[Openstack-operators] Draft Agenda for PAO Ops Meetup (August 18, 19)

2015-08-03 Thread Tom Fifield

Hi all,

Registrations are going well for our meetup in Palo Alto. If you're on
the fence, hopefully this discussion will get you quickly over the line
so you don't miss out!

http://www.eventbrite.com/e/openstack-ops-mid-cycle-meetup-tickets-17703258924

So, I've taken our suggestions and attempted to wrangle them into
something that would fit in the space we have over 2 days.

As a reminder, we have two different kind of sessions - General
Sessions, which are discussions for the operator community aimed to
produce actions (eg best practices, feedback on badness), and**Working
groups**focus on specific topics aiming to make concrete progress on
tasks in that area.

As always, some stuff has been munged and mangled in an attempt to fit
it in. For example, we'd expect to talk about Kolla more generally in
the context of "Using Containers for Deployment", because there are some
other ways to do that too. Similarly, we'd expect the "ops project"
discussion to be rolled into the session on the user committee.

Anyway, take a look at the below and reply with your comments! Is
anything missing? Something look like a terrible idea? Want to
completely change the room layout? There's still a little bit of
flexibility at this stage.

Looks awesome Tom! I do have one suggestion though. If the Philly Ops
meetup was any suggestion, people started leaving by noon the second day
to catch flights. Tools and Monitoring, which is always a great topic to
discuss, probably should be moved to the first day.

Other than that great, and I'm crazy excited!

2015-08-03 Thread David Medberry
I think planning for people to leave early is a very poor idea. Planning to
make sure things that need to get done first is fine though.
Let's not think of the second day as a partial day.

Lightening is when you make something lighter. Lightning talks are meant to
be about fast lightning speed talks so s/Lightening/Lightning/g

I've added a bit more detail under Upgrades and would happily moderate that
bit (as likely would any TWC-er.)

Any chance that the Ops meetup will have some ability for folks to
teleconference in?

Thoughts?

+1 please

just record it and upload it somewhere would be useful, I'm not sure if
it will work for ambient talk but I think is worth to try

Oh i get this. But the harsh reality is that, that's what happens. At
both San Antonio and Philly, people used "I have to catch my flight" an
the excuse to leave after lunch on the second day. And having the
Monitoring and Tooling talk with a larger group is better then a smaller
group. Having a constructive conversation around how different operators
check the health of their clouds seems like everyone could benefit.

This is a topic veteran and beginner Operators can learn from and
contribute to, even if there is a chance that we just rehash the same
things over and over.

Subject: [Openstack-operators] Draft Agenda for PAO Ops Meetup (August 18, 19)

Hi all,

Registrations are going well for our meetup in Palo Alto. If you're on the
fence, hopefully this discussion will get you quickly over the line so you
don't miss out!

http://www.eventbrite.com/e/openstack-ops-mid-cycle-meetup-tickets-17703258924

So, I've taken our suggestions and attempted to wrangle them into something
that would fit in the space we have over 2 days.

As a reminder, we have two different kind of sessions - General Sessions, which
are discussions for the operator community aimed to produce actions (eg best
practices, feedback on badness), andWorking groupsfocus on specific topics
aiming to make concrete progress on tasks in that area.

As always, some stuff has been munged and mangled in an attempt to fit it in.
For example, we'd expect to talk about Kolla more generally in the context of
"Using Containers for Deployment", because there are some other ways to do that
too. Similarly, we'd expect the "ops project" discussion to be rolled into the
session on the user committee.

Anyway, take a look at the below and reply with your comments! Is anything
missing? Something look like a terrible idea? Want to completely change the
room layout? There's still a little bit of flexibility at this stage.

Given that the conference will be at a hotel, experience tells me that
we'll be lucky if there is enough bandwidth for all participants. OTOH,
Tom has surprised us before, so who can really tell :)

On another note: is anybody interested in sharing a ride from San
Francisco? One less car on the road, the environment(alists) will thank

An excellent idea!

Last time in San Antonio, an etherpad worked reasonably well for car
pool, so here's one:

+1 please

just record it and upload it somewhere would be useful, I'm not sure if
it will work for ambient talk but I think is worth to try

Thank you for your suggestions.

The easiest way to shoot this down is "because logistics", but there's
actually a bit more to it than that.

This event is explicitly not recorded or broadcast, in addition to
careful attention paid to the attendee list, to ensure we create a safe
and welcoming environment so people who aren't typically "outward"
facing or have permission to publicly talk about the details of internal
systems can share.

If you can't make the event and want to share something, you may add it
on the etherpad beforehand. We can even arrange an advocate on-site to
raise your issue, concern or best practice if desired.

