Yes. makeSUSEdvd does not work with RC3.

[opensuse] RC2_RC3 update: package validation failed.

2006-04-30 Thread Carlos E. R.
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

I had installed 10.1 RC2 from scratch. Then yesterday I updated to RC3,
using the DVD made from the five CDs. At the start of the package
installation (dvd phase), I got this message in a pop up message box:

   (X) Validation Check Failed

   File content
is signed with the following GnuPG key, but the integrity check failed:

   ID: A84EDAE89C800ACA
   Fingerprint: 79C1 79B2 E1C8 20C1 890F 9994 A84E DAE8 9C80 0ACA
Name: SuSE package Signing Key <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

This means that the file has been changed by accident or by an attacker
since the repository creator signed it. Using it is a big risk
for the integrity ans security of your system.

   Use it anyway?

I clicked "yes", but I don't know which exact rpm is the wrong one.

Looking now at the yast logs (which I saved), I find messages related to
the incident:

the messages repeats several times. In fact, I got the the pop message box
at least twice during the phase running from the CD, and 3 or 4 times more
later when it booted and continued the install from the HD.

At the online update phase of the install, I got another error; this one I
could not copy to a png file, beacue print screen key did not work on this
phase, so I had to copy by hand:

  Dependency conflict
patch zypp-1285-0.noarch [20060429-201531] can not be installed due to a
missing...
(out of screen, couldn't see the rest)
there are no providers of zmd==7.0.1.0-12 for patch zypp

I selected "ignore" and it continued; but next time I looked back it was
asking the same thing, with two identical conflicts. I ignored again. This
time I watched the screen and I noticed that it said that yast has been
updated and needed to be restarted, so it did and looped back to the
online update, this time with a conflict of three identical packages! So
this time I canceled and continued the install.

I keep full logs of the incidents.

Is the yp-tools package installed? (odd that answering_machine would need it)

[opensuse] Error with Yast2 module answering machine

2006-04-30 Thread Thomas Ohms
Hi there!

New to this list let me say "Hello" to everybody and bring forward my problem.

To figure out if it is a bug or my fault here is what I have recognized:

When starting the module answering_machine of Yast2 in console, I get the
following error twice a time:

Can't exec "ypcat": Datei oder Verzeichnis nicht gefunden (<--means "file or
directory could not be found) at
/usr/lib/YaST2/servers_non_y2/ag_nis line 83, line 1 (#1)
(W exec) A system(), exec(), or piped open call could not execute the
named program for the indicated reason. Typical reasons include: the
permissions were wrong on the file, the file wasn't found in
$ENV{PATH}, the executable in question was compiled for another
architecture, or the #! line in a script points to an interpreter that
can't be run for similar reasons. (Or maybe your system doesn't support
#! at all.)

I am using SuSE 10.0.
So is there something I have done wrong or is it bug I could report?

[opensuse] want to run an acucobol aplication in SuSE 10.0

2006-04-30 Thread Aryan Ariel Rodriguez Chalas
Hi everyone

I want to know if there exists an iBCS for SuSE 10.0
and
where to find it. I'm trying to run an aplication
compiled using acucobol in SuSE 10.0.

I had used acucobol without any difficulty from SuSE
7.3 until SuSE 9.0 and I want to move my aplication
to SuSE 10.0.

Thanks in advance...!

[opensuse] problems with ncurses in SuSE 10.0

2006-04-30 Thread Aryan Ariel Rodriguez Chalas
Hi everyone:

I'm having problems with ncurses and the encoding of
SuSE 10.0. When I compile any program using ncurses it
mess up all the screen and I can't see the right
characters are supposed to be shown when I run the
program as it used to be in SuSE 9.0. I tried
"export LANG=us_US" and some other possible solutions
to this issue but none of them worked out.

Please, if some body can help me, I'll be endlessly
glad of it.

Ooh, I just thought of one. Actually, I didn't so much think of it now

A GTK+ frontend to YaST would be very cool.

does a 5 years old atri rage mobility m3 count?

basically the laptop version of a rage128, 8megs ram, 3d support
(within the limits of what that chip can do) is working flawlessly.

Re: [opensuse] Giving up on Nvidia fx5500 - what other pci vid card has good drivers?

2006-04-30 Thread Clayton

And my experience has been just the opposite Clayton. The NVidia cards
have been a nightmare for me

This is cannot understand... no really I can't, at least not in the
last... say... 1 or 2 years since SUSE has been providing the
nVidia driver in YOU. Setting up an nVdida card for basic use (ie
single monitor with 3GL enabled) has been a no brainer on install. I
have done it dozens of times on dozens of machines.

In contrast, ATI has been a total nightmare. We used to use ATI where
I work - a 100% Linux company. Not one of the developers was able to
get the ATI card to set up correctly. We are not talking a bunch of
Linux newbies here... this is a team of highly skilled developers that
know their Linux inside and out. One lucky guy in the team got an
nVidia card by mistake (IT dept ordered it instead of ATI for some
reason). He fired up his new computer and installed Linux... and was
up and running within a hour from a bare machine. Meanwhile the rest
of us poor sods with ATI were still figting the broken ATI installer,
wading our way though crap documentation from ATI.. swearing a lot.
We finally did get the ATI machines working, but only barely, and they

are so fragile it is ridiculous. Every time you make the slightest
change to the system.. bam, you're down to run level 3 until you
figure out why the video has broken.

Everyone finally got so fed up with the ATI cards they were all tossed
in the trash and nVidias were installed. 2 minutes after boot, all
systems were up and running with full 3GL and no video problems at all
anymore.

I honestly have yet to see (personally) a single case of an ATI card
actually working correctly in Linux (and this is over 8 years of full
time Linux use and support).

doubt there has been a single nVidia card user or very few that hasn't
had to get help on the suse-e list.

This may be true from 3 years or more ago, but now...?? It's a rare
person with problems with nVidia.

Late Proposal

I propose SUSE Firewall 3.

The purpose of this module would be to allow an advanced user to move
onto a more advanced firewall system with out having to resort to iptables
directly.

This module will work with the SUSE FW2 definitions, But offer an additional
GUI to define advanced (to professional) firewall configuration settings.

My proposal is that to incorporate www.FWBuilder.org to do this.
FWBuilder has one of the best gui's for building firewall available.
It is often compared to SyncPoint (Mega $ closed source system,
defacto standard).

Additionally, FWBuilder has a momentum, (ie. a large group of Firewall
/ security experts who are constantly improving and checking the "Rule
generators").

I've mentioned this in the FWBuilder developer lists, (as a prove of concept).

They seam to approve of the Idea, and immediately started thinking about
changes to FWBuilder that would make it work better for the project.

Here the jist of our discusions:

Proposal build a interface between YAST fw definitions and FWBuilder:

nVidia GeForce FX5700LE - no problems, automatically recognised, automatically

SiS laptop chipset circa 2000 - no problems, automatically recognised,

ATi Mobility X700 - automatically recognised, doesn't set-up to a usable
configuration, must download and install ATi drivers before any graphics
environment can be used, need to manually re-install display driver after
Kernel updates, no 3D support, a total PITA... Thinking of throwing away a
perfectly good laptop and replacing it with either a nVidia based laptop or a
MacBook Pro...

It's a big mess. It's not the apt way of doing with all components in 1 place,
like e.g:
rpm ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/suse/apt/ SuSE/10.1-i386 packman usr-local-bin

When will there be a centralized package repository for suse (including 3rd
party
contributred packages). The repository should provide a list of all packages
and files
in the repository (including on the not subscribed channels/components).
