I think the wiki is a great place to get ideas out while we look for a
cross-project specs workflow in the meantime. Here's a link to the TC
meeting [1] where we talked about creating a style guide similar to this
one:

http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Cloud_APIs_REST_Style_Guide

The goal is to give developers guidance while designing APIs so we're
consistent across all the projects. If we don't get this sort of style guide
to point people to, we'll continue to experience inconsistency across
projects. Let's start on the wiki, talk more at the Summit, and iterate as
we go.

I think its more an issue around actually having guidelines and
educating people where to find them than needing teeth to enforce them.
Where I've seen variation in the APIs in Nova its been primarily because
people haven't known what the conventions are than anything else.

The wiki is good for the complete document, but it seems a little difficult
to discuss API consistency.
So how about using gerrit for this discussion like specs?

We have the start of some guidelines here:

https://wiki.openstack.org/wiki/Governance/Proposed/APIGuidelines

I think it would be very useful if those who are interested in helping
out add info to that wiki from the perspective of the project they work
on and comment (inline) where what is already there is inconsistent with
what they do. User input too as to what they want would be useful.

That would give us something much more concrete to discuss and debate
rather than just a common desire to have consistency across our APIs.

I understand your concern but I don’t think there’s too much danger of
duplication.

I see this API WG effort as being more complementary to the EU WG than
overlapping it. The API WG is focused on defining/implementing the API whereas
EU WG is focused on creating application that consume the API. The place where
they meet (and somewhat overlap) in the middle is the API.

The impetus for the API WG group needs to come from within the OpenStack
developer community. They need to be in charge of it. They should absolutely
seek feedback from the EU WG but trying to mix the two together wouldn’t be the
best path forward, IMHO.

I think you’ve got it right by suggesting that specs process would be the best
channel for feedback between these WGs.

I think getting started and produce some material to discuss in Paris
would be the first step. Like other teams or WG, a wiki page for the
team with a mission, roadmap, members would be a start.

I would suggest to stay close to the TC and PTLs to get buy-in from
them, increasing the chances of smooth implementations, while getting
constant feedback from downstream consumers of the APIs.

Seems like there is some overlap with the end user (i.e. consumer) working
group at https://wiki.openstack.org/wiki/End_User_Working_Group

Sounds like it would be worth discussing with them on how to focus on these
needs. The scope of the end user is much larger than just the API but a
consistent API is needed for easy consumption

How about seeing with Chris Kemp where things fit together ? There is a fairly
open structure under the user committee if you would like a place to form but
it is important to avoid duplication. With the specs process, there is now much
more opportunity for users (in all different forms) to give input before code
is written.

Whatever it ends up being, it needs to have some teeth to it. Otherwise,
we're going to end up in the exact same place we're in now, where each
project does something slightly different.

That could mean putting the working group under the user committee and
giving it teeth via some policy that would allow the group to look over
proposed API changes *before* the code that implements the API was
merged into an OpenStack project.

2014-09-24 Thread Akihiro Motoki
It is an important topics towards good user experience.
There are many inconsistencies across projects and every API has pros and cons.
We need to share API best practices and it is nice.

I am interested in the topic both as Neutron developer and
from API consumer as Horizon developer.
If the meeting time allows, I would like to join!

I'd be very interested in participating as well.

At the last Design Summit at the cross project API consistency session
we talked about setting up a wiki page for guidelines. I've made a
start on this though its very much from a Nova perspective and could
do with input from all the other projects.
