[opensuse] Problems with NFS and Amarok on laptop.

2007-08-19 Thread Robert Smits
I collect old time radio programs and store the main collection on a 320GB
sata drive on my desktop computer. I export the sound directories with nfs,
so that I can connect to my sound files either from my laptop or my wife's
desktop.

The desktops, as well as the laptop are running opensuse 10.2. All the
computers are behind a Linksys router, so all the SuSE firewalls are turned
off.

The laptop needs to connect to nfs directories both at work and at home, as
well as changing wireless connection settings, so the settings are switched
with scmp and the wireless card settings are made with ifup, not Network
Manager (because Network Manager can't deal with changing nfs connections).

The symptom I notice is that frequently amarok will go into a state where it
appears to be trying to access the database of files and won't play the next
track, won't allow you to select any functions, etc, until it's done its
thing. While this is occurring I also cannot see my network connections in
Konqueror - just the little symbol that it's trying to load them is spinning.

Even after wiping the database in amarok and telling it not to look at network
connections for my sound files, this behaviour continues.

I'm trying to figure out if this is an amarok problem or an nfs problem, or a
little of both.

I know amarok has issues with sqlite for larger databases but I haven't been
able to get it to switch to mysql.

But I suspect the real problem is my nfs connections are being dropped and not
re-connected again.

Some one like to point me through the minefield?

Thanks, Bob

[opensuse] Can't access CDDB Data - sometimes...

2007-08-19 Thread Don Raboud
Hi all,

I am trying to rip audio CD's to flac using konqueror's audiocd:/ feature.
When doing so, there is no CDDB information shown, just Track01, Track02, etc.
This used to work in 9.3 or 10.1 (I forget which I used to do this before) but
now I only have 10.2 running here.

On one of my computers Amarok CAN access the CDDB information, so it seems to
be available (Amarok is currently set to access freedb.freedb.org using port
8880). On the other Amarok can't access the information, but I that is a
problem to be solved later).

Does anyone here know how to get konqueror to access this CDDB information?
Alternatively, is there a better/alternate way to do this ripping which will
incorporate the CDDB information.

Thanks.

Novell was not "awarded" the rights to UNIX. The court affirmed by

Hi David,

if you don't force update despite complaint from package manager than it is
usually OK. This assumes that package manager has no bugs.

I use external repositories, but one package at the time, and I look at
dependencies that will be updated. That way if something is broken it is
easier to fix.

I update one package at the time.
That way you have some control who is culprit if something turns bad.
In the Factory it is bad idea to use:
  zypper up

In this particular situtation you want to use rpm or Smart to install newer
libzypp and zypper.

BTW, updated Smart using Smart, and it works.

Factory seems to be source of eternal fun.

Thanks Benjamin,

Sorry if I wasn't clear, but koffice* is what is complaining for a newer
release of 'arts' :-)

I retrieved these packages:

koffice-1.6.3-23.1.i586.rpm
koffice-database-1.6.3-23.1.i586.rpm
koffice-database-mysql-1.6.3-23.1.i586.rpm
koffice-extra-1.6.3-23.1.i586.rpm
koffice-illustration-1.6.3-23.1.i586.rpm
koffice-planning-1.6.3-23.1.i586.rpm
koffice-presentation-1.6.3-23.1.i586.rpm
koffice-ruby-1.6.3-23.1.i586.rpm
koffice-spreadsheet-1.6.3-23.1.i586.rpm
koffice-wordprocessing-1.6.3-23.1.i586.rpm

From this repository:

http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/Backports/openSUSE_10.2/i586/

rpm complained, so I downloaded 'kdelibs3-arts-3.5.7-69.1.i586.rpm' and tried
again.

rpm complained a second time, so I downloaded 'wv2-0.2.3-29.i586.rpm' and
tried again.

rpm is now complaining about 'arts'. The version installed is 1.5.5-22 and it
wants >= 1.5.7

Hence, my original question regarding the status/location of an
appropriate 'arts' package for 32 bit x 86 openSUSE 10.2

Thanks for the response, though.

Carl

Yes, both 64bit on the z61p and 32bit on the Sony.

And compiling ipw3945 doesn't work either.

So i've installed a vanilla 2.6.22.3 with ipw3945 and everything is
fine.

Only a tip to openSUSE community, don't put iwl3945 into standard, it
doesn't work. Better an old driver with users apce daemon then a broken

[opensuse] Is it wise to do update all from 10.2 from Packman, Guru, Xorg7.2 etc?

2007-08-19 Thread d_garbage

Hello OpenSuse community,

I recently came across a discussion in the archives about the problems of
too generally updating a distro from non-official sources. In the past I
wasn't aware of this and did regular "update all" in Smart with Packman,
Guru, and Xorg7.2 repos enabled. In a long time the only breakage I
*appeared* to suffer was with bluetooth which took me a while to puzzle
out the cause of and downgrade to the standard version. I have since
re-installed and so far stuck only to official updates, with the exception
on adding the X11:/XGL repo to use Compiz Fusion.
My question as a linux novice (and also one who gets a kick out of
updating! A hangover perhaps, from MS days) is; if i go back to updating
extensively from the 3rd party repos, how much harm vs improvement might i
be doing?
I would like to add that I realise this might be a difficult question to
answer, and also perhaps a controversial one - so please - don't end up
having too heated a debate about it.

