[opensuse] Adding/subtracting physical volumes in LVM

2007-09-27 Thread Bob Williams
ATM my /home mounts a volume group which holds partitions located on two
different physical drives, one IDE and one SATA. If I wanted to swap the IDE
drive for a new SATA drive, what would happen to the data held in /home?

For example, if I remove the IDE volume from the group, will all the data be
consolidated onto the remaining SATA volume, during the process of removing
that volume?

Hello, Bob ;)

I've subscribed to [EMAIL PROTECTED] and reposted my problem
there, in the hope of attracting the attention of the right people. It's
possible that it's a known bug.

Could I suggest you do the same?

I'm off to bed now. I'll look in again tomorrow.

[opensuse] 10.3 RC1 doesn't see SATA drive in mixed IDE/SATA environment

2007-09-25 Thread Bob Williams
I have two hard drives, one IDE and one SATA. My 10.2 installation
has /, /boot, /usr mounted on the SATA drive, while /home is a LVM2 volume
spanning both hard drives.

When I tried installing 10.3 RC1, it only detected the IDE drive. In the
Partitioner module, choosing expert - import settings from previous fstab
failed to find an existing fstab.

The boot up process appears to load both IDE and SATA drivers, so I presume
there is a problem with the SATA (sata_sis) driver. Is this likely to be
fixed by 10.3 GM or will I have to stay with 10.2?

[opensuse] Buffalo wireless notebook adapter drivers

2007-09-14 Thread Bob Williams
I've just been helping a friend install openSUSE 10.2 on her laptop. All went
well until we tried to configure the wireless adapter, which grumbled about
needing linux drivers. Unfortunately, there are only Windows drivers on the
vendor's website.

The device is a Buffalo AirStation 125* High Speed Notebook Adapter
WLI-CB-G54S

Has anybody had any experience with setting this up under linux?

Sharing is what it's all about. I've just downloaded beta 3 overnight, and I
noticed that most of the peers I was leeching from were at less than 100%
download. In other words, we were all in the process of downloading/uploading
to each other. Of the peers who had 100% of the download, only two were
seeding me, suggesting that the remainder had switched off their upload
capability as soon as they had got the whole file. My upload is still
running, and will continue to do so until I have given back to the community
the 4GB I got. Currently uploading to clients in Spain, Japan, UK and Turkey.

Hopefully, that will improve everyone's experience.

Thanks James. I suppose I could wait for things to change, but it's my server!
I'm downloading my mail from Demon (my ISP) with Axigen, with the idea of
redistributing to the users here. Still new and experimental, for me. I'll
take a look at Axigen to see if it's not allowing deletion.

Bad form to reply to your own posts, but I need to report back that all is
well. Somewhere along the line, compiz got upgraded from 0.2 to 0.5 (seemed
like a good idea at the time), but it was incompatible with all the other
bits and pieces. Downgrading has restored my window title bars, etc.

So, that's lifted my spirits enough to try Compiz-Fusion (see Tom Parker's
post lower down this thread). But maybe not yet, daughter's getting married
on Saturday and I *still* haven't written that speech :(

[opensuse] Stuck with Beryl

2007-07-17 Thread Bob Williams
In an experimental mood, I installed Beryl according to the instructions at
http://en.opensuse.org/Beryl

It went OK, except that all my windows lost their title bars. Having fiddled
around a bit with the display settings, I decided to back out. So I reverted
to the KDE window manager, uninstalled all the beryl packages using YaST,
that is

beryl-core
beryl-manager
beryl-plugins
beryl-settings
emerald
emerald-themes
aquamarine

leaving compiz and xgl.

Unfortunately, nothing's changed :( My desktops are still on the faces of a
rotating cube, my windows have no title bars, and my theme has reverted to
KDE-standard. This behaviour survives logging out/in and even rebooting. I've
even deleted ~/.beryl

Any suggestions, please?

ATM I am running openSUSE 10.2 x86_64, but I notice that some programs,

Will I be able to install and run these apps?

If not, how do I force the openSUSE installation to allow me to install a

Thank you very much [I mean it :)]. And the gentle rebuke is received in the

The mailing list adds its own signature to every post. Could it be the mailing
list software which strips out the space. For example, this reply stripped
out the mailing list 'unsubscribe' instructions, but they'll be back at the
bottom of this message by the time you read it. And I'll bet Patrick used
, but it's only by the time I get to reply to
his message (see above).

[opensuse] Video editing with Cinelerra & Kino

2007-05-12 Thread Bob Williams
I am using Kino to capture my miniDV movies, and would like to use Cinelerra
for the editing, but it runs pig slow even though I've recently upgraded my
graphics card to nvidia 7600 and got direct rendering working. Having read
Rob Fisher's excellent guides I understand that
cinelerra needs it's movie clips to be in *.mov format.

