Re: [openthinclient-user] Multiple "Profiles", One ThinClient

2011-09-08 Thread Corey Murtagh
Hi Elliot,

Like you I went for the OTC appliance at first. Unfortunately it doesn't
appear to be maintained, so the version of OTC installed in the appliance isn't
up to date. Harsh as it is after you've put in all the work, my first
suggestion would be to start fresh with a machine running either Windows or
your favourite Linux distro and install the latest version of the OTC server
software.

To address your actual issue though...

When a user logs into a Thin Client machine they will have all applications
(including application groups) assigned to the ThinClient entry, the User Group
they belong to and those assigned to their User entry. So if you have an
application group assigned to a ThinClient then every user that logs into that
machine will get those applications, plus their User Group applications and
their own Applications.

The problem is that if you use autologin you have to define the available
applications on the ThinClient. I've found only one thing that might work in
this situation, but I haven't tested it fully to see what side-effects it might
have.

THIS IS NOT TESTED. IT MIGHT (read: probably will) BREAK SOMETHING:

When you use autologin the system uses the implicit 'tcos' user account.
Interestingly, you can create a user named 'tcos' with no password and
configure it as you would any other user - applications and so on - and these
settings are applied to autologin. If you then log in as a different user,
those applications are no longer available (unless they are also set for the
other user of course).

I'm going to be playing with this some more to see what breaks, but it'd be
nice to get some feedback on this from the dev team. Specifically, what is
likely to go wrong if we create a user name 'tcos'? If it does break things,
perhaps an update to the 'autologin' device to allow us to specify a user would
be a viable option?

Subject: [openthinclient-user] Multiple "Profiles", One ThinClient

Hi, Everyone

I'm working on making my OTC installation more functional than it is now. It's
currently pretty jerry-rigged, and I'd love to make it better.

To start, here's where I'm at: I have the openthinclient-server that is
available for download as a virtual appliance. I needed something to get up and
running fast, so I went for that. The heart and soul of it is to point towards
a Windows Terminal Services server, right away. For almost all users, this is
all that they need.

There are a couple other groups of people ("Profiles"?) that will need
something else, though, and will have to operate on the same thinclients. I've
got a few different groups: OTCUsers, OTCAdmins, OTCCompass (for some testing),
OTCStudents, and OTCEvergreen (library catalog browser). I've created all the
applications that I need, put those into separate application groups based on
user group, and mapped them all to the correct user groups.

The issue I'm having is that when a user from any group logs in, it also throws
all the other applications at them, as well. Ideally, I want a user, who will
fit into one of the previously-mentioned groups, to log in and get only the
applications for that group. What's the best way to go about doing this? What
level should the permissions be set at: application, application group,
thinclient?

Thanks, everybody!

[openthinclient-user] Client SSH help needed

2011-09-08 Thread Gary Horneman
Hi,
I've been using Spiceworks (www.spiceworks.com) to monitor my network. It
uses SSH to query information about my thinclients. For OTC 0.4.5, I
apparently found the root password for SSH because spiceworks could query my
thinclients and report on them. Since moving to OTC 1.0, spiceworks can no
longer query the clients. I don't remember what password I used but it
doesn't matter since it no longer works.
Could someone provide a SSH login/password combination for the thinclient
that will allow spiceworks to query the clients. I believe it has to be a
login with administrative privileges.
Thanks,

Re: [openthinclient-user] Rdesktop issue

2011-09-08 Thread Stecher, Alexander
Hello Sbo,

try to use the FreeRDP-client.
You can find a recent version of FreeRDP in our unstable-repo.

Enable the following line in your sources.list:
deb http://archive.openthinclient.org/openthinclient/v1/manager-unstable
 ./

If you use NLA (network-level-authentication), please have a look here and
add a manual start parameter:

Good luck!