On the other hand, if your aim is to consume the output of the event,
the etherpad summaries are likely to be much more useful to you than
watching 16 hours of unstructured discussion.

For those who cannot participate as actively as they would like due to
the event not being in their area, I am still interested in
investigating a geographical rotation.

Thanks,
Ju Lim

Re: [Openstack-operators] Draft Agenda for PAO Ops Meetup (August 18, 19)

+1, we already do finish a little early on the second day to facilitate
these folks. The other thing that may not be immediately clear is that
the agenda is also specifically designed so that people who don't care
as much can skip the feedback session/summit planning/breakout reports
at the end of day 2.

As someone who spends about 30-40 hours on various planes and airports
to get to and from this event, I struggle to find significant amounts of
sympathy for those who feel it necessary to leave three quarters of the
way through to get home "at a reasonable time" ;)

When all is said and done, if our content is compelling, people will
stay. So, making our event so damn good that people don't want to leave
even after it's finished should probably be our aim :D

Having said this, I don't think it was JJ's intention to do anything
other than recognise the tools and mon session as important and make
sure it received the most attention possible. That's valid.

Unfortunately, moving it to the previous day would basically just be
moving the problem around - we're balancing the time slot used against
conflicts in other time slots. Large Deployment Team for example is
another very popular session, which has a lot of participant overlap
between Monitoring and Tools, so it's probably not a good idea to run
those against each other. Which means we're basically at a swap - should
Tools be on Day 1, or should LDT be on day 1?

There's some thoughts on scheduling at:
https://wiki.openstack.org/wiki/Operations/Meetups#Scheduling , which
conclude with "Use best judgement, and get wide feedback.", and it's
issues like this which are exactly why we have this email, so ... what
do you think we should do? :)

Tom

2015-08-04 Thread Tom Fifield

Hi all,

I've received feedback that maybe there won't be enough HPC folks in
Palo Alto to run a 90 minute working session on it :)

I would propose to slot in instead one of these three, which are
currently not well included on the agenda:

1) apps.openstack.org - What the Ops Community would like from it,
should we look from the Application side, ie Applications that can run
on your cloud, or Augment your cloud, Products that can help enhance
your cloud.

2) Openstack Personas (validation) - The UX team will have a set of
roles that we would like to validate with the opertator community.

3) Task Taxonomy - The UX team is creating an inventory of
"standardized" tasks that can be used to create scenarios and create a
common vernacular within the community.

Any thoughts?

Regards,

Tom

2015-08-05 Thread Geoff Arnold
I’d like to see some time spent on specific issues associated with public cloud
operations. (This is not the same as Large Deployments.) As Stefano pointed
out yesterday:

http://maffulli.net/2015/08/04/a-new-push-for-openstack-public-clouds/

this is an area which probably needs more attention.

Cheers,

Thanks Geoff.

Which session would you propose to replace?

As Stefano pointed out yesterday:

this is an area which probably needs more attention.

Hi all,

I've received feedback that maybe there won't be enough HPC folks in
Palo Alto to run a 90 minute working session on it :)

I would propose to slot in instead one of these three, which are
currently not well included on the agenda:

1)apps.openstack.org -What the Ops
Community would like from it, should we look from the Application
side, ie Applications that can run on your cloud, or Augment your
cloud, Products that can help enhance your cloud.

So, I've taken our suggestions and attempted to wrangle them into
something that would fit in the space we have over 2 days.

As a reminder, we have two different kind of sessions - General
Sessions, whichare discussions for the operator community aimed to
produce actions (eg best practices, feedback on badness),
and**Working groups**focus on specific topicsaiming to make concrete
progress on tasks in that area.

As always, some stuff has been munged and mangled in an attempt to
fit it in. For example, we'd expect to talk about Kolla more
generally in the context of "Using Containers for Deployment",
because there are some other ways to do that too. Similarly, we'd
expect the "ops project" discussion to be rolled into the session on
the user committee.

Anyway, take a look at the below and reply with your comments! Is
anything missing? Something look like a terrible idea? Want to
completely change the room layout? There's still a little bit of

Re: [Openstack-operators] Draft Agenda for PAO Ops Meetup (August 18, 19)

2015-08-06 Thread Geoff Arnold
Well, I’d prefer not to put Public Clouds into the existing HPC slot, because
I’m involved in the Product WG discussion that’s scheduled at the same time.

Could we put Public Clouds in the Tuesday breakout mix, and Large Deployments
in the Wednesday breakout (replacing the HPC WG).

Geoff

PS Will you be there, Monty? Any preferences?
