[opensuse] VMWare Workstation 5.5.1 on OpenSUSE 10.3 (Solved)

2007-10-23 Thread Masim "Vavai"; Sugianto
Hi,

Just to make a clarification due to this thread
(http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse/2007-10/msg00882.html) and this
one (http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse/2007-10/msg00873.html).
Subject is about "Installing VMWare WS ver 5.5.1 into OpenSUSE 10.3".
Installation process finished without problem but launched
"/usr/bin/vmware" produced an error :

vmware: xcb_xlib.c:52: xcb_xlib_unlock: Assertion `c->xlib.lock' failed.

Note : VMWare WS ver 5.5.1 worked very well under OpenSUSE 10.2.

Run the following command : "export LIBXCB_ALLOW_SLOPPY_LOCK=true" as
mentioned in OpenSUSE WIKI (http://en.opensuse.org/Xlib.lock) didn't
successfull.

For those who have same problem, solution should be an easy way :

1. Upgrade your VMWare into ver 5.5.5. VMWare 5.5.1 serial valid for 5.5.5
2. Download vmware-any-any-update from
http://knihovny.cvut.cz/ftp/pub/vmware/. I take
vmware-any-any-update114.tar.gz
3. Installing your VMWare ver 5.5.5
4. Run your vmware-any-any-update (extract and invoke ./runme.pl)

I've wrote a complete steps in my blog,
http://www.vavai.net/index.php?/archives/18-Installing-VMWare-Ver-5.5-.X-on-OpenSUSE-10.3.html

Sorry for this link. I'm not a splogger ;-).

Rui Santos has notified this solution in these thread before but
another replies said that it can't be applied to OpenSUSE 10.3.

I tried with vmware-any-any-update114.tar.gz as I mentioned at
http://www.vavai.net/index.php?/archives/18-Installing-VMWare-Ver-5.5-.X-on-OpenSUSE-10.3.html#extended
and the installation finished without problem.

Here is what I wrote at the article :

1. Used VMWare version 5.5.5. This version used same license with
version 5.5.1. If you have prior version, download VMWare ver 5.5.5
from VMWare.

2. Download vmware-any-any-update114.tar.gz or another latest update
to update your kernel module.

3. Install the following packages. The Software Management tool in
YaST makes this easy to do.
- binutils
- gcc
- gcc-c++
- kernel-source
- make (this is probably already installed)

4. Preparing the kernel update, run the following command :
# cd /usr/src/linux
# make mrproper
# make cloneconfig
# make modules_prepare

5. Go to your vmware-any-any-update114.tar.gz download directory

6. Extract the file
# tar -zxvf vmware-any-any-update114.tar.gz

7. Switch to the directory in which you extracted vmware-any-any-update
# cd vmware-any-any-update114

8. Run ./runme.pl and follow the prompts. After applying the patch,
the runme.pl script will call the VMware configuration script
/usr/bin/vmware-config.pl. Follow these prompts as well.

9. Finally, the configuration process finished with greeting message :

The configuration of VMware Workstation 5.5.5 build-56455 for Linux for this
running kernel completed successfully.

You can now run VMware Workstation by invoking the following command:
"/usr/bin/vmware".

Enjoy,

--the VMware team
10. Run your VMWare by invoking the following command :
"/usr/bin/vmware" from Konsole.

# /usr/bin/vmware

VMWare response with this warning :
/usr/lib/vmware/bin/vmware:
/usr/lib/vmware/lib/libpng12.so.0/libpng12.so.0: no version
information available (required by /usr/lib/libcairo.so.2)
But the rest is OK and VMWare launched and started successfully.

[opensuse] Blogger Party, Microsoft & OpenSUSE Mission

2007-11-01 Thread Masim "Vavai"; Sugianto
Well, this is not about technical stuff. Just an intermezzo ;-).

Last week (October 27, 2007), the Indonesian Blogger created their
event called PestaBlogger 2007 (Blogger Party,
http://pestablogger.com). This is the first and biggest national
blogger events in Indonesia.

After short discussion with my friend of mine in Indonesian OpenSUSE
Community (http://www.opensuse.or.id), we get a plans to take this
event as an opportunity to promote OpenSUSE by providing CDs and
brochure.

I contacted one company based on Bandung, Indonesia (Paris van Java
:-) ) and got their support by providing 1000 CDs OpenSUSE with
pre-printed Geeko logo.

What's the interesting point is the party list of sponsors.
PestaBlogger chairman told me that one of the main sponsors is
Microsoft Indonesia. He said that the committee would not be accepted
our request to attached the CD as one of the audience gifts but he
provided another way, distributed CD without officially attached.

