2020-01-17 Thread Bin Hu via Lists.Opnfv.Org

Hello TSC and community,
Thank you for everyone's diligent work to make progress of OPNFV.
I am still monitoring the discussion on the mailing list. It draws my attention
that the consensus of TSC meeting somehow may not be completely legal. Let me
recap:
- I did NOT resign. So I am still a TSC Member and the TSC Chair.  * This is
current legitimate position, and does not violate OPNFV TSC Charter.- I
designated an Acting TSC Chair effective Jan 1, 2020, who has done a great job.
 * This is legitimate, and does not violate OPNFV TSC Charter.- I designated my
proxy in TSC effective Jan 1, 2020.  * This is legitimate, and does not violate
OPNFV TSC Charter or any documented and approved policy or procedure.  * There
has been NO precedent or requirement of approving a proxy designation.  * Thus
my proxy designation does NOT need anyone's approval according to prior
practice.  * Any new policy will not have retrospect effect.
Of course, it is certainly TSC's discretion to add new role of TSC Vice-Chair.
Helping hand in leadership is always great.
In conclusion:- I am still a TSC Member and the TSC Chair unless I explicitly
resign. I did NOT resign.- Any attempt or declaration of vacancy of TSC Chair
or TSC Member is illegal. Thus the planned election of TSC Chair or TSC Member
is illegal too because there is no vacancy.- My designation of Acting TSC Chair
is legitimate and already effective.- My designation of TSC Proxy is legitimate
and already effective.- Any new policy does not have retrospect effect.
I suggest that TSC focus on actual strategy, roadmap and how to best achieve
the goal of CNTT under the leadership of Acting TSC Chair, new TSC Vice-Chair
if any, and all TSC members/proxies. Any attempt of declaring vacancy or
related election not only is illegal but also deviates from TSC's job, and
wastes resources.
If anyone, including LFN Staff, disagrees to my points above, please provide
your legal counsel's official opinion, and explicitly refer to relevant
Charter, policy or procedure for any violation, and communicate via public
mailing list.
Thank you and keep up the great work.
Bin

The differences in your recollection and my reading of

Essentially *when* we would declare Bin's Seat Vacant is
one change, and adding the alternatives that we discussed and
discarded under each topic is another.

For the Seat on TSC, my write-up below seems to be missing the phrase
"after March 31, 2020", resulting in:

> Seat:

>  - Declare the Seat Vacant **after March 31, 2020 (if Bin has not returned,

Consensus that:

which is somewhat in-progress (reviewed briefly and commented during the
TSC meeting).

Also, a Consensus that TSC vote to authorize the TSC Chair election,
rather than continue with an Acting Chair:

> Role:
> - *Consensus to hold TSC vote to authorize* an Election for TSC Chair
>  - Agree on schedule for nominations and voting (Next step)

Finally, we preferred a new Vice Chair Role over a Co-chair role,
and to fill the new Vice Chair Role after the TSC Chair Election.

> New Role:
> - *Consensus to* Propose new Role *of Vice Chair, not Co-Chair*:
> - TSC Vote whether to Create New Role of TSC Vice Chair, then
> - Election for TSC Vice Chair *(again, TSC needs to agree on schedule)*

I hope everything we talked and agreed is clear(er) now.
Those who were not able to attend the extra discussion
Heather hosted at the Corinthia hotel should feel free
to ask questions. I suppose that one of the questions might
be *who was present*:

TSC: Parker, Georg, Qiao Fu, Sridhar, Mark, Al, Trevor
LF staff: Heather, Dave, Jim, Kenny

Re: [opnfv-tech-discuss] [announce][election] Opening nominations for OPNFV Technical Steering Committee (TSC)

2018-09-06 Thread Bin Hu
Dear Community,

I would like to nominate Bryan Sullivan from AT&T for the new TSC.

Bryan was a founding member of OPNFV, and served in the TSC since then. He was
part of the core team of OPNFV that led the community to achieve the success of
the releases and other important milestones. He contributed to numerous
projects at different stages of OPNFV, and is PTL of Copper, Models and VES
projects.
He also actively promoted OPNFV in many industry events and summits, and worked
with other upstream communities collaboratively.

Thank you for consideration

Subject: [opnfv-tech-discuss] [announce][election] Opening nominations for
OPNFV Technical Steering Committee (TSC)

Team,

Today, we begin nominations for a new TSC, consisting of 15 members, in
accordance with the Community Election
Procedures.
Individuals who are eligible to both vote and run for a TSC position are
those with 20 or more contributions on this list of active
contributors.
Before nominating someone, please consult the list and verify that the
individual has 20 or more contributions. You may find a schedule of election
activities
here.