Thanks,
David.

Recent versions of openSUSE don't have all the manuals you can find on

[opensuse] Network problems.

2007-08-19 Thread Kevin Papineau
I seem to be having a small issue that I've never had before.

When I was using SuSE 9.2, I ran my internal network using my server as the
gateway to the internet without any issues whatsoever. Behind it, there are
2 or 3 systems and 1 or 2 laptops, depending on company and my own tinkering
with spare systems lying around.

When I went wireless on the laptop, I installed a router and moved the
internet to that, using it as the gateway. I am having issues with the
router, and so decided to move the internet connection back to the server and
replace the router with my hub.

In the time between, I switched the 9.2 to openSuSE 10.2. Now, while I can
get the server to work properly, and the other computers can ping the server,
I can't get outside access for any of the other computers. I have turned off
the firewall completely to test that, and no luck. IP Forwarding is turned
on.

Any ideas/suggestions/fixes?

Thanks.

Re: [opensuse] Software updates

2007-08-19 Thread Ben Kevan

Yes, you can update openoffice using a repo like you listed, however you
cannot choose exactly what version you want. The current version is 2.2.1 and
not 2.0.4.7, but as the repo says, it is stable.

For Thunderbird you can use the "Mozilla" repo.

http://repos.opensuse.org/mozilla/openSUSE_10.2/

That has package MozillaThunderbird which I believe is at 2.0.0.6 or so ..

For your updates do you use ZMD or did you remove the default update client
and are using opensuse Updater?

[opensuse] Antivir keys opensuse 10.2

2007-08-19 Thread Administrator
Hi,

can anyone tell me how to get a new key (licence) for antivir on openSuSE
10.2? I've looked through the web site www.free-av.com and can't find
anywhere where I can request or get a new free key for AV Classic for Linux
or even a paid-for key for AV Premium for Linux.

Can someone send me a current URL for the right page, please?

Thanks
David

[opensuse] Evolution 2GB file size limit in OpenSuSE 10.2

I'm nearly fully converted from Exchange to Evolution, when
consolidating folders... Evolution pops up a file size limit error.

It's not an ext3 problem, as I have larger files... it seems Evolution specific.

Any ideas?

[opensuse] arts 1.5.7*

2007-08-19 Thread Carl Hartung
Hi Everybody,

I decided to take kexi for a spin after seeing it mentioned in another post
here. Now I seem to be running around in circles looking for an 'arts' >=
1.5.7 suitable for 32 bit x86 openSUSE 10.2

Is this presently in the backporting pipeline, or are my software searching
skills getting rusty?

TIA & regards,

Thanks for the help Rajko, it seemed YaST made subdirectories left and right
with in /var/adm/mount, after checking I saw that there was 999 different
subdirectories. Now that I removed all of them YaST is accepting URLs again.
Which means that fixed my zypper problem. Again thank you for all your help.

The 301676 was filed, just a few hours earlier, and if you looked for YaST
bugs, like I did, than zypper one would not show up.

You can select some lesser important package and look messages, as in your bug
it is clear that YaST was deleting packages first.

[opensuse] .kde/share/config/mediamanagerrc and mounting DVD

To not touch all possible and impossible combinations for volume_label,
for example:

mountpoint=/media/DVD
uid=true
utf8=true

[/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/volume_label___1]
mountpoint=/media/DVD
uid=true
utf8=true

[/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/volume_label]

How to write, that for any volume_label the point of mounting would be

[opensuse] Software updates

2007-08-19 Thread Hylton Conacher (ZR1HPC)
Hi all,

I am looking to update OOo.org and perhaps Thunderbird, although I have
just got the Reply-to-list working on Thunderbird 1.5.

I have the version of OOo 2.0.4.7 and Thunderbird 1.5 that shipped with
the 10.2 DVD.

Would adding the following source to my update sources(Configured
software catalogues) enable me to have the opensuse updater retrieve the
necessary information and inform me that there is an update selected to
be installed next time I agree to install software updates.

Link to add as HTTP source:
http://repos.opensuse.org/OpenOffice.org:/STABLE/10.2/

Would the Opensuse updater be able to go from OOo.org version 2.0.4
build 2.0.4.7 to the most recent stable version for OpenSUSE?

If I decide to update Thunderbird, could I use a link similar to the one
above?

If I should do a Thunderbird update and certain features ie
Reply-to-list stop working, can I just select an earlier version in
Yast:Software after I have searched for Thunderbird?

This is probably all in a manual somewhere but I do not have a link to it.

I have had a look at opensuse102_kdeuser.pdf and
opensuse102_reference.pdf and still my knowledge is deficient.

TIA for links and help

Anyway, I don't think it is libzypper itself, as there
was definitely 1 time where I saw it delete libzypper
itself and the whole thing segfaulted. So could be in
Zypper in Yast2. Alternatively, there was one update