Kino can capture in raw DV or *.avi. Does anyone know of a utility for
encapsulating *.dv files into *.mov format. The utility mentioned by Rob
Fisher doesn't work here. Maybe because it's 32-bit? and I'm running a 64-bit
system?

Thank you and good morning. A combination of your magic incantations and
reinstalling the nvidia drivers via Yast did the trick.

BTW, Patrick, if you make your signature separator dash dash space as opposed
to just dash dash, then intelligent mail programs will automagically strip
your signature out of replies.

[opensuse] More display problems

2007-05-11 Thread Bob Williams
Having been unsuccessful with my ATI Radeon card, I treated myself to an
nVidia 7600 graphics card. I've added the download.nvidia repository and
installed the drivers, but running glxgears gives the following

:~> glxgears
Xlib: extension "XFree86-DRI" missing on display ":0.0".
1074 frames in 5.0 seconds = 214.689 FPS
1221 frames in 5.0 seconds = 244.026 FPS
1221 frames in 5.0 seconds = 244.039 FPS
1221 frames in 5.0 seconds = 244.031 FPS
1221 frames in 5.0 seconds = 244.034 FPS

I'm sure it should do better than that, and I'm not sure what to do about that
missing extension :(

Any suggestions, please?

BTW, should I remove the ATI drivers, if so, how?

That page seems to open all the time, here ;)

I've now got to the point where I can start mythtv frontend, and I presume it
is connecting to the hardware and the backend. However, when I select 'Watch
TV' I get this message:

"MythTV is already using all available inputs for the channel you selected. If
you want to watch an in-progress recording, select one from the playback
menu. If you want to watch live TV, cancel one of the in-progress recordings
from the delete menu."

But there are no recordings taking place :(

Thanks. I've installed mercurial and downloaded/installed the v4l-dvb drivers.
Kdetv now sees the WinTV-HVR 900 and can tune in to 6 free-to-air channels,
but without sound :(

However, mythtv cannot connect to the backend server, asks whether the server
is running or is the IP address wrong. It is looking for mythconverg, user
mythtv, password mythtv.

The IP address is localhost, but 127.0.0.1 doesn't work either.

Using knoda, I can connect to the mythconverg database and view its tables, so
I'm not sure why mythtv fails.

After getting this far, I don't want to give up now :)

[opensuse] More Mythtv problems

2007-04-20 Thread Bob Williams
I'm trying to set up a Hauppage WinTV-HVR 900 USB stick to use with Mythtv.

I'm following the instructions on http://lunapark6.com/?p=2682, but I'm stuck
on the fourth line below

cd /lib/firmware

wget http://konstantin.filtschew.de/v4l-firmware/firmware_v4.tgz

tar xvzf firmware_v4.tgz

hg clone http://linuxtv.org/hg/~mrechberger/v4l-dvb-kernel-history

cd v4l-dvb-kernel-history

make

make install

reboot

bash objects to the command hg, but I need to download the file which contains
the firmware drivers for the stick.

Another problem is the lack of a /dev/video0 file. Will that appear when the
drivers get installed?

I'm trying to set up a Creative USB Webcam Live! I've installed Camelot 0.3.5
but when I open it I get an error message saying

Initializing Video4Linux input failed: Cannot open device /dev/video0: No such
file or directory

which is indeed true. Problem, how can I get the software and hardware to see
each other?

Thanks, Johhny. That seems to have worked.

Take a look at

K Menu
Control Centre
KDE Components
Session Manager
On login...Restore previous session

Oops. Thanks Stephen. Actually, my own contributions there are very early and
faltering, but I shall mend the loading of external links, as they are better
value.

It's not too late to ask your MP to support this Early Day Motion (Private

I'm not using sendmail. I post directly to my ISP's SMTP server as I have an
always on connection through my router.

Interesting thought, but I don't understand. I'm only using kmail AFAIK.

Thanks for your interest, J

[opensuse] Where's my local mail?

2007-01-17 Thread Bob Williams
I'm using Kontact/Kmail to collect mail from two external ISPs, no problem. I
have also setup an account to collect mail from /var/spool/mail/bob but
nothing arrives in my inbox.

OTOH, following activity in a terminal window, I sometimes get the message

'You have new mail in /var/spool/mail/bob'

That directory contains an empty file called bob, and a locked file called
root. Presumably the latter is there because at installation I opted to
direct root's mail to this user? Shouldn't I be able to read it, in that
case?

What's going on (or not)?
