If you also want to do some developer testing:
You can also install 11.0 Alpha0 but then you need to do a factory
update or the foctory install of KDE4 as mentioned on the link above. As
KDE4 of alpha doesn't work yet.

Re: [opensuse] Bye all

2007-11-04 Thread Joop Boonen
Hello Aniruddha,

I don't know if ever been at the fosdem in Belgium:
http://www.fosdem.org/ . There have been quite a few discussions how to
handle the buildservice tree. I think it would be very good if you'd
come to the fosdem, as i assume de openSuSE people will also been
there. The people at openSuSE are very open to improvements. I'd say
come to the fosdem. You'll also be able to meet up with gentoo people as
they are also there at least last year.

By the way i think it's impossible to give security guaranties for tries
that are maintained by maintainers who are doing it in their space time.
Also because some packages might be maintained by one person. If the
person is not able to build the fixed package, for what ever reason,
after a fixed security bug you end up with a potentially dangerous
package. I cant imagine this doesn't apply for gentoo.

By the way I'm very happy with and thankful for the people who use the
spare time building and maintaining packages and doing other work for
openSuSE.

Regards,

Joop.

I think the reason why the say it's not free. Is because they think de
boxed version is also openSuSE. Even tough it's called "SUSE® Linux 10.1".
I don't think it's openSuSE. It's based on openSuSE with additional
packages like:
Also included in SUSE Linux 10.1 are proprietary software packages such as
Adobe* Reader, RealPlayer*, Macromedia* Flash Player and Java*, plus a
variety of features that simplify Windows-to-Linux migration. Users can
replace their existing operating system with Linux or install Linux
alongside it to experience Linux in a “trial” setting, without affecting
their existing software installations.

[opensuse] Upstart (Ubuntu)

All,

I've read that Ubuntu is going to use Upstart ( http://upstart.ubuntu.com/ ).

I'm wondering how openSuSE is thinking about Upstart? If openSuSE and/or
other distributions are staying with sysv init or moving to upstart? (Some
in the sysv camp and others in upstart camp). Will it break the LSB?

I've already dsent a correction. 7.0 was pre 2.4. I think 7.0 would
have been 2.4 and 9.0 would have been 2.6. But the finale release didn't
match the planned date. So this would have persponed the release.

Re: [opensuse] SUSE version naming

2006-04-16 Thread Joop Boonen
I think it's the numbering is very logical. Only for 10.x it was a bit out
of tune.

X.0 is the pre new kernel version.
8.0 was pre 2.4 kernel (2.4 was test kernel) 8.1 was 2.4 kernel
9.0 was pre 2.6 kernel (2.6 was test kernel) 9.1 was 2.6 kernel

My opion 10.0 was pre red carpet and other novell tools 10.1 has al this
inside. An ofcourse the market made them move to 10. Solaris 10, Mandriva
10, Redhat 10 etc.

I personally prefer numbers as the dat or some wierd name doesn't mean
anything to me. x.1 id newer than x.0. That is very clear. Look the latest
version up on the internet.

I hope SuSE will never move to NT, 2000, XP, Vista etc. Instead of 4.0,
4.1, 5 and 5.1?

(May be an option might be an odd and even sceam like with the kernel, odd
is test/unstable even is stable?)

Regards,

Joop.