We (me and some OpenSUSE-ID member) tried plan B. We brings the CDs
onto the party. I met some bloggers (about 500 bloggers around of
Indonesia) and the mission getting started, distributed the CD with
one or two introduction words. The mission completed successfully with
a good response. We got another advantages because Microsoft provided
only about 10 DVD of Windows Vista and Office 2007 compares to 1000 CD
of OpenSUSE 10.3 :-).

Maybe in the next blogger party, OpenSUSE-ID and Indonesian Linux
Community receive the equal opportunity to get listed as main sponsors
:-).

Next event is Bandung Comtech and Indonesia Linux Conference in the
end of November 2007. Indonesian OpenSUSE Community officially invited
by the committee and we hope we get better idea to promote this nice
distro.

I posted this story at my personal blog :
http://www.vavai.net/index.php?/archives/22-PestaBlogger-2007-Blogger-Party,-OpenSUSE-and-Celebrity-Violin-Player.html

Note : Indonesian OpenSUSE Community launched at July 23, 2007.

I don't know which thread you noticed to :-) but could you please tell
us about your printer model ? Mine is Canon IPixma 1880 and I can used
cnijfilter and cnijfilter-common rpm driver
(http://www.canon-asia.com/index.jsp?fuseaction=support&prod_type=bj&country=SG).

Sometimes in another case, I didn't found the exactly model but I can
used another relevant models.

[opensuse] How to Build DVD Images of OpenSUSE Repositories

2007-12-09 Thread Masim "Vavai"; Sugianto
Hi forums,

Is there any chance to build up a DVD images of OpenSUSE repositories
just like what have done with Ubuntu
(http://www.howtoforge.com/dvd_images_of_ubuntu_repositories).

I have successfully used rsync to make a local repositories of
OpenSUSE oss, non oss and Packman Repositories but I need to make this
as DVD image to better distribution around of Indonesia.

The main problem in our country is about poor internet connection so
the brilliant improvement like one-click-install or online update only
touch some of the OpenSUSE fans. We could avoid this problem by
providing OpenSUSE repositories. We also take another approach by
tried to make a remastered distro based on OpenSUSE 10.3 with common
application used in Indonesia, or by providing add-on cd that contains
a typical codecs and application but it is another project of our
community.

In OpenSUSE 10.2, we could built up OpenSUSE 10.2 repositories by
manually split the contents into 6 DVD. In 10.3, it seems to more
difficult to split the file to fit on 4 GB capacity on each DVD (we
can take 8 GB capacity of DVD but it still didn't solve the main
problem).

Any suggestion really appreciated.

I got same experience about this 1 month ago, after 10.3 installation.
After trying some tips and tricks, there is 2 option to solved this
problem:

1. chmod 777 to the VMware images (folder and it's content)
2. Change the author or make the group author to get full access to
the VMware images

Try to logout and re-login to make sure the VMWare setting has been
changed and get the latest update. I don't now why but the trick
worked for me :-).

Hi Adam,

Before installing VMWare, you must rebuild vmmon module and this
proses need kernel-source to be installed. Please refer to
http://www.vavai.net/index.php?/archives/18-Installing-VMWare-Ver-5.5-.X-on-OpenSUSE-10.3.html
for complete process.

I used VMWare v5.5 but it should be OK with the newer version.

[opensuse] Collecting a Complete Set of Software and It's Dependencies

2007-12-13 Thread Masim "Vavai"; Sugianto
Hi,

I don't know it's easy to become true or not :-)

I have a local copy of openSUSE repositories (oss, non oss and
Packman). I want to collect a complete set of software and it's
dependencies from the repos so I can redistribute in a small amount of
size.

Here is an example : If I choose w32-codecsall, it should be display
what library should be included, just like a process in Software
Management in YAST, but I need more of this. I want that all of
dependencies copied automatically into specified folder.

Is this possible to use YAST capability to do this or is there another
solution to solve my problem ?

I know, I can used Kiwi to make a remastered openSUSE based distro but
if this possible, it would be great.

Another idea is creating one-click-install script with local repos but
this idea still needed what dependencies software must be included.

If you confused with the suggested installation, try to install
without update any-any patch. Skip this process. If the installation
worked without problem, then it means you do not need any-any-patch
:-).

The problem in your installation is about kernel-source that must be
installed with gcc, make, binutils and gcc-c++. This component
required to build vmmon module.

As I suggested in earlier email, you can follow the instruction here :
http://www.vavai.net/index.php?/archives/18-Installing-VMWare-Ver-5.5-.X-on-OpenSUSE-10.3.html
and skip the process about any-any-patch.
