What I was observing was that there does seem to be something odd in the
way that Firefox was interacting with the KDE sound support. (Other
applications seem to have no unusual issues).

I use the SuSE version. I have a general set of rules about installation
of software on SuSE...

1) Check if distro RPM exists, if exists use that...
2) Check if 3rd party SuSE RPM exists, if exists use that... most work
but some do not...
3) If it uses a bin or script (Netbeans, funambol), repository based
(CPAN, eclipse, firefox, thunderbird plugins), apply with caution...
These are usually safe enough but one may get the odd surprise..
4) Build from source (with checkinstall)
5) If nothing works throw toys out of pram :-)

I would not consider using a 3rd party generic RPM ... too likely to
break stuff... and you normally do not have the level control of control
on where it should go that is available in 3 and 4 ... i.e. you can
isolate it from the main configuration...

In this case the machine is known for hardware issues with most
distros.. the sound support is erratic, the wireless card has given me
truly interesting times between SuSE versions, and the power management
is somewhat unreliable.., so this really is a localised problem.

BTW It was not originally purchased to run Linux on anyway...

You mentioned that Realplayer was the problem in your case .. which for
some reason surprises me little..

Curiously, I have the position that if I launch Firefox under KDE in
10.2 it segment faults when the sound system is enabled. Under all other
windows managers it is fine.

My laptop does have a sound hardware which has known issues with Linux
anyway so I have never explored this in any depth, (and it did give me
the incentive to explore other windows managers and as a consequence
found something which suits my usage better than KDE :-) ).

Have you tried with any other window manager?

Apparently, the problem lay with Realplayer. It wasn't set up when I
installed 10.3 and KDE. I tried hearing an MP3 file and found I had to
call up Realplayer. All works now, including the sound from blogs.

If you've been running this distribution long enough to have the "SuSE" habit
(vs. "openSUSE") ;-) you *must* have learned a thing or two by now about how
to properly frame questions and get them answered on this list. Details...
details... give us details (and make them relevant, please!)

Don't make me go to Google to figure out if your Dell is 32-bit or 64-bit.

Don't make me ask if you've installed the supplementary multimedia packages
from packman.

Do give at least /some/ description of any research and troubleshooting you've
already done to resolve this. You *have* done some research already, haven't
you? :-)

There's no way to know, yet, Dennis. The first thing to troubleshoot is
why "Firefox began acting up and finally refused to appear at all."

Solving problems in Linux is like peeling back onion skins in that the way to
proceed is tackle and resolve the obvious problems, first, then see where
that leads you.

Like I wrote previously, my approach now would be to return the system
to 'stock' software. Get that working and see if the sound problem clears up.
If not, oh well, on to the next step!

Hi Dennis,

If you're having problems with an openSUSE installation, the last thing you
want to do is throw software into the mix that hasn't been specifically
packaged for installation in the distribution. Doing so just complicates
matters and defeats the rationale for running an 'rpm' based system...
unless, of course, you're seasoned and knowledgable enough to install it in
such a way that it doesn't affect or conflict with other packages.

In my experience, if you stick with the 'stock' and subsequently released
openSUSE update packages, including those from alternate packagers
like 'guru' and 'packman', you are much less likely to experience problems
with mainstream software like Firefox.

Also, by taking this more conservative approach, in the event you *do*
experience problems, the chances are greater that others here who are
similarly affected can work with or advise you on how to proceed.

My recommendation would be to uninstall the generic Firefox, reinstall the
openSUSE package and then try to work through the original problem with
others here on the list.

regards,

Carl

[opensuse] Sound problem......fixed.

2006-12-13 Thread Fred A. Miller
As someone else said, adding users by their logon ID to the "audio" group is a
work around, which is great for now, but there needs to be a proper fix ASAP.

Over all, I'm very impressed (so far) with 10.2. On this laptop, I'm using
the "old" KDE menus..MUCH, MUCH better than the new ones with a "pad."
WRONG!!!

Now that there is a sound work around, I guess I can get on with the business
of conversion from 10.1, and have some clients order from Novell - once they
have product to ship, that is.

Just search bugzilla for ac97 (search in comments) - there are
several bugreports around this, some of them contain workarounds also.

BTW: I "only" need modprobe snd-intel8x0 in boot.local ;-)

2006-01-07 Thread Patricio Bruna
Hi, i have e Packard Bell EasyNote Notebook (A8750) with opensuse 10 on
it.
Everythings works ok, but the sound.

lspci list it as "00:1e.2 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corporation
82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 04)"

Yast load the snd-intel8x0 kernel module fot it, but i get not sound.
Kmix works ok, i can listent how volume got changed, but amarok make no
sound.

The strange thing its when i unload the kernel module (snd-intel8x0).
Whe i do that i can get the bell system sound when i press TAB TAB in
konsole. But i have none /dev/dsp or /dev/snd/* so kmix dont work,
amarok neither, etc.

Any Ideas?

Maybe you simply have to adjust "loudness" above zero, using "Yast2",
"hardware", "sound card", but maybe you have to add some "modprobe xxx"
at the start target of /etc/init.d/alsasound, like

  case "$1" in

  modprobe snd_atiixp