PTL Input to the Active Contributor List
Note that the election procedures have a provision for adding and individual to
the active contributor list, who has less than 20 contributions, yet who has
make significant contributions to the OPNFV community. Per the election
procedure:

PTLs have an input on the "active contributor list" compiled over a 2-week
review period (with a view that this step primarily targets at making sure
qualified people that haven't been identified via the metric get added to the
list)
I am working with the TSC to define a specific process for this situation. In
the mean time, if you are a PTL, and you would like to add someone to the
active contributor list, please contact me directly with the name and a brief
statement about why they should be included on the list. Note that this action
simply adds them to the active contributor list, they still must be nominated,
separately. Also, note that the 2-week review period for the active
contributor list, cited in the election procedure, ends on Aug 31.

Nomination procedure

  1. You may nominate yourself, or someone else.

 * Remember that both you and the person nominated must be on the active
contributor
list
 with 20 or more contributions.
 * If you nominate someone else, I will confirm with that person that
they accept the nomination.

  1. Announce the nomination with a "reply all" to this email prior to 5 p.m.
(PT), Sept 7.
  2. Please include the following information:

 *   Name of the nominee
 *   The nominee's organization
 * A brief statement about the nominees qualifications and contributions
to the OPNFV community.

  1. Nominations close at 5 p.m. (PT) on Sept 7. See the entire election
schedule
here.
As nominees are accepted, I will post the nominee information on this
page.

Thank you for your participation in this important activity for the OPNFV
community. Please let me know if you have any questions.

[opnfv-tech-discuss] CNWG Introduction and Demo is Re-scheduled from 9/6 This Thursday to 9/13 Next Thursday

2018-09-04 Thread Bin Hu
Many thanks to Wenjing and Eddie for the flexibility.

All,

Upon Al’s request, Wenjing and Eddie have kindly agreed to re-schedule the
discussion of CNWG’s introduction and demo from this Thursday 9/6 to next
Thursday 9/13. The purpose of re-schedule is to allow for more participation as
suggested by Al.

I will cancel this week’s technical discussion on 9/6 (unless there is another
topic that community will propose to discuss).

I will send the invite of discussing CNWG update and demo for next Thursday
9/13.

Thank you everyone

Bin

Hi Bin and Wenjing,

The proposal to schedule this important session
(especially for testing projects) lands on a
truly bad week for VSPERF folks – 4 of us are
unavailable on the 6th, including our PTL Sridhar.

Is it possible to record the session?
or reschedule to the following week?

Also we have selected an Intern for our project
which begins with containerization, and she is more
likely to be able to joins the week of Sept 10.

thanks for considering this request,
Al

Because the US Labor Day holiday conflict, and we probably don’t want to wait
for another two weeks. I’d like to propose that we have the second meeting in
the Tech-Discuss time slot on Sept 6, and then rejoin the Clover meeting time
afterwards.

Bin,
Is the 9/6 tech-discuss meeting slot open? Thanks.

Eddie Arrage will do an overview and demos to illustrate how OPNFV projects,
esp. testing projects, can adopt and support cloud native, and benefit from it,
and what we can do in achieving the community goals, including adapting the
current CI to be much more agile. It will be demo driven and hands on.

Wenjing

Two weeks from now is US Labor Day holiday... I spoke too soon before studying
the calendar.

That raises a couple of questions:
- Do we want to change the pattern and switch to Aug 27? then going bi-weekly
from there?
- Do people still want to stick with Mondays, which tend to have more holidays?

Al,

Great suggestion. I am fine with it.

Wenjing,

Is it ok to re-schedule it to 9/13 so that at least 5 more people can
participate too?

Thanks

[opnfv-tech-discuss] Summary of Weekly Technical Community Discussion Thursday August 30, 2018

2018-08-30 Thread Bin Hu
Hello community,

Thank you all for attending the technical discussion today.

Today, Srinivasa Addepalli
presented a proposal of working on a new K8SOVN4NFV
Plugin
within OPNFV OVN4NFV project. The ultimate
goal is to upstream this new plugin to OVN either as a new, standalone plugin
or being integrated with existing OVN-Kubernetes plugin of OVN.

Based on discussion, all agreed that this new K8SOVN4NFV
Plugin
work will be one of the work item within the scope of
OVN4NFV project. Trinath
Somanchi will take the action to
update the documentation in wiki and other places, and put this new
deliverables in the release plan starting from Hunter Release. In addition,
Trinath Somanchi and Srinivasa
Addepalli will work with Infra WG,
Installer projects and helpdesk etc. for CI/CD details, scenario integration in
installers, new repo creation etc. when executing this work in a
business-as-usual way.

