[opensuse-factory] SIS 530/620 onboard video

2007-04-21 Thread Donn Washburn

Hey Group;

I am involved with a older system with a SIS 530/620 on board video
system. Yes, miserable! The problem is that any SuSE from a boxed set
10.1 to current 10.3.Aplha# fail during booting from CD #1 just about
the point at which /dev/udev is showing on the screen. It locks up the
whole unit. To rescue this system I have resorted to Fedora Core 6 and
it is working at this point. I tried with SuSE at the boot menu to
select VESA and TEXT modes plus failsafe. Nothing worked

It appears SuSE's udev is unable to setup a dev console/tty#.
The screen goes black and the keyboard is dead.

Anybody found a work around?

you need to apply this iso to the old iso
  like this

  applydeltaiso oldiso.iso deltaiso.iso newiso.iso then burn newiso in k3b

Be warned that applying dvd-deltas takes a lng time 2 hrs on my AMD64
3000+. And requires quite a lot of memory too. I once tried to run out of
memory and have the process quit after some 1½-2 hrs with 1 gig ram + 500
 megs swap.

Nowadays 1 GB RAM seems so small :-)
The applydeltaiso works fine here:
512 MB + 1.5 GB swap,
1.6 MHz Athlon XP 2000+,

It takes really long, but it runs in background unnoticed, unlike some other
processes, and I can use computer for not computing intensive tasks, like
email and browsing without glitches.

Sounds to me that I should just download the new alpha3 and upgrade
alpha2+..Oh well, when I get to it...:-)

But the problem is not the downloading of updated metadata, which usually

Uhhm, you're talking about downloading the updates/repodata/*.xml.gz
files? For the 10.2 updates that's about 13MB currently. I'd be very
interested to hear how you download that over a dialup at a realistic
3kbyte/s in a few seconds tops.
