[opensuse] SUSE 10 KDE Problem

2005-12-05 Thread Dimitris Kalamaras
Dear all,

I have SuSE 10.0 for a month or so and everything went smoothly until a couple
of minutes ago when I started downloading, through YaST, kdeedu3-3.5.0 (and
kdelibs3-3.5.0 which are needed). The install is at 61% right now but the odd
thing is that Konqueror no longer works (Mozilla does) in my account, but if I
issue su -c 'konqueror' everything is ok. To be more precise, when i run
konqueror, a window pop ups saying
Sorry
Could not find mime type
application/octet-stream

I press OK and then another message occurs about mime-types not installed
and when I type a URL it says:
Malformed URL

I noticed that Konqueror now reports (About Konqueror)
Konqueror 3.4.2 (Using KDE 3.5.0 Level a SUSE 10.0.42)

This is the console output when running konqueror as normal user:

Any clues? Is it the KDE Libs 3.5 install?

Thanks, and sorry if this is not a technical area.

I guess yes. By installing kdelibs3-3.5.0, you did a partial KDE upgrade
and now have mixed up your version numbers. I see the following
possibilities:
- upgrade all KDE packages to 3.5 or
- downgrade kdelibs again (install from CD/DVD)

Why it still works as root? I guess there are some old config files in
your user account which need to be converted or so. If root did not
have ~/.kde before, this problem won't happen.
You could also move ~/.kde away (in user's home directory).

Oh, Installing a new KDE version when running KDE isn't a good idea. It
can work, but it can also cause trouble ;-)

BTW: This list is mainly for discussing the SUSE development version.
For questions about released versions, please ask on

Habe ich mir auch schon überlegt! Aber die Vorstellung war dann doch
etwas komisch: Ja, Schatz! Ich komme gleich ins Bett! Muss nur noch
kurz meinen Router (unterm Tisch) anrufen, damit er runterfährt!

The simplest thing to do after upgrading to all the KDE 3.5 or any group
of KDE files is to restart KDE.

ctrl-alt-F1
login as root
type: init 3
type: init 5

Now things will work as they should again.

my recommendation: for SUSE Linux 10 use KDE 3.4.2, that shipped with it,
otherwise be ready for problems.

I think thats misleading.

Of course *if* you follow the guidlines and install all the *necessary*
packages for 3.5 to function correctly then you'll have very few, if
any, problems. There is no reason to expect problems...

I for one am loving the performance boost with KDE 3.5, expecially Konq
which is now seems so much more responsive and a bit faster for file
operations.
