So its true? no 7.2 support for old drivers and no 9000 support for new
  ones.

I got my radeon 9000 to work with the one click method in oS 10.3. The
driver version posted at that time was 8.41.7. This worked fine for me,
but I didn#039;t test TV out. It did run 3d nicely. I see a newer driver
version posted at http://en.opensuse.org/ati. These drivers are supposed
  to with with xorg 7.2

  Good luck,

  Jim F

Thats strange, when navigating the AMD/ATI site I get to driver version
8.28 for Radeon 9000 on xorg 7.1 (max).
  I guess 10.3 is using xorg 7.2?
How can this be? does the openSUSE build service stock proprietary ATI
drivers? or what does the one-click actually do?

I went thru the same thought process, but the newer versions of the
drivers do support xorg 7.2 in opensuse 10.3. The one click method
installs the same driver as ATI, they are closed source binaries after
all, it just makes for an easier install. It simply runs a routine where
it adds the ATI source to yast and install it for you with yast. Give it
a try, it worked on my radeon 9000. Make a backup copy of
/etc/X11/xorg.conf first if you want to play it safe so you can easily
restore it in case you encounter any problems.

Can somebody tell me why if opensuse repo ATI driver is the same as ATI driver
from their www site

ATI web site show that drivers are from 9500

and

openuse ATI repo show that the drivers are from 8xxx or 9000

Well, the first impressions are pleasing. It is quicker in installation,
package selection verification is fast now, no errors with any packages
installed (I install everything except Laptop). My /home is usually
another physical hard drive, which I then mount after the installation
of the new system. Everything, all programs I used in 10.2 and were open
under the last 10.2 session just popped up as it was before I closed it
down. All program setups like Evolution was there as before when the
new /home was mapped in fstab. Evolution used to be a pain with updates,
but now it is faster and more responsive. Great!!

This has been the fastest upgrade I have ever had. The online Update has
now got Community Repositories. It is similar to convienientSUSE

NON-OSS, DVD media playing and codecs.

So far, an alert and snappy system. Well done OpenSUSE clan!!

  YOU have been WARNED!

Have you ever encountered such a problem? This is another urban myth.

I use Perl extensively, install all my modules from CPAN and have never
seen this problem. The actual problems I do hear of mainly come from
broken Perl packages shipped by some other distributions (not Suse :)

Sure, on a production server, it's good practice to be very sure of
versions, but in that environment the installation mechanism will follow
whatever house policy is used for configuration management.

Perl has an installation layout, which Suse and other distros follow,
that is designed to prevent conflicts between modules installed from
CPAN and modules installed via the distros' own mechanisms. YaST updates
do not affect modules installed from CPAN and vice versa.

Applications installed via YaST that use Perl modules can and should be
configured in their packages such that they will not see Perl modules
installed from CPAN if that would cause them a problem.

Also, Perl programs run a large fraction of the web's infrastructure.
The maintainers of important Perl modules take great care not to break
backwards compatibility in the same way as for the C libraries etc.

 Cheers, Dave

Not clear whether this is when burning or when reading, and which
applications you are having a problem with.

If it is a data CD try manually unmounting before ejecting.

It this fails this most likely means the device is still in use by the
application or a process of the application that you last accessed the
CD/DVD with. Close the application if possible. If the application has
crashed it is possible that the process accessing the device is still
running in the background. Use ps to find the process and kill it.
Cannot really give info on what to look for without further details.

and the version of lm sensors found on SuSE 9.3 were not up to the
task. I periodically throw various Live CDs into the machine
to see if any of them can manage it, but so far no luck.

[opensuse] opensuse and problem of poland users

2007-05-05 Thread Fazer
Hello everyone

The firs I want to say sorry about my english.

I'm an administrator of one of polish sites about suse and opensuse:

susek.info

about 3 years of my work I have a clear view about problem of polish users.

Everything what I can do now is to describe those problems and maybe this will
prepare next relases of opensuse to be more problemless than now

1 problem

ADSL

in poland as in all east contries we have an national monopol of
telecomunication witch is for about 70% of peoples one way to have an
Internet access the adsl acces by atm using thompson sagem and zxdsl

in 32 bit
two first are easy to use (get firmware and configure) but only if you have
most popular wersion but the last is useless

in 64
nothing is working:
in my small investigation (I'm don't have 64 bit computer) there aren't
modulest to atm and ppp in default kernel

the rest problems are usual and there is no needs to describe it now

I'm interested in support ppp atm etc in 10.3 in 32 and 64 version
