say
from experience that pkgsrc isn't entirely suitable for SXCE, at least from the
ease-of-use point of view.

BFU is not the update procedure for SXCE - it's a quick way for
developers of a portion of OpenSolaris code (the "ON" or "OS &
Networking" consolidation) to install new builds of that subset
(about 20% of the whole SXCE OS) for testing.

The SXCE upgrade procedure is to download the CD's or DVD's for
the new build and run either Live Upgrade or the OS Installer
upgrade option.

Re: [osol-discuss] IPS on SXCE?

2008-07-03 Thread Rob Clark
I have OpenSolaris 2008.05 running and really enjoy the ease of the "Package
Manager GUI". I was disappointed when I fired up Solaris Express: Community
Edition (SX:CE) snv_91 and found there was no package manager.

I looked for the package's project and found that one could compile it from
source and install it on Solaris 11 - but that would be (very) unsupported.

SXCE is a platform used to build OpenSolaris so it seems we ought to (try to)
follow the updating procedures (BFU) in place (
http://opensolaris.org/os/downloads/#build ) .

Then there is F/OSS http://opensolaris.org/os/project/pkgbase/ so what do we
choose.

There is the NetBSD packages system:
http://www.netbsd.org/docs/pkgsrc/pkgsrc.txt which has support Solaris since
1999 (and is svr4) - so why are we reinventing the wheel.

I'll be reading many web pages to figure out which way things are going and try
to go that way without "Flag Daying myself" - like I need that :( .

Cap-eye-install really works on os0805 as well.

Right, I compiled ON sucessfully without code change.
Let me know if I can do any help for you.

The problem on my side is, Install command of cap-eye-install
can make a tarball. But, is there any doc to guide how to upgrade
to my own kernel? just like cap-eye-install on SXCE. You know, the default
rootfs in the kernel is uts, on indiana, zfs is the rootfs, instead.

I think it's probably reasonable to assume that Sun won't want to
support two different packaging systems any longer than they have to.
That said, there's no IPS roadmap for SXCE as yet, AFAIK.

Technical discussions of what's needed to build ON should happen on
opensolaris-code or on-discuss.Discussions about what Sun can
make legally redistributable are at some level always going to be
limited to discussions between the few people working on it and the
lawyers reviewing the legal documents involved, since many of those
legal documents contain confidentiality clauses.

Actually, ON does compile on OpenSolaris 2008.05. There were outside
reports of that a week or so ago.

You just have to do two things:

* Install a tarball of the correct compiler
* Set your PATH / environment properly

Manual changes? If you mean code changes. No. None are required.

If it it's on the repository at pkg.opensolaris.org, or in OpenSolaris
2008.05, it is redistributable.

Please do!

With the advent of OpenSolaris 2008.05, there shouldn't be any "missing bits."

It may compile if you do some manual changes, it will not create signed
binaries.

wbem is still not redistributable.

I'll soon check to be able to update the list of missing bits.

As long as ON does not compile on any opensolaris based distro (and Indiana is
such a distro), shuting down SXCE would shut down the possibility to compile
ON.

Is is true that I said that, but I don't know what Sun's plans are.

My understanding is that OpenSolaris releases are replacing SXDE, but
are not replacing SXCE for a long time.

No specific plans to changes SXCE have been stated, that I know of.

I'd figure that no plans have been made and the people involved in such
decisions are looking at Indiana and how it plays out, especially in
regards to mixing IPS and SVR4 packages. After all, traditional Solaris
is more about staying Unix enough to not break backwards compatibility.
