Hi,

not sure about the intel platform, especially a new one. If it were myself, I
would steer clear for a while, just personal preference. . BUT, the main
reason why I wrote was to tell you I have had great luck with both acer and
toshiba laptops using 9.3 through 10.3. Everything works fine out of the box
except when you have an atheros wireless chipset. This is easily fixed by
downloading the madwifi package.

Thanks but i have turion based laptop. FSA1655g
Turion a good processor but not with ati chipset. I have a lot of
problems with it.
To me intel has great linux support from wireless to GPU.
Thats why i choose new santa-rosa platform

If you have any type of computer store with display models available, I would
suggest popping in a live cd to test it out before committing yourself. I
mess around at circuit city all the time, if they want your hard earned $$,
they wont mind.

Good luck.

The url refers to a Dell computer. The readers should be aware that the
Attorney General of the State of New York is suing Dell for breach of contract
in not standing by its warranty agreements to repair machines that fail, after
something like 700 complaints were referred to his office. I'm sure that this

Well good, that way I'm assured of not having future problems.
Of course I would have to wait till one of the 30 of 40 Dells I
maintain for my company an my customers actually has a
problem. which, to date (knock on wood) has not happened.

100% of the Sonys my company purchased had to go back
within the first month, and it took weeks to get them to accept
the fact that it was their MOBO that was the problem.

The deal is that every manufacturer has problems from time
to time, and every one of them is in court somewhere.

worth the wait.

Re: [opensuse] Help me to buy a new laptop

2007-06-04 Thread Michael Kershaw

To me, there's only one player in teh laptop market...IBM Thinkpad's
hands down. If not just for their linux compatibility, for their
design and durability. Until any other laptop vendor out there has
titanium hinges from teh base to the lcd, and can flatten out
completely, I personally would look no other way. ESPECIALLY if you
have kids whom may be around while it's on your lap. I've had my
daughter come in front of me and pull down on my screen, and i had no
concern whatsoever. If it was a dell, hp, mac, or any other vendor
really for that matter, it would have snapped. Also, if your ever in
your car or anything like that while ur lappy is on, I can sit a
thinkpad on my steering wheel, and position my screen upright. Yet
again, any other model's screen would most likely be positioned chest
level.

Like I said, it may just be personal preference, but just teh screen
alone sells me on them. I've had a T40, and on a T42 now for a couple
of years running Gentoo only. Never booted to anything but on either
one actually. Been drooling over the Z61T for some time also. Of
course like you mentioned, the X series are incredible as well, but i
like the idea of the cd/dvd rom being in the chasis over the docking
station. Something about a little 12inch screen with a weight of only
3lbs is quite appealing though! =D

Good Luck with your hunt!

Sheesh yourself.

If one does not communicate effectively, it's hardly suprising that a

And clearly you have not checked often, since debate is frequent and