For more details, please refer to the meeting minutes page [1], which includes
attendees list and IRC log [2].

On September 6th Thursday next week, Eddie
Arrage will present an overview and
show a demo of the progress of
CNWG. Please join
the discussion.

Thanks

Bin

Sorry if you had difficulty in finding the CNWG meeting zoom.
The correct zoom meeting number is in the meeting invite.
https://zoom.us/j/5014627785.
And the meeting IRC is #opnfv-meeting.
The wiki page had an old number and wrong IRC, both are now corrected.

Stephen, can you send out a new meeting invite to update everyone's calendar,
but with CNWG caption?
Because few people were able to join this morning's call, we have cancelled the
meeting. Please check your calendar invite for next meeting in 2 weeks.

Thanks for a lot of people joining this morning’s call. I’m very encouraged
with the interest level. Thank you.

I’ve created a wiki as a home to keep track of meeting agendas and minutes, and
general logistics information. It’s here:
https://wiki.opnfv.org/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=26837622
(I need some help in making the URL fall under the working group menu and a
more memorable URL…)

The WG scope and work items are also listed there, as approved by the TSC.

The participants in today’s call opted to reuse the existing Clover project
call time slot on Monday morning 6AM for the WG calls. You can find the details
in the above wiki link. @Stephen you may want to double check for me to make
sure it is correct.

The calls will be bi-weekly for now… until we see a clearer need to change
anything.

I’m thinking about roughly classifying the topics of the WG in 3 areas:

-Landscape: where our projects are, how they fit into overall cloud
native landscape, where we may improve. We ask all related projects introduce
what problems you are solving and how the project may fit into the overall
landscape.

-Functional: deliverables in projects, tracking status and
dependencies: current activities include how-to specs, infrastructure, and CD
process/toolchain

-New capabilities: what new capabilities we need for nfv/our customer
use cases that we don’t yet see upstream and how we should help solve them…

The agenda of the coming weeks will therefore follow this pattern. If you have
ideas, please reply to this thread.

The next call is Aug 20. Since it’s a short time from today, I would ask
@Stephen if he can introduce Clover and how it fits the “landscape” assuming
he’s OK with that. If others are also ready to do so, or want to bring other
topics, please also let us know. We’d like to build up a backlog of topics to
cover.

We will use [cnwg] for emails. Thanks.

Regards
Wenjing

[opnfv-tech-discuss] Cancelled: Weekly Technical Discussion this Thursday August 23rd

2018-08-22 Thread Bin Hu
Hello community,

Our original agenda this Thursday (08/23) was to discuss how to streamline and
integrate different testing tools. However, there hasn't had much traction so
far, and the Test WG is still hashing out details if there is a need to look at
a common database, etc. So this topic is further deferred to future. I will
keep everyone updated once a date is determined to discuss this topic.

There is no other topic to discuss this Thursday. Thus the weekly technical
discussion is cancelled on this Thursday August 23rd.

There will be a potential topic on August 30th next week regarding how to make
OVN support multiple virtual interfaces and multi-homing, which are typical
requirements for data plane network containers. Once this topic is confirmed, I
will send the meeting invite.

Thank you

Bin

2018-08-21 Thread Bin Hu
Next Thursday is fine.

Based on discussion in release meeting today, Trinath will send a proposal to
the mailing list, along with a suggested date to discuss in the tech-discuss
meeting on Thursdays. We will go from there.

Thanks

I saw this email just now.

I am travelling to Akraino meeting and hence will not be available this
Thursday. How about next Thursday?

Thanks

This would be a good topic for the release
meeting
tomorrow. Are both of you available? Alternatively, we could discuss it in
the weekly technical discussion on Thursday.

Bin - would this fit your agenda this week if they're not available for the
release meeting?

Is OVN4NFV or container4NFV groups the right place to work on these? If you

to search whether there is any fork of OVN in OVN4NFV project. I did not see
any. Any suggestions?

Hi Wenjing,

I'd like to participate.
Currently, I would start with the cloud native CD process which is valuable to
the community especially to our future release.
Some of testing projects have already been investigating/working on the
possibilities/methods to include themselves as services in the cloud native CD
process.

In addition, I agree to a regular slot for meeting discussion is a great idea.

Best,
Gabriel

Thanks for all the interests... Please continue to let us know if you can
participate or someone in your project can. We clearly want representation from
container4nfv, installers that are producing k8s, edge cloud, data path,
testing projects that are interested in cloud native testing ... and all of you
really.

