[Openstack-operators] [User-committee] [scientific-wg] [UX] Quota Management Interviews

2016-08-16 Thread Danielle Mundle
[Apologies for cross-posting]

Hi everyone,

A new research initiative is starting on behalf of the OpenStack UX Project
Team and we could use some volunteer feedback from operators. We're
interested in learning more detail about *quota management * – specifically
the *pain points around managing quotas*, and *quotas at scale* – as it is
consistently raised as a challenge.

Interview sessions will be held on Google Hangouts throughout this week (of
8/15) and next week (of 8/22) and will last no longer than one hour (time
can be flexible). The session would involve you, a moderator (me), and
possibly a few notetakers/observers from the community who otherwise would
not take part in the conversation. The findings will be used to create user
stories for the community and be reported anonymously in aggregate.

If you are interested, please indicate any available times on this doodle
poll (http://doodle.com/poll/7tid473za2hpi6e7) and I will follow up by
sending a meeting invitation with the Google Hangout link required to
access the scheduled session.

Thanks in advance for all your help in supporting UX research in the
OpenStack community!

[Openstack-operators] [Ops] [UX] Video Posted - Results Presentation: Operator Information Needs

2016-08-17 Thread Danielle Mundle
Hello all,

We've recently uploaded a video presenting the findings from the recent UX
research on information needs of operators. There will also be a session at
the Ops Summit next week in NY around how to move forward with potential
solutions.

https://youtu.be/dktorTIqU5s

Main findings:

* Overall, operators tend to follow a similar process for information
gathering:

1) Google or internal information search to isolate the problem

2) Reach out to an external source for alternate ideas – usually another
co-worker or an operator in the community (indirectly via IRC or mailing
list)

3) Comb through the code to check for more granular clues to pinpoint the
issue

* While participants acknowledged that total consolidation of all OpenStack
information was out of scope, a common theme among ideal solutions was
better organization of information.

Potential solutions (in no particular order):

   - Create a knowledge base of problems encountered and solutions proposed
   -
   - Utilize a template to ensure a common structure for capturing
   environment info
   -
   - Collect “best practices” for common tasks
   -
   - Optimize search for Google results
   -
   - (Smaller company) access to other problem-solving resources provided
   by (larger) companies
   - More detailed OpenStack logging
   -
   - Having a greater number and/or better quality of operator-focused docs
   -
   - The ability to add comments to specific documentation pages
   -
   - Providing reference architectures as a learning tool

Feel free to add your thoughts and comments!

[Openstack-operators] [UX] Horizon Searchlight Usability Study - Call for Participants

2016-08-30 Thread Danielle Mundle
Hello operators!

Our next UX project is a usability evaluation on a proposed search function
in Horizon. We’re looking to talk to operators that have some familiarity
with Horizon and use it on occasion for their role.

The sessions would last ~45 minutes and be conducted remotely online
through WebEx during September 12th through the 21st. I will be moderating
the one-on-one session, and there is a chance that up to 3-4
observers/notetakers from the community would be present on the call.

If you’d like to help with this initiative, please indicate your
availability on this Doodle poll: [ http://doodle.com/poll/g6pv2iucktuemgyy
] and include your full name and email address. I will then follow up with
a meeting invitation for your scheduled time. Feel free to contact me with
any questions.

Thanks for supporting UX research in the OpenStack community!

[Openstack-operators] [UX] Cloud Architect Information Needs Study - Call for Participants

2016-09-19 Thread Danielle Mundle
Attn Operators:

The OpenStack UX team is kicking off a new study that focuses on
understanding the information needs of Cloud Architects. We’re looking to
talk to people in a software architect role to understand how they *research
and recommend cloud solutions* to their employers. For example, what drives
the decision to recommend OpenStack, Kubernetes, VMWare or another solution?

The sessions would last no longer than one hour and be conducted remotely
online through WebEx during September 19th through the 30th. I will be
moderating the one-on-one session, and there is a chance that up to 2-3
observers/notetakers from the community would be present on the call.

If you’d like to help with this initiative, please indicate your
availability on this Doodle poll: [ http://doodle.com/poll/ic56yx5tauww33h2 ]
and include your full name and email address. I will then follow up with a
meeting invitation for your scheduled time. Feel free to contact me with
any questions.

We are also still recruiting operators who occasionally use Horizon in a
production environment for the Searchlight Usability project. More details
and scheduling here: http://doodle.com/poll/g6pv2iucktuemgyy

Thanks for supporting UX research in the OpenStack community!

[Openstack-operators] [user-committee][scientific-wg][api][UX] Results Presentation: Managing OpenStack Quotas within Production Environments

2016-09-19 Thread Danielle Mundle
(Apologies for cross-posting)

The OpenStack UX team will be giving a presentation this Wednesday, 9/21
that summarizes results from a series of interviews intended to understand
how operators manage quotas at scale as well as the pain points associated
with that process.

The study was conducted by Danielle Mundle (IRC: uxdanielle) and included
operators from CERN, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, Workday, Intel
and Universidade Federal de Campina Grande and others.

The presentation details can be found at the top of the OpenStack UX wiki:

[Openstack-operators] [UX] Request for participation in OpenStack student research

2016-10-21 Thread Danielle Mundle
Howdy operators,

In my free time, I am mentoring a group of CS students as they work on a UX
research class project. They've chosen to build on the work Piet and I did
a few months ago around information needs for operators (
https://youtu.be/dktorTIqU5s). Since a few of you provided excellent
feedback on that topic before, I was wondering if you'd be willing to help
the students out to meet their requirement of conducting a focus group for
their own research.

It's my understanding they are focusing on improvements in two of the areas
Piet and I highlighted - error messages and log files.

If you are interested, please contact Travis at travjon...@gmail.com. He'll
provide more information and work with you to coordinate a time in the next
2-3 weeks. And if you have any other contacts who would be interested in
weighing in on error messages/logging in OpenStack, the more the merrier.

Thanks for your help,
