Re: [osol-discuss] Unable to access the open solaris across the network..Urg!!!

2009-10-28 Thread Thompson Kernighan Ritchie
os means open solaris.
os is used on virtual box(vb). But, you missed one thread in help
forum(undetected ntfs partitions ). I found os on vb very slow. So, i
uninstalled os and vb. I made all my partitions primary using some win app
software. I installed os on one of the partitions. So, there is no virtual box
now.
I said abt ubuntu and os in the view of moving to these operating systmes from
windows. I thought sole dependency on windows is bad. So, I want to use ubuntu
and os both to remove the dependency on any single operating sys. Regarding
servers, as I am java developer, I use visual svn server for src repository and
tomcat/weblogic(can be any java based server in future) for my dev work. I
want to use ubuntu as primary desktop and secondary server and open solaris as
primary server and secondary desktop.

Weren't the following statements true:
  * You have virtualbox configured
  * You have many servers
  * An MS Windows
  * An Ubuntu
  * An Opensolaris

So there has to be something that connects them all network wise. If any
of these are virtual machines, something has to connect them to the real
physical server.

You mentioned Virtual Box window in another thread which makes me think
you are actually running this in there too and that you may also have a
problem with that.

What does your networking topology look like?

PS: please use paragraphs and proper sentences when writing. Also use
uppercase and lower case when the punctuation rules state so. Your

just say yes or no to following questions to enable others to give solutions.
Have you made the network configuration manual?
Is your network configuration based on static ip or dhcp?
For manual n/w config and static ip, have you added the ip addr, subnetmask and
gateway to the network conn?
Have you selected this network config as the default gateway device?
Have you added dns server addresses such as OPENDNS ip addresses
(208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220) in the DNS tab?
Moreover, in my system i did all this. But, yet i am unable to connect to my
internet. I think the default gateway device is not retaining what is
given/selected.
Because after saving and closing all these settings. Again i opened my network
settings, it is showing default gateway device option as empty/blank option.

It was announced today that NWAM v 1.0 will be available as a separate
download. NWAM v1.0 has all the capability you require. It will be
available in about 1 - 2 days to the general public.

Suraj Sankar wrote:

1. OpenSolaris and Solaris 10 are two different versions with some
differences in how the networking works. Which did you install? I'm
guessing Solaris 10 based on the reference to sys-unconfig, unless you
used the soon-to-be-discontinued SXCE.

2. What do the commands ifconfig -a and netstat -rn say? Make sure
the netstat command lists at least one entry for default and that the
ifconfig command lists at least one entry other than lo0 and that this
other entry needs to say UP and have a valid IP address (inet 1.2.3.4).

3. If ifconfig does not give a valid interface, what hardware and
network interface are you using? Is this wired or wireless?

4. What network options did you choose after sys-unconfig? Fixed IP or
DHCP? DNS for name lookup? Etc.?

5. If you selected DNS, do you have valid nameservers in
/etc/resolv.conf? At least on Solaris 10, this file will be created
even with DHCP (OpenSolaris uses NWAM which is different). What happens
if you type ping 1.2.3.4 where 1.2.3.4 is the IP address of your DNS
server.

6. In general, when debugging, start with ping numeric IP, and with
another IP address on your local network (such as the defaultrouter
gateway). I.e. not hostnames. You need to get this working before name
lookup.

7. While trying the ping command above, run snoop as root in
another terminal. Take note on whether this shows anything incoming at all.

Hugh.

PS: you would probably have gotten a better reply to your first question
by providing more detail of your system and what you tried.
