2004-09-30 Thread Shaw Graham George
Hi Steven,

They are posted in the Request Tracker
(http://www.aet.tu-cottbus.de/rt2/NoAuth/Buglist.html, or via
http://www.openssl.org//support/rt2.html), under item 951.

I'm not holding my breathe about integration soon ... :-)

Hi George,

I'm surprised that nobody has responded. I may have to port an application
using OpenSSL to AS/400 at some stage so I would appreciate it if you would
post the patches. Perhaps if you post them the team will integrate them.

Regards,

Steven

Hi,

I've made a new port of OpenSSL version 0.9.7d for the AS/400 (iSeries).

OS/400 versions V5R1M0 upwards are supported.

It is based on a previous port (version 0.9.7b?) by Brian Morris
([EMAIL PROTECTED], ticket #701), and also includes the new EBCDIC patches
by Richard Koenning ([EMAIL PROTECTED], ticket #843).

But it also adds a few more changes that (IMHO) improve the port and build
environment, and extends the port to include service programs (AS/400
version of shared libraries), and ports for different EBCDIC characters sets
(CCSIDs).

I've also included an extensive README that should prove useful for OpenSSL
users in explaining the port, and some of the AS/400-specific issues.

Any questions, no problem.

Cheers,

G.

I feel I need to raise a little bit of awareness here. The OpenSSL
Project is entirely volunteer driven, and as such, we (those having
write access to the repository) are working mostly on our free time.
This means that there are a ton of other facets of life playing in,
including looking for jobs (and jobs in this field are still a bit
scarse), *doing* your job (which may or may not be related to
OpenSSL), taking care of the family, taking care of your self.

Just to give you a picture of what life can be like, I've been silent
to the almost extreme for a while, because I'm dealing with very deep
family issues, and have to contemplate seeing my son move to the other
side of the Atlantic Ocean, which has had a huge impact on my
emotional self, and my capacity to focus. I've used the little
external focus I had left to do my job properly, and to plan for my
future (next job, other projects that I'm barely keeping alive, ...).
I haven't even looked at the OpenSS bugs database for ages (= a few
months, which is a lot considering I used to look at the stuff there
about twice a day before that).

So, I'd like to ask for a little bit of patience with us, as we all
have some kind of life we need to take care of and make a priority as
well.

Thanks for listening.

2004-09-30 Thread Shaw Graham George
Slight misunderstanding, I think Steven was commenting about the lack of reply to my
first mail, which asked where to make the submission of the port.

I'd been a bit lazy and hadn't searched the web site fully, to find out that I just
had to mail it to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

And if anybody has, please don't misinterpret my comment:

I'm not holding my breathe about integration soon ... :-)

... this was only added because I'm pretty sure that you have higher priority work to
do than to integrate a port that is, for most people, pretty obscure.

2004-09-30 Thread Steven Reddie
Hi Richard,

I didn't so much mean lack of response from the OpenSSL team, but lack of
response from anyone. I assumed there would be many people interested in an
OS/400 port so was surprised that there had been no responses stating so.

I greatly appreciate the work that you and all members of the OpenSSL team
do and appreciate the balance that you must maintain.

Regards,

Steven

2004-09-30 Thread Marcel von Gunten
FWIW, I am one of those waiting for George's code to be merged in.
He has done a great job putting this patch together and it will make
it a whole lot easier to maintain current OpenSSL builds on the AS/400.
