No. There are a lot of other situations:
- you better not put your notebook in your bag while HDD is spinning madly
- to be environmentally friendly, I turn off elecricity complettly in my
computer room, when I'm not working there -> I have to stay there until
all computers are shut down, and then pull the plug.

Both happen more then once a day.

[opensuse] Problems with smart and channel update

2006-01-02 Thread Kyek, Andreas, VF-DE
Hi,

I use two SuSE 10.0 machines with identical repository config
on both machines (means: same channels, same servers but
different proxies). One is located here in the company and
the other one at home.

The machine here often does not (seems not to do!) read the channel
lists from the server AND doesn't give an error message for that.

e.g. this morning: (sorry for the long lines)

a) good machine prints after a "smart update"

b) second machine prints:

Both machines had a "smart update" yesterday morning at the
same time, so they should have found the same new packages.

So why can this machine not resolve the channels lists from
the server? When I start an "apt update" on the same machine, it
reads all repository metadata fine and has no problem in finding
new packages.(Identical repository config for apt and smart)

Another idea: Is there the possibility to do something like a
debug during a "smart update"? I have to use the companies proxy
here and maybe smart cannot work with this proxy?

Any Ideas? (This behavior makes me use apt on my machines because
I can not trust smart; but smart shall be the apt replacement in
10.1 AFAIK.)

confused

They are replaced by smart - which you could also use for doing the
upgrade ;-)

[opensuse] Preload delays shutting down

2006-01-02 Thread Alistair Hamilton
Hi

I am puzzled as to what is going on with preload during a system shutdown.

A lot of time passes with messages announcing that preload is "laying out"
various applications. This is irritating. Waiting a long time for a
computer to shut down is more frustrating than waiting for it to start up.

I am curious to know what is going on during this phase. I would especially
like to know if there is any way to bypass this step in the shutdown process
without breaking preloading entirely?

There might be good reasons for why the system repair is only reachable this
way.

However, feel free to report this as a usability bug:

Well, 10.1 is in a late alpha stage (1st beta to come mid of january). I
guess there is a lot of work waiting for the community until 10.1 is
ready for public use and the information you would like to get are

you might update/upgrade your 10.0 with the packages of
