RE: ORACLE 816 ON WIN2000

2001-04-21 Thread Mark Leith

I have installed 8.1.6, 8.1.6.2 8.1.6.3 all on the same Win2K box one
after the other - and have never had a problem with installation, automatic
database creation or the services not running as they should. Had a couple
of funky ora-600's whilst on 8.1.6.2 but upgrading to 8.1.6.3 (8.1.7) fixed
this. No other things jump out to mind that I have come across. There is a
patch available for the 8.1.6 version on metalink to fix the ora-600 problem

The installer hung at network configuration, but I think it's because we
launched the installer remotely through a Terminal Services window. The
database service does not come up automatically even though it says the
service is started. A patch is available for this, but I have not applied
it yet.

Idle time

2001-04-21 Thread Shreepad Vaidya

Hi List,

I have set idle time as 15 minutes by creating a profile and assigning
it to a user.

In OEM Oracle Top session the status is sniped.

My question is what is considered as idle time . ? No activity on the
machine or no statements running in the background or foreground for
that particular session.

The reason I am putting this question is in the OEM Top sessions
the command is select , instead of UNKNOWN .

I might have to reconsider my settings.

Hi Sam,

As part of my masters dissertation I have developed an SQL monitoring tool
using Java/JDBC/thin drivers that allows the DBA to see who is taking up
the
 resources currently in a database.
This is not at all a commercial venture, purely
academic. Plus if you want to learn about Java/JDBC this can be an
invaluable asset/starting point as you know the subject well and you can
see
how the tool has been built.

I'd love to see your Java Oracle DBA Open Source tool, up on a public
internet
site somewhere for download! :-)

Some other Java-Oracle type Open Source links you might want to look at, to
help further your own work, are:

Apache JServ = http://java.apache.org/jserv/index.html
DB Prism, Java/Oracle servlet engine =
http://www.plenix.com/dbprism/doc/Home.html
Tomcat (replacement for JServ) =
http://jakarta.apache.org/tomcat/index.html
jDBA, another Java Oracle DBA tool = http://www.jdba.org
ViennaSQL, Java/Oracle SQL tool = http://vienna.sourceforge.net

jDBA may the one you're most interested in, but using Java as the
programming
language for Open source projects, including Oracle ones, is growing rapidly
in
popularity! :-)

Hope this is of some use 8)

AndyD

Re: Datafile needs media recovery

2001-04-21 Thread Brijesh Lal

Hi
Since ur database in in archive log mode you can go
for following method also
just move your datafile to some other place. This is
just for backup. Now create a new datafile based on
existing datafile using following command

alter database create datafile'old_datafile_name+path'

as 'new_datafile_name+path'

where old_datafile_name+path will be the path and name
of ur orginal datafile which u have renamed and
new_datafile_name+path will be the name and path u
desire
Then perform media recovery for that new datafile
using
recover datafile 'new_datafile_name+path'
This method is basically used to recreate and recover
damaged datafile
However for this u must have all archive log files
since orginal datafile was created

Hope so this may help u

Hi Sam,

Unfortunately, I've been on the road and living out of suitcases, in hotels,
for the last 3 weeks, teaching Perl for Learning Tree. Also, our O'Reilly

write some articles to go with the launch, when it will be available to buy in
a week or two, once it gets from the printers to the retail warehouses!

Once life has settled down, I'll get onto your tool, and hopefully we'll be
able to run a section on it, once you've made it into a Java/Oracle world
leader, in our 2nd edition, IF we make it that far. I'm hoping the subscribers
to this list, will help make that possible! :-)
