Re: [osol-help] Opinions and how to move forward?
I had not planned on this having third party support. I am currently upgrading to 134b. Using the openindiana legacy source. I plan to test and see how this runs, and then choose whether to move forward or completely to openindiana at this point. I am mostly sure I will be sticking with 134b on opensolaris for now, but I will begin building a test system soon that I will see how well openindiana does. I have much interest in following this project and seeing how illumos, nexenta, and openindiana all pull together. -- This message posted from opensolaris.org ___ opensolaris-help mailing list opensolaris-help@opensolaris.org
Re: [osol-help] Opinions and how to move forward?
I guess another question is, if I am successful with 134b, it is of course still unstable release. How much do i need to worry about that? I have seen a fair amount of people on the internet stating they run solidly on 134b. I am strictly using this as a data storage server and ZFS is my reason for being here. More thoughts please! :) -- This message posted from opensolaris.org ___ opensolaris-help mailing list opensolaris-help@opensolaris.org
Re: [osol-help] Opinions and how to move forward?
Interesting! The question of what would happen if a security issue arose in 134b needs to be considered as well as the possibility of using a newer (better?) version of ZFS. I would not want to run dedup on production at the moment but would really like it at a later date. For that to happen I would like to wait to see if any bugs pop out and wait for them to be at least considered. please somebody help me install my opensolaris 2009.06 x86 using live cd. i have x86 - system, however, when i booted the cd, it showed that x64 bit OS was loaded. That is, you have a 64-bit capable x86 system... then it halted.. Try to boot the kernel with option -v. Append it at the end of the kernel$ line in the grub boot menu. More thoughts please! :) I have a number of OpenSolaris build 134 (as Alan said, there isn't a 'b') in production and I've yet so experience any problems with them. I have moved back to Solaris 10 on a couple of systems, but where I'm using features that aren't back ported (CIFS, crossbow, dedup and desktops) I'm happy to stick with 134 for now. I have a couple of OpenIndiana boxes on trial, but I have yet to beat up on them so I can't comment on their reliability. I would not use an OpenSolaris system on the wild side of a firewall due to the lack of security updates. -- Ian. ___ opensolaris-help mailing list opensolaris-help@opensolaris.org
Re: [osol-help] Opinions and how to move forward?
More thoughts please! :) Or you could continue using eiher Opensolaris 2009.06 or snv_b134 until Oracle release what suppose to be Opensolaris replacement Solaris 11 Express at the end of the year, and it is mention, that it might include ZFS data encryption, not seen anywhere else until Oracle releases the code, probably here at Opensolaris home page after solaris 11 ships out. ZFS gains data encryption http://www.h-online.com/open/news/item/ZFS-gains-data-encryption-1101860.html (slow site to load) PS it was mention by an oracle official that solaris will remain opensource and only the brand name opensolaris was being retired in favor of solaris 11. and oracle will continue working with opensolaris :-) quote: Dan Roberts, Director of Solaris Product Management surprised attendees by stating that the OpenSolaris brand was going away. Although the name itself won’t continue, the source code will continue to be open and available to the developer community. What Oracle is doing here, he said, is simplifying its naming conventions. “We are going to focus everything around Solaris 11 to keep it simple,” said Roberts. “There will no longer be a separate brand called OpenSolaris.” He stressed that Oracle will continue to work with the Linux community on the open-source version of OpenSolaris, as well as Oracle Linux and its Red Hat Compatible Linux. “While we have changed the way we will work with the community, Solaris will remain open source and the source code will be made available to customers.” http://www.cmswire.com/cms/information-management/oracle-unveils-mysql-55-says-goodbye-to-opensolaris-brand-oow10-008649.php -- This message posted from opensolaris.org ___ opensolaris-help mailing list opensolaris-help@opensolaris.org
Re: [osol-help] Unable to install 2009.06 x86 using live cd
i tried the cd on my classmate's laptop, the message that supposedly will display next is the options for languages, but none popped-out. it just showed something like opensolaris 2009.06 64-bit OS.. i've waited hours for the language menu but it's just blank.. thanks @jkeil, i'll try what you've helped, then i'll post the results. Re: [osol-help] Unable to install 2009.06 x86 using live cd
Are you sure your processor is 32bit? no i'm not, but i have win7 x86, it can show anything about my system, then it says that my system is x86 capable. i've also tried to install its x64 version but the installer didn't ran. anyway, i'll double check. thanks kornax Are you sure you chose the correct installation options? i'm new to OpenSolaris, also my classmate, but he'd installed the OS well, using the defaults (the highlighted ones) in the installation menu. i'll followed what he'd done, but encountered this problem.. -- This message posted from opensolaris.org ___ opensolaris-help mailing list opensolaris-help@opensolaris.org

Re: [osol-help] Solaris network config probs in X86
You can find and download packages here: http://pkg.opensolaris.org/release/en/index.shtml You can also look in the DDU (Device Driver Utility) and see if your Network card is showing up there at all, if a driver is loaded or if it has failed. Re: [osol-help] ISCSI-Opensolaris FileServer Problem
I ran your message through a translator because I do not know french. Hope you do not mind. Hello everybody, Then I resume my problem. I have a OpenSolaris machine with 2 network card, 1 1 prod sharing a ZFS pool ISCSI 1TB ISCSI in with Deduplication. At my client, a Windows 2008 R2 with microsoft iscsi initiator. After a few minutes, my OpenSolaris server is no longer joinable, or the iSCSI network or the network prod. What are you using to provision your iscsi targets? Comstar? I have read that the old iscsi initiators on solaris have had issues with this. I have successfully run with Comstar and it has been working ok. No deduplication is being used here so far though. Anyhow, maybe with the translation, as loose as it may be, someone may be able to throw down some help here. -- This message posted from opensolaris.org ___ opensolaris-help mailing list opensolaris-help@opensolaris.org
