What are you executing? I see no message like that when running "antivir".

OK, you're trying to start a GUI program. Are you in an X session? If
so, I can only gather than the X session is owned by someone other than
root (as it should be). So, how did you become root?

The 2 step method:

1. su -
2. start GUI program

always works for me...

Ok, but the X is running for the user:

Fatal server error:

What to do then ?

You are not following the instructions. He said "start GUI program", he
didn't say anything about "startx"; which will not work, you are
attempting to start a second GUI session from inside one.

You are supposed to run "antivir-gui" - the GUI program you wante to run
at first.

add root to the antivir group.

look in /etc/group

or just use vigr[vigr gives you and exclusive vi on /etc/group
similarly, vipw does the same for /etc/password]

which is kind of absurd, root doesn't need to be in any group. I think the

How did you become root? If you use "su -" from a working X session,
then an X program will work for root, as we mentioned before.

As for the group warning, you could silence that by typing (as root)
"usermod -A antivir root"

Best thing to get rid of this, is update your java to 1.6, and then
update alternatives as root, as there is also the bug that the updating

If you want to knowhow to do this, look at bug:
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=348430

I now have updated to java 1.6. I tested if it was ok, by entering a

It succeded, but not the antivir-gui:

As i thought, it tries to connect to a server...
Best thing to get rid of this, is update your java to 1.6, and then
update alternatives as root, as there is also the bug that the updating
is set to manual.
If you want to knowhow to do this, look at bug:
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=348430

This is a java-1.5 error, but usualy has something to do with external
server-connections. Does the vs try to reach the update server?

Are you sure you checked if the new 1.6 was set as default?
Did you use this page to verify your version?

So it actually runs, but you are curious about the error?

ISTR something about an environment variable SLOPPY_LOCK or similar,
which some have reported success with.

It sounds like this antivir is basically a curiosity - OTOH if your
system is a server to windows clients, then there is a need for AV- but
clamscan is better suited to scripted checks, and samba has hooks into
clamav for real time "on access" scanning, so that's probably your best
bet anyway.

Yes Joe it runs.

No it's not a server. It's a workstation.

Maybe I shall migrate to clamav.

Are you realy sure you want that? Just clamav?
Test showed that antivir was one of the better (not THE best) scanners.

I've been doing also some tests, and clamav only detected 60% of a virus
population, while antivir got over 95%...

Still not 100%, but for that you seed several filters cascaded...

I would not worry about the error message, as long as the app runs...
with the 1.5 version, you got the message,*and* no connecting, or
working app...
(might even the message is still there when i run mercury, the messenger
that could not connect to the server, i would have to look, when i start
from shell, but after it worked, i called the app from Alt+F2..)

And why would you change to a lesser app, just because of an error
message anyway?
