It was reported ages ago, by me, for instance.

Yes, it's on the YaSt team radar. The only way to fix this problem sooner is
to submit patches.

[opensuse] Yast2 grabbing window focus

2007-10-09 Thread Bill Merriam
I love the new 10.3. Thanks for developing it.

When I run Yast2 Software Management it opens windows to report it is
doing various things with repositories. It opens and then closes lots
of windows. Each time it opens a new window it takes the focus away
from the window I am working in and I have to click my window to get
back to work. Again and again. It seems to do this with both GTK and QT.

Could Yast open just one windows and display all its messages in that
window?
I think that was the behavior in 10.2.

Thanks.
Bill

It is ok under kwin (kde's window manager) because kwin's focus
stealing prevention copes well with it, however, if you're using
metacity (gnome) or compiz then it will indeed steal focus.

Actually 10.2 behaved in the same way. It would be certainly
preferable to use a single window. This is an annoyance everyone is
aware of.

Are you running KDE? The new window steals focus problem is largely in the
window manager. If you're running KDE, right click on any window title bar,
and select Configure Window behaviour, then go to Advanced, and raise the
Focus Stealing Prevention Level (not too high, because then all new windows
will open in the background :)

It's a fair feature request. You can open a bugzilla entry for it and suggest

Is that GNOME or KDE desktop.
I use KDE and just started YaST and it didn't grabbed focus from KMail for a
second.

For KDE:
Look in a Configure Desktop Desktop Window Behavior
Tab Advanced 'Focus stealing prevention level:'
Here is set to 'Low' and 'Hide utility windows for inactive applications' is
checked.

This is an annoyance everyone is aware of.

Scenario: typing in an IRC client and you are also installing updates.
The focus gets stolen but you are still typing and since some of the
windows also focus the abort button you inadvertently hit it because
the focus was stolen. Now you scream and get upset. Yes this has
happened to me and it took a while to figure out that you don't type
anything while the updates are installing and the focus keeps getting
stolen. Haha..

I kept thinking why couldn't it all be done in just one window with a
progress bar and a label telling me what's happening.

Simply start up yast in a different workspace, and work in another. It
should not bother you too much. At least, that's what I do in 10.2, at
least the main window doesn't grab the focus this way. The pops up go to
the active workspace, but not in focus.

Maybe 10.3 is different.

In that case... you could start a second simultaneous graphical session.
That one will surely not steal focus.