I'd propose that we use Bin's meeting slot for a kickoff community meeting as a
start and level setting, and choose how we want to meet in future. I'm taking
time off myself next week, but August 16 works for me.

Bin, would it be OK that we take the whole hour for August 16?
And does that time work for everyone?

Regards
Wenjing

Thanks for all the interests... Please continue to let us know if you can
participate or someone in your project can. We clearly want representation from
container4nfv, installers that are producing k8s, edge cloud, data path,
testing projects that are interested in cloud native testing ... and all of you
really.

I'd propose that we use Bin's meeting slot for a kickoff community meeting as a
start and level setting, and choose how we want to meet in future. I'm taking
time off myself next week, but August 16 works for me.

Bin, would it be OK that we take the whole hour for August 16?
And does that time work for everyone?

Regards
Wenjing

Let’s go for next week as we are planning to discuss it more tomorrow in the

I’d like to get more information about their thoughts.

Thanks!

Mark,

Great suggestion. I think it would be very valuable to discuss as part of the
broader technical community.

Do you want to present it tomorrow or next week? Either way is fine, and
whichever you are more comfortable with.

It might be too late notice, but we are starting to talk in the test working
group again about coming up with an overall guide/strategy on how to integrate
the different testing projects. An idea is to see if a guide or script could
be produced that would pull the different tools together and make it easier for
the end user to run them. The example I can give is to have Barometer
measuring systems under test while Yardstick is running a performance test.
Right now that would require a fair amount of reading and work on the part of
the end user to pull these two together. Add to that the test results DB
container (if the user does not want to publically publish their results) and I
see that has a fairly high barrier to entry.

Is this something we want to take beyond the test WG and discuss as part of the
broader technical community?

[opnfv-tech-discuss] Summary of Weekly Technical Community Discussion Thursday July 26, 2018

2018-07-26 Thread Bin Hu
Hello community,

Thank you all for attending the technical discussion today.

Today, Gang Wang introduced the
background of an existing project KVM4NFV,
and indicated the desire of gathering more requirement from community in order
to decide how to continue this project, and how to continue to invest on OPNFV.
There were several suggestions, for example, start a new proposal as if it were
a new project, and give the community the insight of real scenario that shows
the community the value and benefits.

Gang Wang will communicate with current
committers of the project, and collect the input from them regarding the way to
move forward. While the project KVM4NFV was
focusing on real-time use cases at the time the project started, Gang
Wang will also look into the scenario
that KVM may provide value to new industry evolution such as containers.

For more details, please refer to the meeting minutes page [1], which includes
attendees list and IRC log [2].

Feel free to propose discussion topics for future meetings.

Thanks

Bin

Hi Bin

I'd like to have a topic of KVM4NFV requirement gathering in this meeting,
I think we certainly continue this KVM hypervisor improvement for NFV,
but we might also looking for the opportunity to seamlessly integration with
other OPNFV project and new features for KVM4NFV.
So this topic might helpful for us to identify the valuable features,
performance bottlenecks and integration opportunity that we can contribute for
OPNFV KVM4NFV, Thanks.

Just to make it easier to find for Xu Wang, I am copying my message from last
week again here:

Regarding the Rocket project, I want to make sure that people are aware about
the work done on acceleration by the ETSI NFV community. The IFA working group
used to have a sub-group dedicated to acceleration.

This work could be useful input for this project. The first two documents deal
with exactly the same reference point that Rocket deals with.

[opnfv-tech-discuss] Summary of Weekly Technical Community Discussion Thursday July 19, 2018

2018-07-19 Thread Bin Hu
Hello community,

Thank you all for attending the technical discussion today. Especially many
thanks to Brian for helping run the meeting.

Today, Xu Wang continued the
introduction of a new project proposal
Rocket, which is about
hardware acceleration. He also presented the comparison of proposed
Rocket project with some
other similar projects such as DPACC. In the comparison table, DPACC project
was intended to cover both hardware acceleration and software acceleration, but
has been inactive since 2016. While
Rocket project is ready
to be established with community resource support, the question is how to
handle DPACC since it has been inactive for 2 years, e.g. terminate it? Or
restart but with Rocket
within it?

Xu Wang will communicate with DPACC
and find the best path.

Because no one from VSPERF project was present in the meeting, we didn’t
continue the discussion of Container Networking Benchmarking effort from VSPERF
project.

For more details, please refer to the meeting minutes page [1], which includes
attendees list and IRC log [2].

Feel free to propose discussion topics for future meetings.

Thanks

Bin
